He's also had five rushes between the tackles that went for more than 20 yards. In the losses, Martin has averaged 3.6 yards when running between the tackles and 1.6 yards before contact with only one rush that went for more than 20 yards. Buccaneers | Go with pass-first approach

Mon, 15 Oct 2012 12:36:20 -0700

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers took a different approach in their Week 6 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, going with a pass-first approach. "When they're throwing eight (defenders) in the box because they think their corners can cover, we have to make big plays so they can start taking people out the box and we can run the ball," WR Mike Williams said. "That's basically what they did yesterday. They put eight in the box and put pressure on their corners. Then, in the second half, they went back to back to the two-high (safeties) and the running game opened. We like that, too." RBs Doug Martin and LeGarrette Blount combined for 97 yards in the second half.

We've got a lot of the season left, and we'll just keep talking to the line, keep practicing and they'll come. … It's really just a matter of guys staying on blocks, me hitting the hole and all of us following the details," Martin said. Head coach Greg Schiano said he expects a better running game when the offensive linemen get more comfortable with each other.

Thu, 13 Sep 2012 09:31:01 -0700

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano said RB Doug Martin is in great physical condition to handle a heavy workload; however, the head coach is not sure Martin will have 28 touches every week, as he did in Week 1. "I do think it's a feel thing game to game," Schiano said. "But 28 touches … that's a lot of touches. Now, has it been done? Sure. Has it been done by rookies? So it's not unheard of. But we'll go one game at a time, and then you've just got to keep an eye on him as the season rolls on."

Buccaneers | Doug Martin has hold on starting RB job

Mon, 27 Aug 2012 06:03:05 -0700

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano indicated RB Doug Martin has overtaken RB LeGarrette Blount for the team's starting running back job. Martin moved into the starting lineup Friday, Aug. 24, and he won't be replaced any time soon. Schiano has been impressed with Martin's ability to play three downs. "That's why he moved in and started the game; because he has shown me that much," Schiano said. "And I don't think he did anything (Friday) night that would say, 'Oh, that wasn't a good move.' I thought he ran the ball well and did some things well. So right now, he's got to continue on that course. He's learning every day. And he's a very open-minded guy. He wants to learn."

Fantasy Tip: With Martin now expected to open the season as the starter, he should be regarded as a solid RB2 or flex option for owners.

Buccaneers | Doug Martin's competition falls to injury

Fri, 17 Aug 2012 20:27:32 -0700

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Doug Martin carried seven times for 23 yards in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 17, against the Tennessee Titans.

Fantasy Tip: LeGarrette Blount (knee) left Friday's game with a knee injury, and will have further tests. If Blount has a serious injury which forces him to miss any extended period, Martin would open as the team's starter. Both were already vying for the job in camp. Martin would be a solid RB2 or 'flex' fantasy option if he starts out as the top tailback in Tampa.

Buccaneers | Doug Martin looking good, but coach wants to see same in games

Sun, 29 Jul 2012 16:45:20 -0700

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Doug Martin, as an update to previous reports, is looking the part of a primary running back. Not only is he seeing the large majority of the first-team snaps, he is also staying on the field for third-down/pass-protection snaps. Pass-protection work is an area Martin's competition, LeGarrette Blount, has previously struggled. Martin, a rookie first-round draft choice, has shown a quick burst at the line of scrimmage, is hitting holes decisively and using his speed to make defenders miss once he hits the second layer of a defense.

Head coach Greg Schiano made it a point to say the players haven't played in a live game yet. "You look at them in protection and carrying the ball, but until they have to break a tackle, make someone miss in a game when they're getting tackled live, it's awfully hard to evaluate," Schiano said.

Stephen Holder, of the Tampa Bay Times, notes despite Martin looking the part, it does not mean that Blount is the No. 2 running back; nor does it mean that Blount won't have an important role in the Buccaneers offense this season.
