Redskins | Kirk Cousins not playing

Fri, 19 Aug 2016 17:09:53 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins is not playing in the preseason game against the New York Jets Friday, Aug. 19.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins is receiving a game off and should return to the lineup for the next preseason game. He has one of the better receiver corps to work with and should be a low-end No. 1 or high-end No. 2 quarterback in fantasy leagues.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins playing for big money

Mon, 18 Jul 2016 23:55:43 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins will receive $19.95 million for one year under the tag this year. The team was unwilling to give him a long-term deal, as general manager Scot McCloughan believes he can find a comparable quarterback who will be much cheaper than Cousins at some point in the next year or two.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins is playing for a big contract, as he'll get mega money if he has another strong season in 2016. That extra incentive, along with a healthy receiving corps and top-notch tight end might help him stay on his upward ascension. Heading into 2016 he should be considered as a Top 15 option at his position.

Redskins | Washington made offer to Kirk Cousins

Fri, 15 Jul 2016 12:42:20 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins has received an offer from the Redskins worth $16 million per season with $24 million in guaranteed money. Cousins will play under the franchise tag in 2016 for $20 million.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins likely would receive a better deal next offseason if he plays well this season, so he will play on a one-year deal for now. He will have several weapons to work with in the passing game and will be a low-end No. 1 or a high-end No. 2 quarterback in most fantasy leagues.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins won't land a deal

Fri, 08 Jul 2016 07:17:16 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins has no contract discussions going on, and a source with knowledge of the situation said that no talks will happen. He won't sign a deal before the July 15 deadline for franchise players.

Fantasy Tip: He probably won't "like that," but Cousins established a good building block for his sophomore season as a starter. Some regression from his 4,166 yards and 29 touchdowns will be expected, and you'll have to assess the risk and reward with him as a midrange or low-end QB1 in fantasy.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins talks going nowhere

Thu, 23 Jun 2016 23:21:39 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins has had discussions about a long-term deal over the last week, but talks continue to go nowhere. He's expected to play 2016 on the $19.95 million franchise tender.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins burst onto the scene last season and put himself amongst the midrange of the position in fantasy. The team added another receiver in Josh Doctson in the draft, and Cousins has a path paved to do it again. He'll be in the discussion after the first five quarterbacks or so are taken.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins taking charge

Thu, 16 Jun 2016 11:32:31 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins had some good and bad days during offseason practices, but it's clear that he's taking charge of the offense more and being decisive.

Fantasy Tip: The million dollar question for fantasy owners this year is whether Cousins can repeat his career year from 2015 or even top it. It remains to be seen, but he surely has the weapons to do so again in 2016. Cousins has low-end QB1 appeal but is probably best taken as a top-tier fantasy backup to be safe.

Redskins | Contract not bothering Kirk Cousins

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 14:43:16 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins is not focused on a long-term deal this offseason. The deadline to reach a deal is July 15, and Cousins and the Redskins will not be permitted to negotiate a deal until the end of the 2016 season if they do not reach a deal by July 15.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins is doing and saying the right things heading into 2016. It remains to be seen if last season was an anomaly for Cousins, but drafting him as a low-end QB1 to high-end QB2 is ideal.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins looking to improve

Mon, 13 Jun 2016 10:14:35 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins said receiving all of the snaps with the first-team offense during organized team activities has helped him because he believes he can build on his 2015 performance. "I do think I'm playing with more confidence," Cousins said. "I have a better understanding of defenses and our scheme and our protections and our routes. And, as a result, I'm able to grow as a player."

Fantasy Tip: Cousins is familiar with the offense and should be able to record better numbers with the passing options the team has on the roster. He should be considered a low-end No. 1 or terrific No. 2 quarterback in all fantasy leagues.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins not close to long-term deal

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 09:50:46 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins said there has been no progress in contract talks with the Redskins. The Redskins have until July 15 to work out a long-term contract with Cousins.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins will be the starting quarterback in 2016 and will look to improve on his 2015 stats. He will have several weapons to work with in the passing game this season and should be considered a terrific No. 2 fantasy quarterback in most leagues.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins staying prepared

Tue, 31 May 2016 02:54:43 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins has been calling former NFL quarterbacks for advice on how to approach the offseason. "I've called a few starting quarterbacks around the league, a few of the retired guys who had great careers, and just asked them what worked for them in the offseason" Cousins said.

Fantasy Tip: While he doesn't have a proven history, Cousins showed enough potential last season to be viewed as a high-end QB2 entering 2016.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins expects talks to heat up

Mon, 16 May 2016 16:43:23 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins said he believes long-term contract talks will intensify closer to the July 15 deadline.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins will play for the Redskins for at least one more year and is not worried about his contract status. Cousins played well as the starter in 2015 and will have plenty of weapons to work with on offense. Cousins should be seen as a low-end No. 1 or a terrific No. 2 quarterback in most leagues.

Redskins | Jordan Reed vital to Kirk Cousins

Thu, 05 May 2016 09:51:41 -0700

Washington Redskins TE Jordan Reed's presence on the field successfully skewed QB Kirk Cousins' numbers in 2015. In 421 pass plays with Reed on the field, Cousins threw for 7.7 yards per attempt with a 111.9 passer rating and 24 touchdowns to four interceptions. When Reed wasn't on the field, Cousins threw for 6.2 yards per attempt with five scores, seven interceptions and a 73.3 rating in 148 plays.

The Redskins were 6-1 when Reed earned more than 65 receiving yards this season and 3-4 when the tight end went under that plateau.

Fantasy Tip: Reed had a big 87-952-11 season, and the team supplemented the offense with WR Josh Doctson in the draft. Reed is an upper-middle TE1, and Cousins is around the same range of quarterbacks. Doctson will give a clearer outlook in training camp, but he's not a bad WR4 gamble

Redskins | Kirk Cousins fine with contract status

Mon, 02 May 2016 10:41:40 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins said he is comfortable with playing under the one-year franchise tag if the team wants to see him play in more games before they give him a long-term deal. Cousins also said he would be fine if the team wanted to give him a long-term deal before next season. "I think that people make great decisions when they have a lot of information at their disposal, and if the Redskins would like more information from this next season to be able to make a decision on me long-term, I totally understand that and understand where they're coming from," Cousins said. "If they feel like they have enough information and want to make that call right now, then great, too. But I think the ball's in their court and I will react accordingly to whatever decision they make. But I am totally comfortable playing more football, and frankly, if I don't play well next season, I don't deserve to be back. I don't deserve to have a long-term deal. I want to go out and earn it, and prove myself, and if I need to prove myself again, that's fine. I'll go see if I can do that."

Fantasy Tip: Cousins will be with the Redskins for at least one more season and will have plenty of weapons to work with in the passing game. He is coming off a solid 2015 season and could be a low-end No. 1 quarterback in fantasy leagues next season.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins optimistic for deal

Mon, 02 May 2016 08:07:54 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins is optimistic about signing a long-term deal before the season starts. "I think there's a chance," Cousins said. "The ball's in the court of the Redskins."

Fantasy Tip: Cousins emerged in a big way last season, but was it a fluke? That's the question most owners will have to debate when selecting him as a low-end QB1 this season.

Redskins | Positive negotiations with Kirk Cousins

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 09:56:27 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins and the Redskins continue to talk about a long-term deal, according to general manager Scot McCloughan. The negotiations are considered positive, and McCloughan thinks a deal could be imminent. Cousins signed his franchise tag for close to $20 million on March 3. The deadline for a long-term deal is July 15.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins broke out for 4,166 yards and 29 touchdowns in leading Washington to a playoff berth in 2015. He hadn't played in more than six games before last season. Can Cousins do it again? That's the million dollar question. He should be able to put up nice numbers in the right matchups, but it's safer to draft him as a top-flight fantasy backup.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins wants certain deal

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 16:48:39 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins wants a lengthy, long-term contract from the Redskins -- something in the $19 million per year range, with $40 million in guaranteed money. Washington doesn't view him as that kind of starter yet, though.

Fantasy Tip: It remains to be seen if Cousins' 2015 breakout campaign was an anomaly or a sign of what's to come. He's a fringe starting fantasy quarterback this year, but it's probably safer to draft him as your QB2.

Fri, 11 Mar 2016 16:20:22 -0800

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins is expected to talk about a long-term extension again once free agency dies down, according to president Bruce Allen. Despite placing the franchise tag on Cousins, Washington wants to reach a long-term deal with him.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins cashed in after a breakout season in 2015. He can surely put up QB1 numbers for daily gamers certain weeks, but he's more of a high-end fantasy backup moving forward.

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins plans to fully participate in all aspects of the offseason program and preseason preparation, with or without a long-term, according to a league source.

Fantasy Tip: It sounds like Cousins is focused on continuing to improve as a player, but it remains to be seen if he can repeat his performance from last season. Draft him as a fantasy backup in 2016.

Wed, 02 Mar 2016 23:26:01 -0800

Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins signed his franchise tag Thursday, March 3, and his $20 million salary is fully guaranteed.

Fantasy Tip: Despite his huge payday, Cousins is still not a recommended QB1 in fantasy play. View him more as a bye-week replacement or No. 2 QB in leagues which require two signal callers.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins signing tender

Wed, 02 Mar 2016 17:02:16 -0800

Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins will sign his franchise tender the morning of Thursday, March 3.

Fantasy Tip: As stated earlier, Cousins is coming off a breakout season and should be viewed as a borderline starting fantasy quarterback, just don't get your hopes too high that he'll duplicate last year's output.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins could sign soon

Wed, 02 Mar 2016 16:21:06 -0800

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins could sign his franchise tag soon, according to a source, and possibly as soon as the end of business day Wednesday, March 2.

Fantasy Tip: It would behoove Cousins to sign sooner rather than later. This is a win-win situation for both parties, but especially for the Redskins. They can hold off on a long-term deal for the time being while waiting to see if last season was an anomaly for Cousins. He did have a breakout campaign, but Cousins shouldn't be considered more than a fringe QB1.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins had teams' interest

Tue, 01 Mar 2016 17:36:45 -0800

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins received the franchise tag Tuesday, March 1, but the Denver Broncos, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets were included in the teams who were monitoring his situation beforehand.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins would have been one of the more attractive quarterbacks if he hadn't been tagged. He could still sign a long-term deal, too, but Washington now will have a chance to see if Cousins can duplicate his solid 2015 season. Cousins is not an every-week fantasy starter, though, and is best suited as a bye-week replacement or starter in good matchups.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins plans to sign tender

Tue, 01 Mar 2016 11:56:26 -0800

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins plans to sign his franchise tender and will participate in the offseason program.

Fantasy Tip: It looks like Cousins and the Redskins have avoided what could have been a sticky and tense situation, although it was already somewhat tense in the first place. Cousins has another season to prove last season wasn't a fluke and still gets paid. He's a fringe QB1 but should be viewed more as a QB2.

Redskins | Franchise tag for Kirk Cousins

Tue, 01 Mar 2016 10:30:49 -0800

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins is having the non-exclusive franchise tag placed on him Tuesday, March 1.

Fantasy Tip: Other clubs can still negotiate with Cousins, but the 'Skins have a right to match any offer while trying to get a long-term deal wrapped up. Cousins had a breakout year in 2015 and should be a low-end QB1 consideration in fantasy drafts this fall.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins likely for transition tag

Mon, 29 Feb 2016 06:28:37 -0800

Updating an ongoing story, Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins seems most likely to receive the transition tag before the Tuesday, March 1, deadline.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins figures to stay in Washington next season after a breakout 2015, which pegged him as a midrange QB1 in fantasy.

Redskins | No tag decision for Kirk Cousins yet

Fri, 26 Feb 2016 12:17:52 -0800

Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins' future with the team is still uncertain since the Redskins have not decided if they will place the franchise tag or the transition tag on Cousins at this point, according to a source. It is believed that the team is currently leaning toward not using the franchise tag on Cousins.

Fantasy Tip: The Redskins still have some time to work on a long-term deal with Cousins, but they may allow him to hit the free-agent market if they do not use the franchise tag. Cousins should have a decent chance to start for a team next season and could be a No. 2 quarterback in some fantasy leagues.

Redskins | Washington still talking to Kirk Cousins

Wed, 24 Feb 2016 16:58:38 -0800

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins remains in discussions with the team regarding a long-term contract, although the side appear to have reached an impasse. General manager Scot McCloughan remains optimistic and has said it isn't a foregone conclusion the Redskins would have to apply the franchise tag on Cousins by the March 1 deadline. "There are conversations going on every day. I know (Cousins) respects the Redskins quite a bit, and I know he wants to be here. ... I've been through this many times, and it takes a little time. It's not something you do overnight," McCloughan said.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins is a near-lock to remain in Washington, so the only mystery at the moment is whether or not he will sign long-term or receive the franchise tag. In the extremly likely event Cousins returns to the Redskins, owners can consider him a matchup-based QB2 with upside in 2016.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins deal unlikely?

Wed, 17 Feb 2016 16:17:51 -0800

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins' chances of a long-term deal aren't likely, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins could still receive the franchise tag, but there is a gap in negotiations for a long-term deal and it doesn't look like that deal will get done, at least not in the near future. He'll probably still play for the Redskins next season, the question is how long will he play for them after that? For now, view him as a backup fantasy quarterback.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins was on the mark

Wed, 17 Feb 2016 09:20:49 -0800

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins led the NFL with a 69.8 completion percentage in 2015, which was also good for second-best in franchise history.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins and the 'Skins have broken off talks on a long-term extension, but that doesn't necessarily mean he won't be back in Washington next year. He could have the franchise tag slapped on him. Either way, Cousins' fantastic 2015 season has earned him a starter's job wherever he goes in 2016. His fantasy value would probably be higher if he stayed in Washington, but either way he's likely a low-end QB1.

Wed, 17 Feb 2016 08:28:42 -0800

Updating previous reports, Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins' contract talks aren't contentious, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. However, a long-term deal is not expected anytime soon.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins was awesome after Week 8 last season, and he thrust himself into the midrange QB1 mix.

Redskins | Gap in talks with Kirk Cousins, Redskins

Tue, 16 Feb 2016 11:59:03 -0800

Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins and the Redskins are in ongoing contract talks, but there is a bridge to gap in the negotiations.

Fantasy Tip: If worse comes to worse, then Washington can simply franchise tag Cousins and try to negotiation a long-term deal later on. Cousins proved to be a viable starting quarterback in what was a career year last season, but he's still out of the QB1 conversation.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins not a lock for tag

Tue, 16 Feb 2016 11:52:03 -0800

Updating previous reports, it's not a foregone conclusion that the Washington Redskins would place the franchise tag on impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins if a long-term deal can't be reached by March 1. The Redskins want to keep Cousins, but only at the right price. Placing the tag on him would cost them roughly $20 million for one year.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins had a breakout year as the starting quarterback in Washington and will have plenty of suitors on the open market if he gets there. He has the potential to repeat as a low-end QB1 for fantasy owners, but he'll be even riskier if he has to pack up his bags and start anew.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins' talks end

Tue, 16 Feb 2016 11:04:07 -0800

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins and the Redskins have broken off contract talks at this time, according to a team source. No further talks are scheduled.

Fantasy Tip: The 'Skins could decide to use their franchise tag on Cousins if they want to keep him in 2016 while they work on a long-term extension. After a year accumulating 4,166 yards and 29 touchdowns, it's hard to imagine Washington letting him walk. If he remains in Washington, he's a low-end fantasy starter.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins not close to new deal

Sun, 14 Feb 2016 13:32:39 -0800

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins has not made much progress in his contract talks with the Redskins at this point, according to sources. The team may place the franchise tag on Cousins if the two sides are not able to reach an agreement.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins should be the starting quarterback for the Redskins in 2016, but it is not known what his contract will look like. He finished the season with 4,166 yards and 29 touchdowns. Cousins could be a starting fantasy option against some opponents, but he likely will be a solid No. 2 quarterback in most leagues.

Redskins | Long-term deal for Kirk Cousins?

Wed, 27 Jan 2016 16:03:06 -0800

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins is expected to be re-signed this offseason, and general manager Scot McCloughan prefers signing him to a long-term deal instead of giving their quarterback the franchise tag. A long-term deal would be in the $17-20 million range, according to McCloughan, while Washington would have to pay Cousins about $20 million if they were to tag him.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins was one of the bigger pleasant surprises in football last season, going from unheralded backup to unquestioned starter while leading the Redskins to a NFC East division title and subsequent playoff berth. Those who started Cousins on their fantasy squads in 2015 will have a good taste in their mouths as 2016 approaches, but we still don't know if last season was an anomaly or a sign of things to come.

Redskins | Washington to re-sign Kirk Cousins

Mon, 11 Jan 2016 14:00:54 -0800

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins will be re-signed this offseason, and head coach Jay Gruden said the organization plans to continue to build around their quarterback.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins finally proved he was deserving of his starting status this year, despite the Redskins losing in the first round of the playoffs. Cousins threw 29 touchdowns and 11 interceptions and ran for five touchdowns during the regular season. He should be viewed as a low-end QB1 to high-end QB2 for next season.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins throws for 329 yards

Sun, 10 Jan 2016 18:37:27 -0800

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 29 of his 46 pass attempts for 329 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in the NFC Wild Card Game Sunday, Jan. 10, against the Green Bay Packers. He ran for a touchdown, but also fumbled three times and lost one. He is only the second Redskins QB in franchise history to score a rushing touchdown in the playoffs.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins had a pretty nice season overall, throwing for 4,166 yards and 29 touchdowns. He is the starter heading into 2016, barring an injury in the offseason or training camp, and he is a Top 15-20 fantasy option at his position.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins on high note

Sat, 09 Jan 2016 10:11:47 -0800

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins finished the regular season with three straight games with at least three passing touchdowns.

Fantasy Tip: Unfortunately for Cousins, the Green Bay Packers were a top-five fantasy defense against quarterbacks this season. Cousins definitely plays better at home, though, so should still be a consideration for FantasyScore lineups.

Thu, 07 Jan 2016 10:58:47 -0800

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins' 74.7% completion percentage at home this season is the highest ever in an NFL season, according to Elias.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins ($7,900, 15.8% of cap) is a solid QB1 option against the Green Bay Packers on FantasyScore for the wild-card round.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins consistent this year

Tue, 05 Jan 2016 13:23:55 -0800

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins led the NFL in completion percentage (69.8%) this year and threw a touchdown pass in all 16 games for the first time in Washington history.

Fantasy Tip: While the Green Bay Packers defense has been one of their strengths this year, the Redskins have a legitimate shot at knocking them off with Cousins playing well for much of the year. Green Bay has been a bad fantasy matchup for opposing quarterbacks, too, but you have to at least think Cousins will be serviceable as your starting daily QB.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins is playing as well as any quarterback heading into the postseason, and he could be a solid value at FantasyScore depending on his price tag.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins starting

Thu, 31 Dec 2015 12:16:32 -0800

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins will start in Week 17 against the Dallas Cowboys, according to head coach Jay Gruden, despite the Redskins having nothing to play for. Cousins' snap count is still to be determined.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) is starting, but he may not play very long since the Redskins have nothing to play for as they secured the No. 4 seed last week. It's highly unlikely that Cousins will play the whole game, so it's probably best to avoid him when setting your FantasyScore lineups.

Redskins | Could Redskins rest starters?

Tue, 29 Dec 2015 09:27:52 -0800

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins could be rested for Week 17 as the team has clinched the division crown. "We'll have to wait and see and talk about it as a staff and see where the injury report stands with Kirk and see how he's feeling," head coach Jay Gruden told reporters Tuesday, via the team's official site. "But I think he is pretty injury free, but if he is injury free, a lot will depend on who's playing around him, and go from there."

Fantasy Tip: Cousins ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) could only play a few series against the Dallas Cowboys, and he's not a good FantasyScore start.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins tosses four scores

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 31 of 46 passes for 365 yards and four touchdowns in a 38-24 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 16.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins has three straight 300-yard passing games and back-to-back four-touchdown performances. He is hitting his stride and looks like a viable starter at FantasyScore the rest of the way.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins settling in

Thu, 24 Dec 2015 19:53:08 -0800

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins said his job has become easier as the season has progressed because he has been able to develop a routine.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins ($7,600, 15.2% of cap) has topped 300 yards in five of his last eight games, and he has thrown for 16 touchdowns and just three interceptions during the stretch. His best games have come a home this year, but as well as he has been playing, he is still worth a look at FantasyScore in Week 16 in a road matchup with a shaky Philadelphia defense.
