Broncos | Montee Ball to miss Week 8

Wed, 22 Oct 2014 12:45:21 -0700

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball (groin) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 22, and has been ruled out for Week 8.

Fantasy Tip: Ronnie Hillman probably will continue to receive most of the work at running back while Ball is out, but Juwan Thompson will also receive some playing time. Hillman costs $5,500 on FantasyScore and is a solid starting option for owners.

Broncos | Montee Ball out again Tuesday

Tue, 21 Oct 2014 14:31:22 -0700

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball (groin) was not at practice for the second straight day Tuesday, Oct. 21.

Fantasy Tip: Ball won't be available on the short week against the San Diego Chargers. Ronnie Hillman has really stepped up in his absence. He's still relatively cheap enough at FantasyScore ($5,500; 11.0% of cap) to turn a profit.

Broncos | Montee Ball remains out

Mon, 20 Oct 2014 13:55:01 -0700

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball (groin) did not practice again Monday, Oct. 20. The Broncos didn't actually practice, so Ball's designation is an estimation.

Fantasy Tip: Ball is likely at least another week away from being able to return to the team. The rise of Ronnie Hillman in his absence, though, means Ball may not have much of a role when he returns. You shouldn't drop him in standard leagues, but be prepared for him to be no more than a flex option in the second half.

Broncos | Montee Ball unlikely to regain role

Sat, 18 Oct 2014 13:38:25 -0700

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball (groin) will have a difficult time regaining the featured-back role this season after his injury. It's beat writer Mike Klis' opinion that Ball never fully recovered from his appendectomy, which could have been a precursor to his groin injury.

Fantasy Tip: Ronnie Hillman ($5,000; 10% of your cap) appears to have been a waiver-wire gem and makes a great RB2 on FantasyScore this week. Juwan Thompson ($3,000; 6%) is expected to be involved, but he probably won't be much of a factor this week.

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball (groin) missed his second straight practice this week Thursday, Oct. 16.

Broncos | Montee Ball a no-show at practice

Wed, 15 Oct 2014 15:50:02 -0700

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball (groin) did not take part in practice Wednesday, Oct. 15.

Fantasy Tip: Ball is not expected to play again in Week 7 against the San Francisco 49ers Sunday night. Ronnie Hillman ($5,000; 10.0% of cap) remains the lead back in Ball's absence, but he'll face a stiff run defense in the Niners this weekend. He could wind up being a bust after a 100-yard rushing effort last week.

Broncos | Committee to replace Montee Ball?

Sat, 11 Oct 2014 17:43:24 -0700

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman, RB C.J. Anderson and RB Juwan Thompson (knee) will all be leaned on while RB Montee Ball (groin) is out with a groin injury, according to head coach John Fox. Anderson said he feels that the back that has the hot hand will receive a majority of the carries.

Fantasy Tip: All three backs have a tough matchup in Week 6 with the Broncos facing the sixth-ranked rush defense of the New York Jets. Fantasy owners may be better served waiting to see how the carries are divided Sunday and then trying to find value in the Denver backfield in the coming weeks.

Fri, 10 Oct 2014 14:43:57 -0700

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball (groin) did not participate in practice Friday, Oct. 10, and has been ruled out for Week 6.

Fantasy Tip: Ball probably will miss another week or two because of his groin injury. Ronnie Hillman and Juwan Thompson are expected to handle the running back duties. Hillman costs $5,000 on FantasyScore and probably is the better option for fantasy owners.

Broncos | Ronnie Hillman the guy

Thu, 09 Oct 2014 07:40:17 -0700

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman will serve as the lead running back in RB Montee Ball's (groin) absence. "Ronnie has played at different times, in different amounts, but when you're the starting back and running out there in pregame warm-ups as a starting back, it's a different hat that you wear," said QB Peyton Manning. "There's no question he has a burst that is pretty unique when he gets the ball in his hands. It's our job to give him space."

Fantasy Tip: This was all but confirmed, but there was also word that he would be in a timeshare. Hillman ($4,000; 8% of your cap) has a tough matchup against the New York Jets this week, and C.J. Anderson and Juwan Thompson should see time. However, Hillman is a great flex option on FantasyScore.

Broncos | Montee Ball sits out Wednesday

Wed, 08 Oct 2014 13:18:53 -0700

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball (groin) did not practice Wednesday, Oct. 8.

Fantasy Tip: Ball will miss up to three games with a fairly serious groin injury. You can forget about him at FantasyScore for at least a few weeks. Ronnie Hillman ($5,000) should see the majority of touches against the New York Jets, and is a smart play.

Broncos | Montee Ball likely out three games

Tue, 07 Oct 2014 07:08:13 -0700

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball (groin) is likely to miss the next three games because the team plays those three games in a span of 12 days.

Fantasy Tip: Ronnie Hillman ($5,000; 10% of your cap) has a tough matchup against the New York Jets this week, but he's a decent flex option in this offense.

Broncos | Montee Ball to miss a few weeks

Mon, 06 Oct 2014 13:40:36 -0700

Updating previous reports, Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball (groin) is expected to miss a couple weeks because of the groin injury he suffered in Week 5, but will not need to undergo surgery, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Ronnie Hillman probably will receive most of the carries while Ball is out and has the chance to be a No. 2 running back for owners. C.J. Anderson and Juwan Thompson could also receive some carries but likely will not be more than flex options in deeper leagues.

Broncos | Montee Ball has major injury?

Mon, 06 Oct 2014 13:04:30 -0700

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball (groin) is expected to be out for a significant amount of time after suffering a groin injury in the team's Week 5 game, according to a team source. In his absence, RB Ronnie Hillman will step into the lead running back role, with RBs Juwan Thompson and C.J. Anderson also seeing action.

Fantasy Tip: For those that own Ball, be prepared to go without him for a while. In the meantime, run to the waiver wire and immediately add Hillman, who looked much better than Ball has all year in Sunday's win. Thompson is worth a look, too, if the team continues to use him in goal-line situations.

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball (groin) could miss multiple weeks due to a groin injury, according to an NFL source. He'll undergo an MRI Monday, Oct. 6.

Broncos | Montee Ball working on run game

Mon, 22 Sep 2014 19:33:52 -0700

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball is averaging 3.4 yards per carry this season, and the team is averaging almost 42 fewer rushing yards per game than a year ago. Ball said Monday, Sept. 22, that the team will focus on fixing the run game heading into the bye week. "Right now, we need a lot of work on it," Ball said. "It starts up front, starts with the tight ends, and with the running backs too. Collectively, we all need to sit down and focus on it, and I believe we will."

Fantasy Tip: Peyton Manning and the Denver passing attack have remained stout this season so it seems like only a matter of time before Ball starts to put up some big numbers. However, the Broncos return to action in Week 5 against an Arizona team that has stuffed the run this season so any improvements that Ball and company make in the off week may not pay immediate dividends.

Broncos | Montee Ball fighting for yards

Thu, 11 Sep 2014 08:24:52 -0700

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball rushed for 69 yards in the team's Week 1 game, but 55 of those yards came after contact.

Fantasy Tip: Ball is a part of an explosive offense and will continue to get the chance to post solid stats each week. Ball should be in the starting lineup in most leagues because of his matchup and could be a fine addition on FantasyScore at $7,800.

Broncos | Montee Ball improving

Wed, 20 Aug 2014 19:27:37 -0700

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball (appendix) continues to do more work in practice each day, but most of his work continues to be outside of the team structure. However, he was wearing pads and working individually with QB Peyton Manning Wednesday, Aug. 20, and his workload is scheduled to increase. Ball might be ready to get some action in the preseason finale.

Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners should be cautiously optimistic that Ball will be available for Week 1, but be sure to have plenty of depth on hand in case he isn't ready to answer the bell for the opener. Ronnie Hillman would be a great play in Week 1 if Ball is out or suffers some sort of setback.

Tue, 19 Aug 2014 13:23:28 -0700

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball (appendix) has received full medical clearance, but did not participate in team drills Tuesday, Aug. 19.

Fantasy Tip: Even if Ball isn't ready for full contact yet, it's still promising that he's been medically cleared. He should be drafted between the late-first and middle-second rounds.

Tue, 19 Aug 2014 10:20:50 -0700

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball (appendix) participated in drills with a helmet on Tuesday, Aug. 19.

Fantasy Tip: Another sign of progress for Ball, who will likely be off most draft boards in the first two rounds. The team will likely be cautious with working Ball back into a regular practice schedule.

Sun, 17 Aug 2014 20:51:14 -0700

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball (appendix) is making good progress and said there is a chance he could return to practice at some point this week.

Fantasy Tip: The team could ease Ball back into practice since the regular season does not start for a few weeks. Ball will be the team's starting running back this season and probably will be selected in the first two rounds of most fantasy leagues.

Broncos | Montee Ball able to do some jogging

Thu, 14 Aug 2014 11:00:48 -0700

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball (appendix) was doing some jogging during practice Thursday, Aug. 14.

Fantasy Tip: Ball is coming back from an appendectomy and still has a few weeks to recover from the surgery. Ball should be able to play most, if not all, of the regular season and probably will be taken in the first two rounds of most drafts. He should be considered a risky play in Week 1 because of the injury.

Broncos | Montee Ball to have appendectomy

Mon, 04 Aug 2014 11:06:20 -0700

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball (appendix) will undergo an appendectomy Monday, Aug. 4, but is expected to be ready for the team's regular season opener against Indianapolis, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: This could certainly have a negative effect on Ball's outlook heading into the season. This is a situation to keep tabs on throughout the preseason. As long as Ball gets healthy and is ready to go against the Colts, he still has RB1 potential in all scoring formats. If Ball were to miss more time than expected, C.J. Anderson would have increased value.

Broncos | Juwan Thompson moves up depth chart

Fri, 01 Aug 2014 22:21:13 -0700

Denver Broncos RB Juwan Thompson has moved to the front of the undrafted rookie running back pool and into the No. 4 spot on the depth chart behind RBs Montee Ball, Ronnie Hillman and C.J. Anderson. His ability in the passing game might give him a leg up in the race with RBs Kapri Bibbs and Brennan Clay.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson was a solid tailback on an overachieving Duke team in 2014 for head coach David Cutcliffe, who is very familiar with QB Peyton Manning. However, even if Thompson were able to hang on and win the No. 4 job, he would still need an injury or two to gain fantasy relevance.

Broncos | Looking to have more efficient running game

Mon, 07 Jul 2014 11:17:35 -0700

The Denver Broncos will still be a passing team but want to have a more efficient running game since they will be facing more defensive subpackages during games. "We're always going to try to get the best look, to do the best thing in each situation for the offense to be successful," offensive coordinator Adam Gase said. "The more things we can do, the more options we have. We want to be able to execute the plays we want in those situations. If that's throwing, that's throwing the ball, if it's running, then we want that available, too." A better running game will also help QB Peyton Manning's play-action passing.

Fantasy Tip: Montee Ball is entering this upcoming season as the starter and should have space to run with opponents worrying about the teams running game. Ball should be a starter in every league and likely will be selected in the first two or three rounds.

Broncos | Montee Ball viewed as veteran among RB group

Thu, 12 Jun 2014 10:54:54 -0700

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball, who leads the rest of the team's rushers with 559 career rushing yards from his rookie season, is looked at as a veteran on the staff, according to head coach John Fox. Despite his lack of experience, Ball is penciled in as the starting running back this year. The coaching staff is also very confident in what they have in Ball's young backups in RBs Ronnie Hillman, C.J. Anderson and Jerodis Williams. RB Brennan Clay's speed and quick learning of the playbook has him alongside Anderson for third-string repetitions.

Broncos | Sticking with young running backs

Tue, 10 Jun 2014 09:33:15 -0700

The Denver Broncos will stick with RBs Montee Ball and Ronnie Hillman for now, according to general manager John Elway.

Fantasy Tip: It wouldn't be surprising to see the team add a veteran for training camp, or even after the preseason once another club cuts a veteran, but Elway wants the backfield to run through its youngsters. However, he didn't mention potential sleeper C.J. Anderson, either, and he's still in the mix. Ball is the clear leader and will get first-round consideration, while Hillman is more of an RB4 at this point.

Broncos | OC sees improvement from Montee Ball

Mon, 02 Jun 2014 11:28:19 -0700

Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase said he has been happy with the improvements RB Montee Ball has made and is looking forward to what he can do during the 2014 season. "He made big strides," Gase said. "He'd probably be the one guy who made the most improvement. And to see him make the next jump in his second year, we're looking forward to that. We do have a lot of confidence in him. He brings that full package of a good running back. Running the ball, catching the ball out of the backfield, and protecting."

Fantasy Tip: It appears the team will be entering this upcoming season with Ball as their main running back, which will make Ball a solid fantasy contributor. Ball should be a starting running back in all leagues and likely will be selected in one of the early rounds during drafts.

Mon, 02 Jun 2014 11:18:40 -0700

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball indicated it took some time for him to begin anticipating QB Peyton Manning's audibles last season, which helped him improve his blitz pickup. "I started playing better then," Ball said. "I wish that it had happened earlier. I always tell myself, imagine what it would have been like had I begun like this."

Broncos | Montee Ball the starter, competition for No. 2

Fri, 30 May 2014 05:55:19 -0700

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball has the starting job, and the competition for the backfield is with the No. 2 spot, according to offensive coordinator Adam Gase.

Fantasy Tip: Ronnie Hillman and C.J. Anderson are the main contenders. The bruising Anderson would seem to hold up better, but the slasher Hillman has more experience. It seems as if situational work would cancel them out as long as Ball is healthy and effective.

Dolphins | Agree to terms with Knowshon Moreno

Thu, 27 Mar 2014 12:10:25 -0700

The Miami Dolphins agreed to terms with RB Knowshon Moreno (Broncos) on a one-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Moreno will likely see significant regression this year, and is likely to split time with Lamar Miller in the backfield. He could even see third-down duty. Moreno is more of No. 3 or flex fantasy football running back with the move to a less explosive offense. Moreno has slightly more value in PPR leagues.

As a result of this move, it means RB Montee Ball has some upside as an RB2 since he'll be expected to become the main back for the Denver Broncos.
