Fri, 03 May 2013 14:36:51 -0700 St. Louis Cardinals RP Jason Motte (elbow) didn't feel comfortable throwing Friday, May 3, so he will undergo Tommy John surgery Monday, May 6. Motte will miss the rest of the season. Fantasy Tip: Signs had been pointing this way for some time now. Edward Mujica has taken the closer's job and run with it since Mitchell Boggs struggled in the role to start the season. Boggs was sent to the minors today. In the long term, Trevor Rosenthal may be the best bet, but as long as Mujica is getting the job done, Rosenthal will be resigned to the setup role, for now. Mujica and Rosenthal should both be owned in all formats. Carlos Martinez was brought up to take Boggs' spot in the bullpen, but he isn't expected to enter the saves picture anytime soon.
Mon, 29 Apr 2013 13:50:36 -0700 St. Louis Cardinals RP Jason Motte (elbow) said he felt fine after throwing for the second straight day Sunday, April 28. "I woke up this morning and didn't take a step back," Motte said Sunday. "It felt good. If it didn't feel good I don't think we'd have moved forward." The Cardinals said earlier this month that if Motte hadn't improved by the beginning of May he would likely have season-ending reconstructive surgery. Motte plans to play catch again Monday, April 29, unless he had a setback. "If it's June and I'm not chucking, we need to do something," Motte said. Fantasy Tip: This is obviously great news for Motte owners, but he's not in the clear yet by any stretch of the imagination. One little setback could make the difference in having to undergo season-ending surgery. Edward Mujica is perfect in four save chances and will likely continue to receive save chances with Motte out. Trevor Rosenthal lurks in the background for saves if Mujica falters.
Tue, 23 Apr 2013 12:07:16 -0700 St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny wants to use RP Trevor Rosenthal as the eighth-inning setup man, and Rosenthal allowed two hits in two-thirds of an inning before needing RP Edward Mujica to bail him out Monday, April 22. Matheny also said that he'd consider using Rosenthal in the ninth inning in a save situation. "He's kind of a Catch-22. There are so many guys who have come into this organization with the great arms who don't know how to pitch," Matheny said. "We're constantly trying to get them not to be the dead-brain heavers. And then a guy like Trevor who has the kind of fastball where he could be a dead-brain heaver and do OK. It's a balance of how to use the secondary pitches. Those other pitches make his fastball better." Eleven of Rosenthal's 12 fastballs reached 99 mph or higher Thursday, but he's "still trying to get comfortable" in a relief role. Fantasy Tip: Mitchell Boggs is clearly the third option for saves now in St. Louis, with Mujica having closed out the last two and Rosenthal an option, too. Rosenthal is still young, remember, and he's working on how to consistently get major league hitters out and improve his secondary pitches. Mujica is the lead dog for now, but Rosenthal remains the better long-term saves option.
Fri, 19 Apr 2013 11:20:30 -0700 St. Louis Cardinals RP Edward Mujica got himself into a first-and-third jam with nobody out against the Philadelphia Phillies Thursday, April 18, before retiring three hitters in a row for his first save of the season. Fantasy Tip: Mike Matheny chose to go with Mujica in the ninth over Mitchell Boggs, who has blown two of his four save chances to start the year. Mujica was shaky, however, but he got the job done, meaning Matheny will likely go to him again if another save situation arises. This isn't Mujica's job completely yet, though; if he falters, Matheny could go back to Boggs or try out Trevor Rosenthal, who has been struggling himself. Mujica is the best option to own at the moment, however, and he could run away with the job if he continues to get the job done.
Thu, 18 Apr 2013 10:28:18 -0700 St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak believes the bullpen will be a strength eventually, but they've had their struggles to open the season, mainly with RP Mitchell Boggs. Mozeliak didn't rule out Boggs returning to the main closer role and running with it, however, he mentioned RP Edward Mujica and his veteran presence in the backend of the bullpen as a guy that could also settle into the role. Mozeliak said RP Trevor Rosenthal has a dynamic arm but isn't getting the results he wants, so he'll have to make some adjustments. The GM doesn't prefer a set closer or a closer-by-committee, he just wants to see the team win any way possible. Mozeliak said the team won't label anybody as the set closer for the time being, though. Fantasy Tip: All three relievers - Boggs, Mujica and Rosenthal - should be owned in all leagues. There's a good chance Mujica or Rosenthal get the next shot at a save situation. Boggs owners should hang on, but he probably doesn't have as much of a shot to regain the gig outright as Mujica or Rosenthal do.
Tue, 16 Apr 2013 12:56:52 -0700 St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny and pitching coach Derek Lilliquist announced a "mild adjustment" on how they will handle ninth-inning duties Monday, April 15. RP Mitchell Boggs won't necessarily be out as the closer, but RP Edward Mujica is likely to see a save chance in the next few days. RP Trevor Rosenthal could, as well. Boggs pitched a scoreless ninth inning Monday, April 15, but it wasn't a save situation. "The relievers know we can't keep going along the same route. We've got to do figure out how to make the adjustments," Matheny said. Matheny basically acknowledged that the team will go with a closer-by-committee without saying those exact words. Fantasy Tip: Boggs, Rosenthal and Mujica should all be owned. While Matheny is still listing Boggs as part of this so-called committee, he essentially lost the gig as closer, so it's hard to see him getting a huge share of this timeshare. Mujica could stick if he's successful in his early opportunities, but Rosenthal might be the best long-term bet if Jason Motte (forearm) is out for the season.
Mon, 15 Apr 2013 11:02:48 -0700 The St. Louis Cardinals bullpen blew another late lead against the Milwaukee Brewers Sunday, April 14, with RP Trevor Rosenthal allowing a two-run home run in the eighth and RP Mitchell Boggs blowing the save chance in the ninth inning. RP Edward Mujica came to the rescue in the ninth inning with the game tied, and he could be an alternative to saves if manager Mike Matheny wants to go away from Boggs. Pitching coach Derek Lilliquist said the club has "flexibility in whatever we want to do." Matheny hasn't been ready to make snap decisions on Boggs yet, who is 2-for-4 in save chances, but he acknowledged that Mujica has been getting the job done in key situations. "(Boggs) is going to keep grinding through it, grinding through it. And we'll see what he's made of," Lilliquist said. Fantasy Tip: It looks like Matheny and the Cardinals are sticking with Boggs, at least for a little while longer. However, Mujica, not Rosenthal, might now be next in line for saves if Boggs continues to struggle. If you're seeking saves, Mujica is worth a look, at least in NL-only leagues for the time being.

It was the second time Rosenthal could not hold a lead this year. Fantasy Tip: While Rosenthal could not hold the lead, he is worth owning in deeper leagues with the injury to Jason Motte.
