The New York Jets signed first-round draft pick DL Quinton Coples to a four-year, fully guaranteed deal worth $9 million Thursday, May 17. The contract includes an option for a fifth season. The team expects Coples to be an every down player this year, and he'll replace DL Mike DeVito in the starting lineup.

New York Jets DL Quinton Coples said he felt like he already knew most of what he would need to know about the team's defensive playbook. "The defensive scheme, the majority of it is based off of what we got today," Coples said, "so I grasped the majority of the defensive playbook today." Head coach Rex Ryan laughed, however, when he was told that Coples thinks he has the playbook down. "We love the fact that he thinks he has it down. This is one practice and he has like four defenses in and our library is a little more extensive than that," Ryan said. "And the great thing is we will hold him to it now. So in the meeting that will be our first question, we will come up with something for him."

New York Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine said he was happy with the additions of DE Quinton Coples and LB Demario Davis because they will add speed to a defense that was a little slow last season. "The league is evolving that way to be a pass-first league," Pettine said. "We felt we were getting – for lack of a better phrase – a little dinosaur-ish inside. We feel we needed to increase our athleticism and team speed."

New York Jets DE Quinton Coples will be making a transition from the 4-3 defense, to the 3-4 defense his pro team employs. He thinks the transition will be seamless. "At North Carolina, basically we had a package where we would run a 3-4 so I'm definitely familiar with the package," Coples said. "We also ran (the package) at the Senior Bowl. I'm definitely familiar with the 3-4 scheme. So I'm prepared."
