The Arizona Republic reports free agent LB Lester Towns (Panthers) worked out for the Arizona Cardinals Thursday, Aug. 18. Because of LB Gerald Hayes' (knee) knee injury, which will keep him out at least eight weeks, the Cardinals are looking for a linebacker to add to the roster.

NFL | Towns Trying to get Back in the NFL

Tom Sorensen, of the Charlotte Observer, reports former Carolina Panthers LB Lester Towns is trying to work his way back into the NFL. Last season was Town's first away from football since he began playing in Los Angeles at the age of 10. Towns, who is 6-1 and 244 pounds, looks fit, even fitter than he did as a Panther, chest broad and waist lean. He is working out daily under the direction of former NFL CB Leonard Wheeler. Towns has worked with Wheeler every Tuesday and Thursday for 18 weeks, and works on his own four other days. He says he is faster than he has ever been. He's hoping a team will call to have him come to training camp.

"Itís been a tough adjustment," Towns said Wednesday after the teamís coaching sessions. Heís handling the demotion like a professional, staying positive and upbeat. Contractually, he belongs to the Panthers this season as part of the final year of a three-year contract. His low base salary, $375,000, may help him keep his roster spot.

The Charlotte Observer reports the Carolina Panthers have moved second-year LB Dan Morgan to middle linebacker. He played outside linebacker as a rookie last season. Morgan was excited about the move, saying he feels it's his natural position. Morgan will replace Lester Towns, who lead the team with 89 tackles last year. Towns will now be considered for other defensive roles, according to defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio.
