Arizona Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu was back in the starting lineup in Week 6 against the Washington Redskins after his left knee has continued to improve. He had four tackles, a deflected pass and came up with a fumble recovery in the victory. Because the Redskins use many three- and four-receiver packages, the team had more use for Mathieu. He has played sparingly in a reserve role in past weeks.

Arizona Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu (knee) said he has been running at around 60 to 70 percent at this point and has been able to start cutting while running. Assistant athletic trainer Chad Cook said Mathieu will be able to participate in football activities in the near future. Mathieu hopes to be able to participate in at least individual drills when training camp starts.

Arizona Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu (knee) could be healthy enough to play in Week 1 against the San Diego Chargers on Monday Night Football, according to general manager Steve Keim. Last month, the team believed Mathieu would begin the year on the Physically Unable to Perform list. "He has been a gym rat," Keim said. "He's in here all the time. We have to kick him out of the building and tell him 'Tyrann, go home for a little bit.' He's always in the training room doing his rehab." Mathieu is recovering from torn anterior and lateral collateral ligaments in his left knee.

Mathieu has been able to run and backpedal in a straight line but has not done any cutting or other quick movements at this point.

The Arizona Cardinals could use CB Antonio Cromartie, who is expected to line up opposite CB Patrick Peterson, to cover opposing tight ends next year. Opposing tight ends accounted for 17 of the 29 touchdowns that Cardinals' opponents scored in 2013. Cromartie, however, lined up in the slot in 16 of 127 career games.
