Scouts who have seen Chicago Cubs SP Gerardo Concepcion pitch for Class A Peoria of the Midwest League have come away unimpressed. "They're trying to tell people it's just mechanics that he needs to get straightened out," one scout said. "But I'm telling you, he stinks. If he was in a junior college game you were at, you'd leave." Concepcion is 2-6 with a 7.39 ERA in 12 starts for Peoria.

Updating a previous report, the Chicago Cubs have officially announced the signing of Cuban P Gerardo Concepcion to a five-year deal worth a guaranteed $6 million. He will be sent to minor league camp but will be placed on the 40-man roster.

He had worked out for the Texas Rangers last week, and the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox, Miami Marlins, Philadelphia Phillies, San Francisco Giants, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox and Kansas City Royals were also interested.

Cuban P Gerardo Concepcion worked out for the Texas Rangers in the Dominican Republic Monday, Jan. 23, and Texas is among the favorites to sign him. The Rangers, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox have shown the most interest, but the Miami Marlins, Philadelphia Phillies, San Francisco Giants, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox and Kansas City Royals are also in on him. Concepcion has an offer extended to him and is expected to sign a major league deal in the next two weeks.

Updating a previous item, Cuban P Gerardo Concepcion has been declared a free agent and is open to negotiate with any major league team, according to his agent. The New York Yankees, Texas Rangers, Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox have shown the most interest in the pitcher. He will work out at the Yankees' training facility in the Dominican Republic Thursday, Jan. 19.
