Redskins | Colt McCoy, Kirk Cousins battling

Fri, 21 Aug 2015 16:58:55 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Colt McCoy replaced QB Robert Griffin III (concussion, shoulder) when he was injured in the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 20, not QB Kirk Cousins. Cousins is expected to be the backup entering the season, but head coach Jay Gruden said it remains an "open competition" for the backup job.

Fantasy Tip: With RG3 already injured behind a porous offensive line, there's a good chance that we see Washington's backup quarterback at some point this season. Cousins has more fantasy upside, but turnovers remain a big issue. Neither Cousins nor McCoy should be drafted.

Jets | Geno Smith nearly replaced by Cousins

Fri, 21 Aug 2015 09:39:54 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith was nearly replaced by Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins, whom the team would have traded for if they hired Dan Quinn as head coach. Quinn wanted to bring Kyle Shanahan aboard as offensive coordinator, and the tandem sought to acquire Cousins to be the starting quarterback for the Jets.

Fantasy Tip: Ryan Fitzpatrick has a chance to keep the starting job once Smith returns from his broken jaw. Both signal callers are QB2's that should be left on waivers except in deeper leagues.

Redskins | Jamison Crowder making plays

Sat, 01 Aug 2015 19:25:19 -0700

Washington Redskins WR Jamison Crowder has stood out in training camp, and he was on the receiving end of a 50-yard pass from QB Kirk Cousins Friday, July 31. "He has done a great job," head coach Gruden said. "He's very smart. He went to Duke and understands the passing game, understands route concepts. He has got good, strong hands, [is] very quick in and out of breaks. But he does have a role as a punt returner, for sure."

Redskins | Washington backup QB job up for grabs

Thu, 18 Jun 2015 21:06:52 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Colt McCoy and QB Kirk Cousins have created no separation from each other in their battle to be the primary backup quarterback in 2015, and head coach Jay Gruden said their performance in the preseason games could be the deciding factor.

Fantasy Tip: With Robert Griffin III slated to start, McCoy and Cousins will need an injury or extremely poor play on the part of RGIII to have any fantasy value in 2015.

Redskins | Competition not going away for RGIII

Sun, 29 Mar 2015 16:28:32 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III will be the first-team quarterback during offseason workouts, according to head Jay Gruden, but Gruden also said he expects QB Kirk Cousins and QB Colt McCoy to be on the roster when the regular season begins.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin has the most upside among the three, but his injury history and the lack of support he seems to have received from the coaching staff at times makes him a high-risk, high-reward fantasy option. He is worth taking a chance on in drafts but only after you have secured a more reliable starting quarterback.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins in the mix for Redskins?

Wed, 11 Feb 2015 17:30:34 -0800

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins should have the opportunity to battle Redskins QB Robert Griffin III for the team's starting quarterback position, in the opinion of The Washington Post's Mike Jones. Jones noted Cousins displayed better feel in the pocket than Griffin but also acknowledged that Cousins was unable to avoid turnovers.

Fantasy Tip: Redskins head coach Jay Gruden was able to coax positive fantasy contributions out of all of the team's quarterbacks at one point or another during the 2014 season. If Cousins is able to unseat Griffin as the team's starter, he would have QB2 value.

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins said he has not asked for a trade and will be fine if he is a backup against next season. Cousins said he knows there are things he needs to work on during the offseason of improve his play.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should watch Cousins' situation this offseason because there is a chance he could be traded, which could improve his value. Cousins could also compete for the starting job in Washington, but he probably should not be drafted in fantasy leagues next year.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins itching for opportunity

Mon, 29 Dec 2014 08:49:33 -0800

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins said it would be tough to return to the team in 2015 if QB Robert Griffin III was given the starting job. Cousins said he would talk to the front office.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins would be a mid-to-low QB2 if he became a starting quarterback with Washington or elsewhere. Griffin has more upside because of the added running element, but he's in the same boat in traditional leagues.

Redskins | Robert Griffin to be tested Wednesday

Mon, 20 Oct 2014 09:39:32 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (ankle) is expected to be put through a rigorous workout Wednesday, Oct. 22, that will give team officials a better idea of where he's at in his recovery. Griffin has already joined practices for stretching, warm-ups, individual drills and limited handoffs with the scout team. Head coach Jay Gruden has said he'd like to have Griffin log at least two weeks of practice before returning to a starting role. QB Colt McCoy appears to have the inside track to start in Week 8 against the Dallas Cowboys if it's between he and QB Kirk Cousins. "It's a good sign the way Colt finished the game, ran the offense," Gruden said, alluding to his poise and efficiency in engineering the game-winning touchdown drive on the last possession, which started with 3 minutes and 14 seconds remaining. "Very smart and very efficient. Did some good things."

Fantasy Tip: It would be a surprise to see Griffin start against the Cowboys on Monday night. McCoy will be cheap at FantasyScore, but he's not worth considering on the road against a a stout Dallas D.

Sun, 19 Oct 2014 12:17:04 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Colt McCoy entered the team's Week 7 game after QB Kirk Cousins was benched.

Fantasy Tip: McCoy likely would be a short-term option at quarterback since Robert Griffin should return in the near future. Owners should not consider starting Kirk Cousins or Colt McCoy if they are the options next week.

Redskins | Pierre Garcon backs Kirk Cousins

Wed, 15 Oct 2014 10:11:08 -0700

Washington Redskins WR Pierre Garcon said the team has plenty of confidence in QB Kirk Cousins despite the team's four-game losing streak in which Cousins has struggled mightily at times. "He's just taking in a lot of stuff right now, but once he gets through this, honestly, he'll be good to go," said Garcon. Cousins has 18 touchdowns, 18 interceptions and five fumbles in 13 career games. Cousins is expected to start in Week 7 against the Tennessee Titans.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins will cost $7,000 (14.0% of cap) at FantasyScore this week. Although he has a nice matchup against the Tennessee Titans, it's hard to place too much trust in him for your lineups.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins won't be benched

Tue, 14 Oct 2014 11:19:17 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins is not in danger of being benched in favor of QB Colt McCoy after the team lost their fourth straight game in Week 6, according to head coach Jay Gruden. Cousins now leads the league with eight interceptions, with seven of them coming in the last three games.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins ($7,000 at FantasyScore this week) faces a weak Tennessee Titans defense in Week 7 at home. Cousins isn't an ideal option for your lineup, but he profiles as a sleeper pick this weekend if you're feeling bold.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins to use whole field

Sun, 05 Oct 2014 09:57:19 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins won't be limited to half the field because of Seattle Seahawks CB Richard Sherman in the team's Week 5 game Monday, Oct. 6, according to head coach Jay Gruden.

Fantasy Tip: Coming off a dreadful performance in Week 4 and facing a tough Seattle secondary, Cousins is going to have a tough time living up to his $7,500 salary (15% of cap). Owners will want to look elsewhere for a quarterback at FantasyScore in Week 5.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins throws four picks

Thu, 25 Sep 2014 21:38:54 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 19 of his 33 pass attempts for 257 yards and had one touchdown and four interceptions Thursday, Sept. 25. He also lost a fumble.

Fantasy Tip: With a couple more starts like this one, Cousins can forget about hanging on to the starting job when RGIII is healthy. Although he has had some impressive performances, don't forget that Cousins is still relatively inexperienced and is likely to provide inconsistent results from week to week.

Redskins | RGIII accepting of backup role?

Thu, 25 Sep 2014 18:01:28 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (ankle) could return as the team's backup If QB Kirk Cousins plays well in the coming weeks, and according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, the team believes that Griffin is a "team guy" and would accept a backup role.

Fantasy Tip: Although a potential quarterback controversy is brewing, it won't amount to much if Cousins doesn't play well while Griffin is sidelined. Cousins has looked promising in limited action, but it will be interesting to see how he performs now that defenses will be game planning specifically for him. In the meantime, he is an unproven commodity and a risky play at FantasyScore.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins bad for the long run?

Thu, 25 Sep 2014 10:38:29 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins has played well in relief of QB Robert Griffin III both this season and last year, but there is a trend that has continued in Cousins' two games this year: teams have been able to figure him out as the games go along. He completed his first 12 passes against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2 and opened the game with eight straight completions against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 3, but then he completed only around half of his remaining throws in those games. Down the stretch last year, Cousins' stats were worse with each loss, and he threw four touchdowns to five interceptions down the stretch.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins will find it hard to top his Week 3 performance Thursday night against the New York Giants. He could still put up a respectable stat line, but it may be hard for him to return on his $8,700 FantasyScore salary.

Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden did not rule out QB Kirk Cousins permanently replacing QB Robert Griffin III at quarterback. "Crazy things have happened in NFL," Gruden said. "I'm not going to discount anything"

Fantasy Tip: This will something to monitor as RG3 gets closer to being ready to go, even though it is probably a bit of a long shot at the moment that a permanent switch happens.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins a pocket passer

Fri, 19 Sep 2014 09:43:00 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins is more of a pocket passer than QB Robert Griffin III, and Cousins sees the field better. Cousins kept the team out of danger in Week 2 by quickly throwing the ball at a receiver's feet with a rusher in his face instead of trying to force the ball downfield like Griffin has frequently done. Cousins may not be as dangerous as Griffin in zone-read plays, but Cousins has shown he can make good, quick decisions in the pocket after going through his progressions quickly.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins is still learning, but he could find success in place of Griffin, because this system seems to fit him the best. His numbers won't always be eye-popping, but for instance, he could easily return great value on his $7,600 FantasyScore salary against the Philadelphia Eagles this weekend.

Redskins | Robert Griffin could return in eight weeks

Wed, 17 Sep 2014 14:11:47 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (ankle) could return around eight weeks after head coach Jon Gruden said Griffin will be in a cast for the next 10 days. After that, he'll likely spend four to six weeks rehabbing his dislocated left ankle. QB Kirk Cousins will continue to start in place of Griffin in the meantime.

Fantasy Tip: You can avoid Griffin at FantasyScore for a while, and he may not be of much use when he returns, either. Meanwhile, Cousins ($7,600) is an attractive option against the Philadelphia Eagles if you're willing to pass up some of the bigger names at quarterback.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins better suited for offense?

Mon, 15 Sep 2014 14:09:44 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins has the skill set suited for what head coach Jay Gruden wants to do with the offense, according to a person with knowledge of Gruden's thinking. Gruden thinks Cousins can succeed in the offense better than QB Robert Griffin III (ankle), but Gruden understood it would have been impossible to make a quarterback change without Griffin being injured. Gruden was having a hard time getting Griffin to grasp the drop-back passing system the last few months.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins looked good replacing Griffin, going 22-for-33 for 250 yards and two touchdowns against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He has another nice matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 3, and he might be worth a play in FantasyScore with what will likely be a bargain price.

Redskins | No QB controversy in Washington

Mon, 25 Aug 2014 16:13:12 -0700

Washington Redskins QBs Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins aren't involved in any kind of quarterback controversy, according to head coach Jay Gruden. The first-team offense has yet to score a touchdown in the preseason, and Cousins has somewhat outplayed Griffin so far.

Fantasy Tip: We're still in the preseason, folks. Griffin would have to really tank early in the season or get injured for the 'Skins to think about a switch to Cousins. There is a lot to worry about with Griffin, but because of his poor performance in the preseason so far, he could be undervalued on your draft day.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins outperforming RGIII?

Mon, 11 Aug 2014 11:55:14 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins was the best quarterback on the team during the Redskins-Patriots joint practices, according to ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss. Reiss said Cousins had better mechanics, was more decisive with his ball release and ran the offense better than QB Robert Griffin III.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin will likely remain the starter, but it's not encouraging if the backup is starting to look better than him. If Griffin can stay healthy, he still has the ability to produce at a high level under new head coach Jay Gruden.
