Cardinals | Lance Berkman placed on disabled list

The St. Louis Cardinals have placed 1B Lance Berkman (knee) on the 15-day disabled list with a right knee injury. In a corresponding move, the team has purchased the contract of 1B Matt Adams from Triple-A Memphis.

Fantasy Tip: In case you forgot, Berkman, who just returned from stint of three-plus weeks on the DL for a strained left calf, wants to remind you that he's injury-prone. No word yet on the diagnosis, but the injury the first baseman suffered in Saturday night's affair versus the Los Angeles Dodgers looked like it could keep him out for more than the minimum. It could be the type of thing that requires surgery. Adams (.338/.373/.597 at Triple-A Memphis) is the club's most touted hitting prospect. The 23-year-old slugger is in the midst of his first season at the Class AAA level, and it's uncertain how much he'll play, but NL managers should scoop him up if he's available, and deep mixed players should look in his direction. Matt Carpenter, who filled in for Berkman often earlier this season, may see more time, but the Cards' outfield depth is also depleted, and if Berkman misses extensive time, Adams doesn't figure to sit.

St. Louis Cardinals prospect 1B Matt Adams (elbow) was out of the lineup Sunday, April 22, for Triple-A Memphis. He suffered a hyperextended right elbow Saturday, April 21. The injury is not believed to be serious, according to a club source.

The St. Louis Cardinals considered recalling 1B Matt Adams from Triple-A Memphis Thursday, April 19, but 3B Matt Carpenter's hot start prevented the move because Adams likely wouldn't have played much. Carpenter will start at first base with 1B Lance Berkman (calf) on the disabled list.

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Matt Adams may not be an option to replace 1B Lance Berkman (calf) if he lands on the disabled list. Adams is not on the 40-man roster, and the team is hesitant to put SP Chris Carpenter (shoulder) on the 60-day disabled list to make room for Adams.
