Kansas City Chiefs DT Dontari Poe has not received a ton of reps early in training camp. Head coach Romeo Crennel said Poe has a lot to work on if he wants to get on the field more. "He needs to work on technique, he needs to work on understanding the system, he needs to get the calls correct all the time. He's got a ways to go," Crennel said.

Kansas City Chiefs DL Dontari Poe acknowledged the difficulty of adjusting to the NFL game. "It's all different," Poe said Wednesday, Aug. 8. "The technique of it, there's nothing the same about the college level. The only thing the same is that it's football. As far as the speed level and the strength and all that, you've got to learn it all over again." Poe remains behind DL Anthony Toribio at the nose tackle position on the depth chart, and Poe enters the lineup on obvious passing downs when the Chiefs use their nickel defense.

Kansas City Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli defended his selection of DL Dontari Poe in the NFL Draft by saying he is more than a workout warrior. Pioli likes Poe's upside as a player. "All these people say he's a workout warrior and that means he can't play," Pioli said. "With our eyes, we think he's a player with upside, but we don't think he's a project."

Twenty NFL Draft evaluators named North Carolina DE Quinton Coples as the most likely defensive end bust in this year's draft class. "His interviews are so delusional in terms of him thinking he's one way and everybody else saying that he's another," one personnel man said. "If he doesn't have it in him, people will be waiting for something that's not going to happen." Coples led with 5 1/2 votes, while Memphis DT Dontari Poe and Penn State DT Devon Still each received 3 1/2 votes. "Love Poe's ability," one scout said. "Don't like the way he plays. Pretty good kid. Quiet. Humble. Country. Pretty well-spoken. But he doesn't know what he doesn't know. If you tell him that he doesn't play hard, he's like,'Really?'" Memphis DL Dontari Poe has arguably been the star of the NFL Scouting Combine with his size, strength and speed. Poe ran an unofficial time of 4.87 seconds in the 40-yard dash and 1.7 seconds in the ten-yard split. Many 3-4 teams will see Poe as a nose tackle, and that's probably where he will get drafted. However, his workout shows that Poe could be moved around in a variety of defensive line positions on a 3-4 or 4-3 defense.
