Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly said there is concern about the team's defense, but they are also not showing everything in preseason games. "If I said it wasn't a concern, I'd be lying. …But you also have to take into consideration we're not showing everything."

Sun, 10 Aug 2014 23:25:14 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles WR Jordan Matthews caught only four passes for 14 yards in the team's first preseason game, prompting coach Chip Kelly to express disappointment. "I thought he was just inconsistent," Kelly said. "I don't know if he was pressing or whatever. But there were some inconsistencies there. Some guys, it's the first time in the bright lights. [They] get the chance to get that out of the system, get a deep breath."

Panthers | Jason Avant clashed with Chip Kelly

Wed, 25 Jun 2014 09:27:04 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Jason Avant said he did not approve of his standing with head coach Chip Kelly last season with the Philadelphia Eagles. Avant said he "mostly ran clear-out routes. ... When it came to certain things, we butted heads sometimes -- route running and route technique. So I knew I didn't fit his system."

Fantasy Tip: Avant wasn't the field-stretching type of slot receiver Kelly likes to use. In Carolina, the vet won't be much more than a bye-week replacement type but will have several big games. Good luck figuring out when to play him.

Eagles | Offseason offensive work looks fast

Fri, 30 May 2014 06:33:55 -0700

The Philadelphia Eagles' organized team activities have displayed their intent to move a lot faster and increase the amount of plays run, in the observation of Nick Fierro. They were quick in moving to the line of scrimmage even before the whistle blew. "We're just running as many reps as we can so we can get it on tape and teach them," head coach Chip Kelly said. "... What we're trying to do is, can we get a maximum number of reps for everybody, because we do have three and four groups, both offensively and defensively? Let's just get a lot of stuff on tape so we can teach off it."

Fantasy Tip: Of course, such an overwhelming pace allowed the offense to dominate last year before they fell apart, for numerous reasons. Of course LeSean McCoy should have another elite year, but the other fantasy-relevant members of this offense in their second year with this system -- Nick Foles, Jeremy Maclin (despite his injury), Riley Cooper, Zach Ertz -- could be in line for huge steps forward with this continuity.

After three full seasons, Henery has converted just 2-for-5 attempts from 50 yards or beyond. At the end of the game Saturday, Jan. 4, coach Chip Kelly was reluctant to talk about the future of his kicker but admitted his dissatisfaction with how Henery hit kickoffs during the loss. Eagles | Coach wants more plays run on offense

Sat, 21 Sep 2013 06:25:02 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly said he wants more plays run on offense, and is not concerned with time of possession numbers. "Time of possession means nothing," Kelly said. "They're running a lot more plays, and we're not running enough plays. That's the whole argument I've always had with the time of possession. A team can hold it for 40 minutes, but if they run the same amount of plays, that's a different deal. "Right now, we're not running enough plays on offense. We're turning the ball over too much. We're not executing the way we're supposed to execute. That's what we have to do to keep our defense off the field."

Eagles | Nick Foles still getting first-team practice reps

Sat, 14 Sep 2013 06:01:46 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles is still getting practice reps with the first-team offense in practice. Head coach Chip Kelly's practices are fast paced, which allows for extra reps for the backup quarterback. "You've got to make sure that you get your [backups] some reps," Kelly said, adding that it's the same way with the backup offensive linemen. "They [also] get a lot of work when we are presenting the other team's look. ... so Nick is getting reps in that standpoint, too. But it's important to make sure all those guys get some reps."

Eagles | Chip Kelly not satisfied with offense

Tue, 10 Sep 2013 11:34:54 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly thinks his offense needs to be faster and quicker than what it was in their Week 1 win over the Washington Redskins. "We left the ball on the ground too much. We didn't get the ball to the officials. We could have sped things up from a process in between plays. That's something we need to work on," he said. The Eagles ran 53 plays in the first half alone and gained 322 total yards. However, they ran only 24 offensive plays in the second half. Redskins LB Brian Orakpo said their defense made an adjustment in the second half to put more players in the box and avoid being spread out by the Eagles' offense. Kelly said the difference in the first and second half had more to do with his management of the game.

Eagles | Offense might be slowed

Tue, 30 Jul 2013 10:46:07 -0700

The NFL might slow down Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly's fast-paced offense this year based on rule restrictions. "We have to make sure teams understand that they don't control the tempo, our officials do," NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino said. "We're going through our normal ball mechanics, we aren't going to rush (unless) it's in the two-minute drill." Kelly prefers to run a play every 12 seconds, and his team at Oregon ran 82.8 players per game last season.

Eagles | Chip Kelly: no problems so far

Fri, 12 Jul 2013 22:56:06 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly said that the team's veterans haven't shown resistance to the changes that the new head man has instituted. "I think our older players have been the best to be honest with you," Kelly said. He also stated that it doesn't bother him when players speak out, like QB Michael Vick and WR DeSean Jackson did regarding the naming of a starting quarterback. He believes that teams like the San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots have been successful with methods and schemes similar to his.

Fantasy Tip: The real tests are coming, of course, but Kelly's transition to the NFL may not be as drastic as some perceive.

Eagles | Michael Vick could be roster casualty

Tue, 09 Jul 2013 16:11:54 -0700

In the opinion of writer Geoff Mosher, if Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly believes in Nick Foles and the long-term potential of Matt Barkley, Michael Vick could be cut.

Fantasy Tip: Plus, there's always Dennis Dixon to keep around thanks to his experience in this setup at Oregon. It's why the Eagles' QB situation should be avoided until the late backup stages in your draft. Foles could be a decent second option because he gets the ball out of his hands quickly, a must for Kelly's system. Vick is in more jeopardy than many think.

Eagles | DeSean Jackson clarifies QB comments

Sat, 15 Jun 2013 21:24:11 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles WR DeSean Jackson clarified but ultimately stood behind his comments about wanting to have the Eagles' starting quarterback named before training camp.

"I wish I could know, but at the end of the day, that's the coach's decision," Jackson said. "I'm going to play that how it goes. I think we have four great quarterbacks, with [Michael] Vick, [Nick] Foles, [Matt] Barkley and [Dennis] Dixon ... I think throughout the offseason, everybody did everything the right way, everybody practiced hard, everybody was there, accountable, and did the things they were asked to do ... moving forward, we just look forward to knowing who will be [the starter], because that'll definitely help us prepare better going into the season. He's [Chip Kelly] never been a coach of ours; of course, with a new system, he's going to want to know who best fits the system."
