After weighing 290 pounds last year as a defensive end in a 3-4 scheme, Coples is down to 285 pounds and said he expects to play between 280-285 pounds this upcoming season. "I feel good," Coples said of the switch. "I think it's definitely going to open up more opportunities for me to get to the quarterback and also show my athleticism and drop into coverage."

New York Jets DL Quinton Coples said he felt like he already knew most of what he would need to know about the team's defensive playbook. "The defensive scheme, the majority of it is based off of what we got today," Coples said, "so I grasped the majority of the defensive playbook today." Head coach Rex Ryan laughed, however, when he was told that Coples thinks he has the playbook down. "We love the fact that he thinks he has it down. This is one practice and he has like four defenses in and our library is a little more extensive than that," Ryan said. "And the great thing is we will hold him to it now. So in the meeting that will be our first question, we will come up with something for him."

"At North Carolina, basically we had a package where we would run a 3-4 so I'm definitely familiar with the package," Coples said. "We also ran (the package) at the Senior Bowl. I'm definitely familiar with the 3-4 scheme. So I'm prepared."

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll went the unconventional route once again with the selection of DE Bruce Irvin in the first round. Irvin was considered a second-day pick and the Seahawks passed on the likes of Quinton Coples, Melvin Ingram and Chandler Jones, who were all available when they took Irvin, a situational pass rusher. Carroll said Irvin is the type of player who puts fear in offensive tackles. He is expected to solely be a pass rush option to begin with, but Carroll and general manager John Schneider believe he can eventually develop into an every-down end.

Twenty NFL Draft evaluators named North Carolina DE Quinton Coples as the most likely defensive end bust in this year's draft class. "His interviews are so delusional in terms of him thinking he's one way and everybody else saying that he's another," one personnel man said. "If he doesn't have it in him, people will be waiting for something that's not going to happen." Coples led with 5 1/2 votes, while Memphis DT Dontari Poe and Penn State DT Devon Still each received 3 1/2 votes. "Love Poe's ability," one scout said. "Don't like the way he plays. Pretty good kid. Quiet. Humble. Country. Pretty well-spoken. But he doesn't know what he doesn't know. If you tell him that he doesn't play hard, he's like,'Really?'"
