Arizona Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu (knee) said he has been running at around 60 to 70 percent at this point and has been able to start cutting while running. Assistant athletic trainer Chad Cook said Mathieu will be able to participate in football activities in the near future. Mathieu hopes to be able to participate in at least individual drills when training camp starts.

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said he doubts that FS Tyrann Mathieu (knee) or DT Alameda Ta'amu (knee) will be ready for the start of training camp but it will be up to the doctors and trainers to make the decision. Arians said his personal timetable for both players to return is after the team's bye week.

Arizona Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu said he contemplated suicide in 2012. "I want to start a foundation called Second Chance," Mathieu said. "I was given a second chance, so I want to reach out to different groups of people. It would be nice to give that opportunity to others."

Arizona Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu (knee) could be healthy enough to play in Week 1 against the San Diego Chargers on Monday Night Football, according to general manager Steve Keim. Last month, the team believed Mathieu would begin the year on the Physically Unable to Perform list. "He has been a gym rat," Keim said. "He's in here all the time. We have to kick him out of the building and tell him 'Tyrann, go home for a little bit.' He's always in the training room doing his rehab." Mathieu is recovering from torn anterior and lateral collateral ligaments in his left knee.

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said FS Tyrann Mathieu's (knee) rehab is on schedule but believes Mathieu probably will start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Mathieu has been able to run and backpedal in a straight line but has not done any cutting or other quick movements at this point.

The Arizona Cardinals could use CB Antonio Cromartie, who is expected to line up opposite CB Patrick Peterson, to cover opposing tight ends next year. Opposing tight ends accounted for 17 of the 29 touchdowns that Cardinals' opponents scored in 2013. Cromartie, however, lined up in the slot in 16 of 127 career games. CB Jerraud Powers could fill in at nickel and slot until CB Tyrann Mathieu (knee) returns.

Arizona Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu (knee) is no longer wearing a knee brace on his surgically repaired knee. Mathieu's rehab is on schedule, but he knows there is a chance he will miss at least part of training camp.

Without Arizona Cardinals DB Tyrann Mathieu (knee), the team will fill his free safety and nickel corner spots by committee this week with Rashad Johnson, Antoine Cason, Jerraud Powers, Bryan McCann and others. The need to substitute for situations will impact the defense. How much bears watching.

Arizona Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu (knee) underwent successful surgery Friday, Dec. 13, to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament as well as a torn lateral collateral ligament.
