Mon, 21 Nov 2016 19:05:19 -0800

San Francisco 49ers WR DeAndre Smelter remains on the practice squad, and head coach Chip Kelly indicated Monday, Nov. 21, that status isn't likely to change any time soon. "He's been OK, but he hasn't been better than the guys on the active roster," Kelly said.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert named starter in San Fran

Sat, 03 Sep 2016 14:55:15 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert has been named the starting quarterback over Colin Kaepernick, head coach Chip Kelly announced Saturday, Sept. 3.

Fantasy Tip: Even if there was the competition in the beginning, Kaepernick was rarely ever healthy enough for long enough to make this result a surprise. Given Kelly's offensive tempo, Gabbert's mobility and the amount of time San Francisco figures to be trailing in games this season, the former No. 10 overall pick has a decent shot to return low-end QB2 value in fantasy this season.

49ers | QB competition still open in San Francisco

Sat, 27 Aug 2016 16:48:52 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert and QB Colin Kaepernick are still competing for the starting job, according to head coach Chip Kelly.

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert has done little to win the job this preseason, while Kaepernick did more to create news with his pre-game actions last night than he did with his play. The winner is a good bet to carry QB2 value at various points during the season thanks to the volume of plays head coach Chip Kelly's offense usually generate.

49ers | San Fran defense to be aggressive

Mon, 16 May 2016 10:48:35 -0700

San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly said defensive coordinator Jim O'Neil's defense will be aggressive and will get after the quarterback. Kelly also said the defense will rely more on man-to-man schemes from the back-end of the defense. "We're going to get after the quarterback," Kelly said. "It's a quarterback-driven league and you have to disrupt the timing of the quarterback or you're going to get picked apart."

Fri, 15 Jan 2016 09:13:05 -0800

San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly agreed to a four-year, $24 million deal Thursday, Jan. 14, according to a league source. The Philadelphia Eagles owe Kelly around $13 million over the next two years, but that deal will be offset by the one he signs with the 49ers.

49ers | Chip Kelly's pace not too different

Thu, 14 Jan 2016 11:24:48 -0800

San Francisco 49ers new head coach Chip Kelly ran a play every 22.7 seconds with the Philadelphia Eagles this past season, which was the fastest in the league. The 49ers were fifth with a play every 26.5 seconds.

Fantasy Tip: This is a plus for Colin Kaepernick, if the team elects to keep him this offseason. Kaep figures to fit Kelly's offense well, but it will depend on whether they can get the offensive line shored up. Kaep is an intriguing QB2 in fantasy right now.

49ers | Chip Kelly hired in San Fran

Thu, 14 Jan 2016 10:37:45 -0800

Former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly was hired by the San Francisco 49ers Thursday, Jan. 14, as their new head coach. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly takes over a Niners team that is rebuilding and that has plenty of questions on offense. Will Colin Kaepernick be given a second chance? It's totally possible, and with a Kelly-led offense, Kaepernick could be intriguing as a deep sleeper pick in much deeper fantasy leagues next year if they keep him on board. Stay tuned. Kelly should be a big boost to the running game, too, making Carlos Hyde a bargain in the early rounds of drafts next year.

49ers | Niners interested in Chip Kelly

Sun, 03 Jan 2016 09:40:10 -0800

The San Francisco 49ers are reportedly giving strong consideration to hiring former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly. The organization's thinking regarding current head coach Jim Tomsula changed during the middle of last week after Kelly was released from his contract in Philadelphia.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly was a polarizing figure both on and off the field during his years with the Eagles and he is expected to utilize a fast-paced, no-huddle offense wherever he winds up. His potential hiring would have a huge impact on the fantasy value of all San Francisco offensive players.

Eagles | Chip Kelly let go

Tue, 29 Dec 2015 16:19:56 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly was released by the organization Tuesday, Dec. 29. Pat Shurmur will serve as the interim head coach for Week 17.

Fantasy Tip: This is a bit of surprise as the Eagles aren't even letting Kelly finish out the season. Philadelphia has certainly underperformed based on last season, and Kelly has been a polarizing figure on and off the field since taking over in Philly. Who knows what will happen with their roster in the offseason, but Sam Bradford is probably the biggest name to track.

Eagles | Chip Kelly may not return

Tue, 24 Nov 2015 15:35:31 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly may not return as head coach of the Eagles next year, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com. Schefter said momentum and signs seem to be piling up against a Kelly return to Philadelphia.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly has been a polarizing figure since taking over as head coach for the Eagles. He found success with an up-tempo offense last season, but the Eagles have really struggled offensively this year. The likes of Sam Bradford, DeMarco Murray and Jordan Matthews have underwhelmed in 2015, and their fantasy value would certainly be impacted by a Chip Kelly exit.

Eagles | No changes for Philly offense

Mon, 23 Nov 2015 10:55:56 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly said he will not be making changes to the offensive game plan after a lopsided loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 11. Kelly also said there would be no changes to defensive coordinator Bill Davis, whose defense gave up 283 rushing yards and five touchdown passes.

Fantasy Tip: It's unknown if Sam Bradford (shoulder, concussion) or Mark Sanchez will have quarterback duties against the Detroit Lions this Thursday. This offense is currently in disarray, but a nice matchup against Detroit could cure their ills.

Thu, 28 May 2015 11:10:59 -0700

Eagles | Deny Sam Bradford trade rumors

Sat, 02 May 2015 01:35:28 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford was shopped to both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tennessee Titans, according to sources, but Eagles coach Chip Kelly has denied the rumors.

Fantasy Tip: One media member said Bradford was "being shopped like a slice of pizza." Bradford looks like he'll go into the season as the No. 1 QB for Philadelphia, but any contract talks may have Bradford holding the team over a barrel.

Eagles | Eagles getting offers for Sam Bradford

Wed, 11 Mar 2015 10:48:17 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford is still getting interest from other teams, as head coach Chip Kelly said a team offered him a first-round pick for Bradford this morning.

Fantasy Tip: Even if Bradford were to be moved again, he is an extremely risky fantasy football option in 2015 as the Eagles have moved all their best playmakers, not to mention Bradford has to prove he can stay healthy for a full season.

Eagles | Philly won't mortgage future for QB

Wed, 11 Mar 2015 10:47:21 -0700

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is the best quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft, according to Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly, but Kelly said the team will not mortgage the future to trade up to draft Mariota.

Fantasy Tip: While the Eagles may still have interest in Mariota, this is the first time we have heard that the Eagles may not try to make a move up to get him. Wherever Mariota ends up, he should be considered a No. 2 quarterback if he wins the starting job.

Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly, who came from the University of Oregon, is apparently a target for the open coaching job at Florida vacated by Will Muschamp. Eagles | Nolan Carroll getting more playing time

Sat, 01 Nov 2014 05:53:36 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles LB Nolan Carroll has earned more playing time over the past three games. "I think Nolan is really growing into that position, has really kind of found a niche in there, and it's really helped us in some of our matchups," Eagles coach Chip Kelly said. "Because when you've got . . . the running back, it's, 'Who are you going to put on him?' And if you don't put the linebacker on him, 'Who are we going to put on the tight end?' "

Eagles | Not rushing Marcus Smith

Sat, 11 Oct 2014 00:47:39 -0700

Although Philadelphia Eagles LB Marcus Smith wants to see more action on the field, the team will not rush the top draft pick along. "We don't look at a guy and say, 'Hey, he's this, we have to force him in,'" Eagles coach Chip Kelly said. "I think you'd lose the rest of the guys on your team if you say, 'Why are you playing this guy?'"

"My concern is the season," Kelly said. "So, I think if he continues to put himself in positions to play, then our focus with those guys is what's going to help us immediately. We're not building for the future. Our future is right now."

"I thought he was just inconsistent," Kelly said. "I don't know if he was pressing or whatever. But there were some inconsistencies there. Some guys, it's the first time in the bright lights. [They] get the chance to get that out of the system, get a deep breath."

Panthers | Jason Avant clashed with Chip Kelly

Wed, 25 Jun 2014 09:27:04 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Jason Avant said he did not approve of his standing with head coach Chip Kelly last season with the Philadelphia Eagles. Avant said he "mostly ran clear-out routes. ... When it came to certain things, we butted heads sometimes -- route running and route technique. So I knew I didn't fit his system."

Fantasy Tip: Avant wasn't the field-stretching type of slot receiver Kelly likes to use. In Carolina, the vet won't be much more than a bye-week replacement type but will have several big games. Good luck figuring out when to play him.

Eagles | Offseason offensive work looks fast

Fri, 30 May 2014 06:33:55 -0700

The Philadelphia Eagles' organized team activities have displayed their intent to move a lot faster and increase the amount of plays run, in the observation of Nick Fierro. They were quick in moving to the line of scrimmage even before the whistle blew. "We're just running as many reps as we can so we can get it on tape and teach them," head coach Chip Kelly said. "... What we're trying to do is, can we get a maximum number of reps for everybody, because we do have three and four groups, both offensively and defensively? Let's just get a lot of stuff on tape so we can teach off it."

Fantasy Tip: Of course, such an overwhelming pace allowed the offense to dominate last year before they fell apart, for numerous reasons. Of course LeSean McCoy should have another elite year, but the other fantasy-relevant members of this offense in their second year with this system -- Nick Foles, Jeremy Maclin (despite his injury), Riley Cooper, Zach Ertz -- could be in line for huge steps forward with this continuity.
