Lions | Kyle Vanden Bosch likely to be cap casualty

Mon, 04 Feb 2013 12:12:05 -0800

Detroit Lions DE Kyle Vanden Bosch is likely to be a salary cap casualty this offseason. OG Rob Sims is the only secure starter on the offensive line, and OT Gosder Cherilus will become a free agent. OT Jeff Backus has a year left on his contract, but the team isn't rushing to make a decision on him. OG Riley Reiff will start somewhere in 2013. OT Jason Fox, if he's re-signed, should see a good shot to play at tackle next season.

Detroit Lions WR Titus Young, who was sent home from the team's facility Monday, Nov. 19, has now been sent home twice in the past six months due to his immaturity. He angered receivers coach Shawn Jefferson and the coaching staff in Week 11 late in the fourth quarter. He incorrectly lined up in the slot on a second-down play with the team down 21-20. TE Tony Scheffler was the outside receiver to his left. OT Riley Reiff looked up and yelled to Young to get into the correct position, but was ignored. Scheffler tried to get back into the slot, but Young shook him off. As a result of the confusion, OT Gosder Cherilus was whistled for a false start.

Thu, 26 Jul 2012 07:49:39 -0700

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said OT Riley Reiff must earn his playing time during the course of training camp and the preseason regardless of his draft status. "He brings a lot of credentials to the table," Schwartz said. "He's smart, he's big, he's a hard worker. But where he plays and how soon he plays will depend on nothing but how he does over these 35 days of training camp, how he plays in these preseason games. It's not going to be where we drafted him, how much money he makes, his signing bonus, or the color of his t-shirt. It's going to be how he does in those practices."

Fri, 27 Apr 2012 09:30:13 -0700

Detroit Lions rookie OT Riley Reiff, the team's first-round draft pick, should be a cornerstone on the offensive line for years to come. He will be given every opportunity to succeed in his rookie season and is expected to come in to compete immediately. He may not, however, replace LT Jeff Backus right away. The selection of Reiff wasn't a knock against Backus, but the reality is their veteran tackle is getting older and they need to protect QB Matthew Stafford long term.

NFL | Not a lot of O-line help in 2012 NFL Draft?

Fri, 17 Feb 2012 22:07:41 -0800

Southern California OT Matt Kalil is expected to fly off the board in the 2012 NFL Draft rather quickly in the first round, but there are plenty of questions at the position after that. Over the past five years, an average of 6.4 offensive linemen have gone in the first round.

However, the question is whether guys like Stanford OT Jonathan Martin or Iowa OT Riley Reiff are closer to the top of bottom of the first round. "I don't think there's a second or third tackle where you say, 'I gotta have this guy in the first round,'" an AFC personnel director said. "Martin might be comparable to someone you see in the second round, and there are differing opinions on the guards, particularly (Stanford OG David DeCastro). The kid from Midwestern State (OG Amini Silatolu) is more talented, but are you comfortable with a JUCO guy who wound up there? There are lots of questions like that."
