Cardinals | Matt Adams nearing a return

Mon, 24 Aug 2015 18:39:16 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Matt Adams (quadriceps) is nearing a return. Manager Mike Matheny said Monday, Aug. 24, that he expects Adams back "September 1st-ish". He continues to rehab with the team's Class A Palm Beach affiliate.

Fantasy Tip: Adams ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) should be avoided in FantasyScore until he can officially return and knock off the rust in a game or two.

Cardinals | Matt Adams takes batting practice

Wed, 19 Aug 2015 17:21:46 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Matt Adams (quadriceps) took batting practice for the first time since undergoing surgery to repair a tear in his right quadriceps Wednesday, Aug. 19. He also did extensive running in the outfield.

Fantasy Tip: Adams is scheduled to work out at the club's facility in Jupiter, Fla., in preparation for a minor league rehab assignment. He appears to be about one month away from returning to action, so he would be nothing more than a desperation stash in most fantasy formats at this point.

Cardinals | Matt Adams to continue rehab

Mon, 17 Aug 2015 19:01:19 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Matt Adams (quadriceps) is expected to head to Jupiter, Fla. to continue his rehab from a strained right quadriceps. He increased his running on the field Monday, Aug. 17. He has had no setbacks as he continues to make steps toward a return.

Fantasy Tip: It's uncertain when Adams will be able to return, but he is making strides and appears to be close. Wait to see him officially return and play a couple of games to knock off the rust before trusting him again in FantasyScore.

Cardinals | Matt Adams progressing well

Wed, 12 Aug 2015 13:19:18 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Matt Adams (quadriceps) has resumed taking controlled swings and is not too far away from taking outdoor batting practice. Adams still is not running at full speed, though. The Cardinals are hopeful Adams can begin a rehab assignment before the minor league season ends with a return to St. Louis in mid-September.

Fantasy Tip: Mid-September seems like a best-case scenario, so Adams should be viewed as nothing more than a desperation stash at this point. In the majority of leagues, he likely isn't worth stashing, either. Continue to check back for updates, but don't be surprised if Adams' fantasy return in September is more of a ripple than a splash.

Cardinals | Matt Adams to 60-day DL

Mon, 08 Jun 2015 09:12:05 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Matt Adams (quadriceps) was moved to the 60-day disabled list over the weekend.

Fantasy Tip: Adams is expected to miss at least four months, so he's unlikely to have any fantasy impact for the rest of the 2015 season. Mark Reynolds ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) will continue to fill in for the foreseeable future at first base, but aside from an occasional power display, he doesn't do a lot for fantasy teams.

Cardinals | Xavier Scruggs an option at first base?

Fri, 29 May 2015 19:00:15 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Xavier Scruggs could be an option at first base if the team decides to call up a player from Class AAA to fill in for 1B Matt Adams (quadriceps), general manager John Mozeliak said Friday, May 29.

Fantasy Tip: Scruggs only has 16 at-bats under his belts in the majors, but he has shown decent power potential at lower levels. If he does end up being called up, he could make an intriguing sleeper at FantasyScore.

Cardinals | Cardinals not rushing Stephen Piscotty

Fri, 29 May 2015 18:53:34 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 3B Stephen Piscotty will not rushed to play first base to fill in for 1B Matt Adams (quadriceps), general manager John Mozeliak said Friday, May 29. "Obviously, he played third base in college and was drafted as a third baseman, so I think the transition for him would be pretty easy," Mozeliak said. "But again, I don't feel like we're desperate for coverage at first. We have plenty of time."

Fantasy Tip: Unless you play in an exceptionally deep NL-only league, it sounds like there is no reason to rush out and add Piscotty in the wake of Adams' injury.

Cardinals | Matt Adams out at least four months

Fri, 29 May 2015 15:14:41 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Matt Adams (quadriceps) underwent surgery Friday, May 29. The surgeon found a complete tear of the quadriceps muscle, which will prolong the recovery timetable. Adams is expected to miss at least four months.

Fantasy Tip: Until there is a personnel change, Mark Reynolds ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) projects to receive the majority of starts at first base. He is a feast or famine hitter, and should be viewed as a risky FantasyScore play going forward. Adams can be stashed, but it is ill-advised to expect any meaningful production from him in 2015. At best he receives a few at-bats at the end of the season.

Cardinals | Matt Holliday won't play 1B

Fri, 29 May 2015 08:08:12 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday won't shift to first base with 1B Matt Adams (quadriceps) out, according to manager Mike Matheny. "That's a pretty big shift for a guy who's spent his whole career out there and bring him in to the infield," Matheny said. "There's a lot that goes on. It's not like you just throw anybody there. You've got to have some work to make that happen."

Fantasy Tip: It looks like Mark Reynolds ($2,700, 5.4% of your cap) will see the lion's share of time at first for the time being. He has a ton of power but hits at an awful rate. He's a matchup play on FantasyScore.

Cardinals | Matt Adams to undergo surgery

Wed, 27 May 2015 21:07:25 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Matt Adams (quadriceps) is scheduled to undergo surgery Friday, May 29, to repair his torn quadriceps.

Fantasy Tip: Adams ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) could miss the rest of the season because of his injury. Mark Reynolds ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) likely will see most of the playing time and could be a cheaper option for owners on FantasyScore to consider.
