Cardinals | Kevin Siegrist adding curveball

Fri, 20 May 2016 15:57:54 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Kevin Siegrist threw consecutive curveballs to strike out Colorado Rockies OF Carlos Gonzalez Thursday, May 19. He had only thrown the pitch three times to that point in the season. Siegrist experimented with a curveball during spring training to add to his fastball-changeup mix.

"Loved it," manager Mike Matheny said of the sequence. "I don't know if the camera caught us over here, but I jumped up and yelled and whistled as soon as the first one happened. I was happy to see it. That should have been very affirming to him when he sees one of the best left-handed hitters in the league approach that like he did."

Fantasy Tip: Dating back to the beginning of last season, Siegrist has a 2.26 ERA and 1.10 WHIP with 11 wins, seven saves and 115 strikeouts over 91 2/3 innings. Those numbers make him a viable option in deep mixed leagues, and adding another pitch to keep hitters off balance does nothing but increase the likelihood of him sustaining his dominance.

Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal shaky Thursday

Fri, 13 May 2016 07:42:03 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Trevor Rosenthal walked the bases loaded on 14 pitches in a save situation and was removed from the game in favor of RP Kevin Siegrist against the Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim Thursday, May 12. Rosenthal was pitching on back-to-back days for the first time this year. "He's got good stuff and needs to trust it," manager Mike Matheny said of Rosenthal. "You're going to have those days and you're going to have to figure it out, or someone is going to have to bail you out, which is exactly what happened today."

Fantasy Tip: Rosenthal still has an elite strikeout rate, fanning 14.7 hitters per nine innings, but spotty control has always been his weakness. He's walking an alarming 7.4 hitters per nine this year. However, there remains plenty of rope for him in the ninth, and no change is in the immediate future. Continue trotting Rosenthal out there on a daily basis.

Cardinals | Kevin Siegrist adds new pitch

Wed, 17 Feb 2016 06:28:25 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals RP Kevin Siegrist has added a curveball to his repertoire, which will replace his slider as his breaking pitch. Siegrist has sought tips from SPs Adam Wainwright and Tyler Lyons, and he plans to fine-tune the pitch in camp. "Waino told me to really focus on the shape of the pitch," Siegrist said. "That actually really helped me. Maybe that's why I never had a really good breaking pitch, because I never could understand the thought process of how you throw one. This year, with the grip I have, I don't really have to think about manipulating the ball. I can just throw it."

Fantasy Tip: Siegrist was one of the top non-closers in fantasy last season with seven wins, six saves, a 2.17 ERA and 90 K's in 74 2/3 innings. Adding a curveball to his fastball-changeup mix should only make him more difficult to hit, and he'll be a popular reliever in fantasy drafts again.

Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal was unavailable

Wed, 23 Sep 2015 14:40:48 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Trevor Rosenthal was not unavailable in a save situation against the Cincinnati Reds Tuesday, Sept. 22, and neither was RP Jonathan Broxton. The Cardinals went with RP Kevin Siegrist to lock the game down in the eighth and RP Steve Cishek recorded the save. It was the 95th save of Cishek's career, and he became the sixth Cardinals reliever to record a save in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Rosenthal has been one of the more consistent closers in the league this year. He has 47 saves, a 1.49 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 10.9 strikeouts per nine innings. Continue to run with Rosenthal as your closer to finish out the season.

Cardinals | Kevin Siegrist picks up save

Sun, 05 Jul 2015 18:53:15 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Kevin Siegrist threw a perfect ninth inning against the San Diego Padres Sunday, July 5, to pick up his fourth save in six chances. RP Trevor Rosenthal was unavailable to close after having appeared in three straight games.

Fantasy Tip: Siegrist has been impressive in a setup role, posting a 1.45 ERA and striking out 48 in 37 1/3 innings. He should already be owned in leagues that count holds as a category, and he is a must-add player in all formats if Rosenthal were to miss time for any reason.

Cardinals | Kevin Siegrist fills in again

Tue, 16 Jun 2015 20:48:42 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Kevin Siegrist filled in for RP Trevor Rosenthal (biceps) for the second time in two days Tuesday, June 16, against the Minnesota Twins.

Fantasy Tip: Siegrist is worth picking up as a handcuff for Rosenthal owners in NL-only fantasy leagues, or if Rosenthal should ever be forced to the 15-day disabled list.

Cardinals | Kevin Siegrist, John Gast returning from injuries

Tue, 17 Feb 2015 11:37:37 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals RPs Kevin Siegrist (hand, neck, forearm) and John Gast (shoulder) lacked explosiveness on their pitches last year after dealing with various injuries. Siegrist dealt with muscle tears in his hand, nerve pain in his neck and forearm irritation, but he said he's healthy after resting in the offseason. Gast underwent shoulder surgery that included rotator-cuff cleanup. Siegrist could start the year at Class AAA if he's not ready. Both threw bullpen sessions Tuesday, Feb. 17, and felt much better compared to last season.

He said the exam revealed muscle tears in his hand and inflammation throughout his forearm. Siegrist plans to rehab, strengthen and pitch during the National League Division Series, with the hope he will be available later in the month, if needed.
