Jets | Kirk Cousins could see $60 million in first year

Tue, 20 Feb 2018 07:00:34 -0800

Updating previous reports, Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins could receive an offer from the New York Jets that would give him $60 million guaranteed in the first year of the contract, according to a league source.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins will be at worst a midrange QB1 option next season, but the Jets don't offer a lot of upside if he lands there.

Updating previous reports, Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins could receive an offer from the New York Jets with a fully guaranteed contract, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins will be at least a midrange QB1 in fantasy next season, but signing with the Jets wouldn't provide the most upside.

Redskins | A Kirk Cousins tag and trade not realistic

Mon, 19 Feb 2018 13:30:25 -0800

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins could theoretically be franchise tagged by the Redskins, but if that were to occur then Cousins would not entertain a long-term deal with his new team and he would make a whopping $34 million under the tag. If Cousins did not immediately sign the tag, he could not be traded anyway. Furthermore, the Redskins would not be able to do much else in free agency and also just traded for Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith.

Fantasy Tip: Tagging Cousins makes no sense from Washington's perspective, especially considering the recent acquisition of Smith. Cousins will be playing in a new city in 2018 and the Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, New York Jets and Cleveland Browns are the most realistic suitors. Cousins will be a QB1 option wherever he plays, although Minnesota is his best-case scenario on paper.

Jets | NYJ all-in on Kirk Cousins

Mon, 19 Feb 2018 07:34:43 -0800

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins will have heavy pursuit from the New York Jets, who are prepared to pay "whatever it takes" to land him, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins will be an upper-level QB1 wherever he lands, but the Jets might be one of the worst landing places for him in fantasy next season.

Broncos | DEN favored for Kirk Cousins?

Mon, 19 Feb 2018 07:19:31 -0800

Washington Redskins impending free-agent Kirk Cousins is favored to sign with the Denver Broncos, in the opinion of SI.com's Peter King.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins has been on the fringe of an elite fantasy quarterback the last couple of years without a lot around him. If he went to Denver to throw to established receivers, he could firmly entrench himself in the top-five at the position.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins to file grievance if tagged

Sun, 18 Feb 2018 11:23:00 -0800

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins will file a grievance if the Redskins decide to place the franchise tag on him, according to a source. Cousins can argue that the Redskins would be violating the collective bargaining agreement because the team would have no intention in having long-term contract talks with him or having him play on the franchise tag.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins likely will be playing with another team next season, but it is not known if he will hit the free-agent market or if the Redskins will look to trade him. Cousins has played well over the last few seasons and can be a No. 1 fantasy quarterback depending on his new team.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins the best available QB?

Sat, 10 Feb 2018 20:19:31 -0800

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins is the "safest bet at the position, in free agency or the draft," according to an NFL executive.

Fantasy Tip: Several teams are likely to make a run at Cousins this offseason. He has thrown at least 25 touchdowns and topped 4,000 yards in each of the last three seasons and should be able to provide QB1 numbers no matter where he ends up.

Browns | Cleveland won't pursue Kirk Cousins?

Sun, 04 Feb 2018 18:40:43 -0800

The Cleveland Browns are not likely to be serious contenders to sign Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins, according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Cabot believes the Browns are more likely to select a quarterback with the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and pursue a lower-tier quarterback in free agency.

Fantasy Tip: Even if Cleveland isn't in the running, Cousins will have no shortage of suitors this offseason. Expect him to be a QB1 candidate regardless of how free agency shakes out.

Vikings | Kirk Cousins wants to be in Minnesota?

Sun, 04 Feb 2018 18:11:24 -0800

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins has the Minnesota Vikings "number one with a bullet" on the list of teams he'd like to play for in 2018, according to Paul Allen of KFAN Minneapolis.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins has said he wants to go to a team capable of winning right away, and the Vikings fit that mold. With all three of Minnesota's current quarterbacks heading to free agency, the Vikings could be in the market. Wherever Cousins lands, he should be able to provide low-end QB1 production.

Redskins | WAS could place franchise tag on Kirk Cousins

Sun, 04 Feb 2018 06:41:00 -0800

The Washington Redskins are considering placing the franchise tag on QB Kirk Cousins in order to trade him and recover some of the compensation they sent to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for QB Alex Smith, according to multiple sources.

Fantasy Tip: Without the tag being applied to Cousins, the Redskins would receive no compensation and he would be eligible to sign anywhere as a true unrestricted free agent when the new football year begins March 14. Regardless of where he winds up next season, Cousins should be viewed as a low-end QB1 in all fantasy formats.

Broncos | Kirk Cousins eyeing Denver?

Fri, 02 Feb 2018 20:50:34 -0800

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins said he would "love" if the Denver Broncos showed interest in signing him this offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Denver has some solid weapons in the passing game, and Cousins should have no problem delivering QB1 value if ends up a Bronco.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins surprised by Alex Smith trade

Fri, 02 Feb 2018 11:38:33 -0800

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins said he was surprised when he heard about the Redskins' agreement to acquire Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith.

Fantasy Tip: Smith will be the Redskins starting quarterback for the next several seasons and probably should be considered a high-end No. 2 quarterback in fantasy leagues. Cousins should receive a lucrative contract from a team this offseason and can be a low-end No. 1 fantasy quarterback depending on the team.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins excited about free agency

Fri, 02 Feb 2018 11:20:37 -0800

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins said he is looking forward to hitting the free-agent market because he has not been able to choose the team he plays for since college. He said he will be looking to sign with a team that can win a championship.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins should have several interested teams during free agency and likely will receive a lucrative contract. He has posted good numbers over the last several seasons and can be considered a No. 1 fantasy quarterback next season depending on his new team.

Bills | Kirk Cousins won't see Bills' pursuit

Thu, 01 Feb 2018 06:19:06 -0800

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins is unlikely to be pursued by the Buffalo Bills, in the opinion of beat writer Mark Gaughan.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins will have many suitors if he hits the open market as expected. In the best-case scenario, he's an upper-tier QB1, and he could slot no further than the tail end of the midrange QB1 territory.

Jets | Jets expected to go after Kirk Cousins

Wed, 31 Jan 2018 20:36:17 -0800

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins has drawn the attention of "quarterback-needy teams," with the New York Jets "expected" to be one of his suitors, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN.com.

Fantasy Tip: This is a no-brainer, as the Jets have been seeking a franchise quarterback for what seems like an eternity, and clearly, their young options in place at the moment have no chance of leading a winning football team. If Cousins were to come to NY, he'd have some quality weapons in Robby Anderson and Jermaine Kearse, which would certainly allow him to continue having a QB1 ceiling.

Broncos | Von Miller wants Kirk Cousins

Wed, 31 Jan 2018 10:34:32 -0800

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins would be welcomed by Denver Broncos LB Von Miller. "Kirk could take us over the edge," Miller said, "but that's the National Football League. There are a lot of teams that need Kirk."

Fantasy Tip: Miller is right, and some of those teams have a lot more salary cap space than the Broncos, although Cousins has said he wants to be on a winning team. Even if Cousins joins the Cleveland Browns or New York Jets, he will remain a QB1 candidate.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins wants winning team

Tue, 30 Jan 2018 12:03:22 -0800

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins won't be solely focused on how much money he can make this offseason. He wants to be on a team that will contend for the Super Bowl. "Is money a part of it? Sure. Is it the only thing? No," Cousins said. "It is about winning, and that's what I want more than anything, so I'm going to be willing to make sacrifices or do what has to be done to make sure I'm in the best possible position to win, and that's what the focus is going to be."

Fantasy Tip: Cousins will be the most coveted quarterback on the free-agent market and is headed for a big payday. He performed well in 2017 even without a reliable supporting cast. Cousins has been a solid QB1 the last three seasons and should remain a QB1 candidate no matter where he plays.

Browns | Joe Thomas wants Kirk Cousins

Sun, 28 Jan 2018 19:36:28 -0800

Cleveland Browns OT Joe Thomas said he wants the front office to use cap space to sign Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins.

Fantasy Tip: Cleveland might not be the best landing spot for Cousins' fantasy value, but he'd have to throw early and often to try to keep the Browns in games. No matter where he plays in 2018, Cousins should at least be a low-end QB1.

Redskins | Former GM critical of Kirk Cousins

Sat, 20 Jan 2018 20:44:53 -0800

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins isn't a "special" player, according to former general manager Scot McCloughan. "You just need to have some talent around him because you don't want him to be throwing the ball 35 to 40 times to win the game," McCloughan said.

Fantasy Tip: Despite the critique, every team in need of a quarterback will likely be interested in Cousins this offseason. He will likely be a low-end QB1 candidate wherever he ends up.

Redskins | Jay Gruden wants long-term answer at QB

Mon, 08 Jan 2018 10:35:08 -0800

Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said he prefers that impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins signs a long-term deal or the team moves onto another quarterback. "I think something has to be done," Gruden said. "I personally don't want to go through another one-year deal, and just [keep going] one year, one year. I think you want to have a quarterback in here that's going to be here. And hopefully that is Kirk, and if not, we have to move on and do what we have to do as an organization."

Fantasy Tip: Cousins has received the franchise tag for each of the last two seasons and could receive it again if the two sides are not able to agree on a new deal. Cousins can be a No. 1 fantasy quarterback if he returns to the Redskins next season.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins will sign offer if tagged

Fri, 05 Jan 2018 14:43:17 -0800

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins said he would sign the one-year tender offer if he receives the franchise tag again this offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins has received the franchise tag in each of the last two offseasons, so it will be expensive if the Redskins decide to use it for a third time. He would receive interest from multiple teams if he hits the free-agent market and should receive a lucrative offer this offseason. Cousins likely will be a starting quarterback next season and could be a low-end No. 1 fantasy quarterback depending on his team.

RB Kapri Bibbs led the team with 47 rushing yards on 12 attempts, while Cousins had a 12-yard touchdown run on his only rush. RB Samaje Perine ran twice for just three yards. Bibbs also led the team in receiving with 53 yards on a game-high eight catches, and WR Josh Doctson finished with four grabs and 37 yards. WR Jamison Crowder posted three catches for 25 yards, and WR Ryan Grant ended up with two catches with 23 yards. TE Vernon Davis rounded things out with two snares for 20 yards.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins makes franchise history

Mon, 25 Dec 2017 13:21:21 -0800

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins became the first quarterback in Redskins' history with three seasons of at least 25 touchdown passes.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins will be one of the biggest names in free agency next offseason after receiving Washington's franchise tag for two straight years. It's difficult to gauge his fantasy value not knowing where he'll be playing, but it's unlikely that he'll lose much fantasy value and should remain in the QB1 conversation.

Redskins | Three scores for Kirk Cousins

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 19 of his 37 passes for 299 yards, three touchdowns and an interception in a 27-11 win over the Denver Broncos in Week 16.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins delivered against a solid Denver defense, and he has now tossed multiple touchdowns in five of his last six games. Roll him out as a QB1 against the New York Giants in the season finale.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins tosses two TDs

Sun, 17 Dec 2017 14:19:02 -0800

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 18 of his 26 pass attempts for 196 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 15 game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins has thrown for 196 or fewer yards in each of the past two games, but he is working on a streak of six games with at least one TD pass. In Week 16 he'll face a Broncos pass defense which ranked No. 2 in yardage, but No. 32 in passing scores allowed.

Redskins | Ugly outing for Kirk Cousins

Sun, 10 Dec 2017 20:23:57 -0800

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 15 of his 27 passes for 151 yards, a touchdown and an interception in a 30-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 14.

Fantasy Tip: Washington's passing attack was derailed by the pass rush of the Chargers, and Cousins finished with his lowest yardage total of the season. He should be back in the QB1 mix against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 15.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins uneven in loss

Thu, 30 Nov 2017 21:33:36 -0800

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins was 26-for-37 for 251 yards passing, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the team's 24-point loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, Nov. 30. Cousins was also sacked four times and fumbled twice, losing one.

Fantasy Tip: It's hard to fault Cousins for much Thursday night. He had no running game, protection issues and both of his picks came off deflections -- one at the line and one off the hands of Jamison Crowder. How much things will improve between now and Week 14, when they face a dangerous Los Angeles Chargers pass rush on the road, is debatable, making the early prospects for Cousins less than ideal.

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 19 of his 31 passes for 242 yards, two touchdowns and an interception and was sacked six times in a 20-10 win over the New York Giants Thursday, Nov. 23.

Fantasy Tip: Washington's offensive line was missing four starters at times, but Cousins survived to post a serviceable stat line. He will be in the QB1 mix in Week 13 against a struggling Dallas Cowboys team.

Redskins | Three scores for Kirk Cousins

Sun, 19 Nov 2017 18:27:21 -0800

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 22 of his 32 passes for 322 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-31 loss to the New Orleans Saints in Week 11.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins had thrown one touchdown or less in his three previous games, so Sunday's performance offers hope for fantasy owners. He could be a low-end QB1 against the New York Giants in Week 12.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins runs for two TDs

Sun, 12 Nov 2017 18:11:50 -0800

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 26 of his 45 pass attempts for 327 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the Week 10 game against the Minnesota Vikings. He also ran for a pair of touchdowns.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins has tossed just two TDs over his past three games, but the rushing scores and big passing yardage helped fantasy owners in this one. He remains a low-end QB1 fantasy option heading into Week 11 on the road against the New Orleans Saints.

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 21 of his 31 pass attempts for 247 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 9 game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Fantasy Tip: The performance by Cousins, and particularly Washington as a whole, was shocking. The team was missing two tight ends, several offensive linemen and Jamison Crowder, a top receiver, but they went on the road and won a tough road game.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins too conservative?

Sat, 04 Nov 2017 18:29:40 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins needs to take more shots down the field, according to head coach Jay Gruden. "That's probably the one area that we can force the issue on a little bit to give these receivers chances down the field," Gruden said.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins will be playing in a tough environment at Seattle in Week 9, and he could have trouble creating big plays with multiple starters missing along the offensive line and in the receiving corps. If you have a quality backup with a solid matchup, you may want to bench Cousins.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins leads shorthanded offense

Fri, 03 Nov 2017 16:09:46 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins will be facing the Seattle Seahawks in Week 9, but he will not have two tight ends, two starting offensive linemen, a key reserve lineman and he might also be missing his top wide receiver.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins is a very risky fantasy play, as he could be on his back a lot. And when he is able to throw, he'll have the dependable Vernon Davis, but Jordan Reed and Niles Paul are already out. Jamison Crowder might also be sidelined. It's a MASH unit in Washington right now, and Cousins could struggle against an aggressive Seahawks defense as a result.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins has real strong showing on MNF

Mon, 23 Oct 2017 21:25:20 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 30 of 40 passes for 303 yards, while also tossing three touchdown passes and one interception in the team's Week 7 game Monday, Oct. 23, versus the Philadelphia Eagles. In addition, he picked up 18 rushing yards on three carries.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins has now registered 300-yard efforts in three of his last four games, amassing 10 touchdowns compared to just two interceptions over that span. He's typically a lower-end QB1 to roll with, but ever since his disappointing performance in the season opener, Cousins has actually been amongst the best quarterbacks in all of football. If he keeps up his recent play, he'll continue to be a viable option for all leagues.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins scores three times

Sun, 15 Oct 2017 18:42:17 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 25 of his 37 passes for 330 yards, two touchdowns and an interception and ran four times for 26 yards and a touchdown in a 26-24 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Week 6.

Fantasy Tip: Washington almost blew a big lead, but Cousins finished with a strong stat line and has now accounted for multiple touchdowns in three straight games. Up next is a rematch with a Philadelphia Eagles team that kept Cousins in check in Week 1, but he is playing well enough to deploy as a low-end QB1.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins churns out solid MNF outing

Mon, 02 Oct 2017 21:06:32 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 14 of 24 passes for 215 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the team's Week 4 loss Monday, Oct. 2, against the Kansas City Chiefs. He also added seven rushes for 38 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Despite registering his fewest pass attempts in a game since last December, Cousins ended up being efficient anyway in terms of fantasy scoring. It also helped that he didn't turn the ball over. Cousins continues to serve as a fine lower-end QB1 and as impressive as he's been over the last few seasons, 2017 is shaping up to be his best one yet, as he's on pace for a career-high QB rating.

Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins (non-injury) fully participated in practice Saturday, Sept. 30, and is not on the injury report for Week 4.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins is coming off his best game of the season in Week 3 where he threw for 365 yards and three touchdowns. He may be without some of his receivers and will be facing a tough Kansas City Chiefs defense but can still be considered a low-end No. 1 quarterback in most leagues.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins back at practice Saturday

Sat, 30 Sep 2017 10:45:30 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins (non-injury) returned to practice Saturday, Sept. 30, after leaving the team for a day to be with his wife for the birth of their first child.

Fantasy Tip: This means Cousins should be find to face the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football. Playing against the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium is usually difficult for any quarterback, so owners shouldn't hesitate benching Cousins this week if they have similar options with a better matchup.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins sits out Friday

Fri, 29 Sep 2017 14:50:20 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins (non-injury) did not practice Friday, Sept. 29, as he awaits the birth of his first child. If Cousins chooses to sit out Week 4, QB Colt McCoy would replace him in the lineup Monday versus the Kansas City Chiefs. "We're getting Colt ready to play," head coach Jay Gruden said.

Fantasy Tip: The child was supposed to be delivered last weekend and Cousins still played, so consider him likely to go Monday night. However, there is always an off chance he has to sit, so have a backup plan. McCoy shouldn't be used unless you have zero options.

Redskins | Josh Doctson earning trust

Thu, 28 Sep 2017 19:48:47 -0700

Washington Redskins WR Josh Doctson is continuing to earn the trust of QB Kirk Cousins, according to head coach Jay Gruden. "And that's something that's got to continue to develop because Josh can do things not many people can do when the ball is in the air," Gruden said. "I think with that will hopefully come more opportunity for him to make plays down the field on the ball where he looks like he might be covered but Kirk might give him a chance."

Fantasy Tip: Doctson caught a long touchdown in Week 3, but that is his lone catch on the year. The upside is there, but he is a lottery ticket at this point.

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 25 of his 30 passes for 365 yards and three touchdowns in a 27-10 win over the Oakland Raiders in Week 3.

Fantasy Tip: After a sloppy start to the year, Cousins had a breakout performance against Oakland. His QB1 upside is undeniable, but Cousins could be a boom-or-bust option on the road against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 4.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins is being paid like an elite quarterback, but so far he has passed for just 419 yards and two touchdowns with one interception through two games. Not good. He might recover in Week 3 in a potential shootout against Oakland on Sunday Night Football.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins mediocre in Week 1

Sun, 10 Sep 2017 14:01:55 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins was 23-for-40 for 240 yards with one touchdown and an interception in a 30-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Sept. 10.

Fantasy Tip: Philadelphia was 13th in the league in pass defense last year with 239.5 yards given up per game. The number of dropped balls and missed opportunities could be a concern, but this is also a big rivalry. The fact Cousins couldn't close the deal at home could be something to watch, but Cousins had a subpar preseason and this could be a hangover. Keep him as a QB1 for now.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins falls flat

Sun, 27 Aug 2017 17:08:49 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 10 of his 19 passes for 109 yards and an interception in a 23-17 preseason win over the Cincinnati Bengals Sunday, Aug. 27.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins hasn't made many big plays this preseason, and Washington's revamped receiving corps could be contributing to the slow start. While the faces have changed a bit, he still has plenty of weapons at his disposal, so expect him to iron things out sooner rather than later and put together another season of QB1 production.

Redskins | Quiet debut for Josh Doctson

Sat, 19 Aug 2017 21:11:24 -0700

Washington Redskins WR Josh Doctson (hamstring) made his preseason debut Saturday, Aug. 19, and finished with one catch for 12 yards in a 21-17 loss to the Green Bay Packers, and John Keim of ESPN.com believes Doctson and QB Kirk Cousins need more time to work together to develop trust.

Fantasy Tip: Injuries have stunted Doctson's growth, but a steady role in a solid passing attack makes him worth grabbing as an upside WR5.
