Detroit Tigers SS Jose Iglesias (shins) has officially been ruled out for the rest of the season. He's recovering from stress fractures in both of his shins. "We do not plan on having Iglesias back with us this year," general manager Dave Dombrowski said, adding that Iglesias "is progressing as projected, but we do not think he will be ready at any point this season." SS Andrew Romine has been starting at shortstop and his hitting just .200 with a .252 OPS in 39 games. SSs Eugenio Suarez or Hernan Perez may be called up eventually.
Fantasy Tip: You can now officially cut bait from Iglesias in all redraft leagues if you were holding out hope for a late-season return. Romine, because of his offensive deficiencies, should only be owned in AL leagues.

The Detroit Tigers optioned SS Hernan Perez to Triple-A Toledo and reassigned INF Danny Worth to minor league camp. SS Alex Gonzalez's contract was purchased from Triple-A Toledo.

Free-agent SS Stephen Drew (Red Sox) is open to signing a one-year deal with the Detroit Tigers, according to a person familiar with Drew's thinking. Drew is believed to want $14 million on a one-year contract. For now, SS Andrew Romine figures to share shortstop duties with SSs Danny Worth or Hernan Perez. Drew would likely want to wait until after opening day to sign, so that there won't be compensation attached to his name when he becomes a free agent the following season.

The Detroit Tigers acquired SS Andrew Romine from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Friday, March 21, in exchange for SP Jose Alvarez. Romine is a switch hitter that could compete with SSs Danny Worth and Hernan Perez for a starting job with SS Jose Iglesias (shins) out.
Fantasy Tip: Romine and Worth are probably Detroit's best options, but they're both defensive-minded shortstops. If Detroit isn't satisfied, they could look to sign Stephen Drew. A platoon could develop between Worth and Romine, meaning they're only valuable in deep AL-only leagues.

Detroit Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said SS Eugenio Suarez was a long shot to make the team's opening day roster, which means SSs Danny Worth and Hernan Perez may battle for the starting shortstop job with SS Jose Iglesias (shins) out.

Detroit Tigers SS Jose Iglesias (shins) is expected to be out at least until the All-Star break with significant injuries to both of his shins. He could wind up missing the entire season, according to a baseball source. INFs Steve Lombardozzi, Danny Worth, Hernan Perez and Eugenio Suarez have been playing shortstop in spring games, but the team doesn't have a clear replacement on roster. Free-agent SS Stephen Drew (Red Sox) and Seattle Mariners SS Nick Franklin could be options if Detroit decides to look outside the organization.
Fantasy Tip: Terrible news for Iglesias here. Fortunately for fantasy players, he likely was left undrafted in mixed leagues, because he's a defense-first player and isn't heralded for his skills with the bat. Drew seems like a real possibility, so if you could use an upgrade at shortstop and he wasn't drafted in your league, you might want to think about scooping him up.

Updating a previous report, Detroit Tigers SS Jose Iglesias (shin) has significant injuries to both shins that are expected to keep him out at least until the All-Star break and could force him to miss most or all of the season, a source confirmed Saturday, March 15. The team has no clear replacement for Iglesias on their current roster. Utilitymen Steve Lombardozzi and Danny Worth and minor-leaguers Hernan Perez and Eugenio Suarez have been playing shortstop during Grapefruit League spring games while Iglesias has been sidelined.

Detroit Tigers SS Jose Iglesias (shins) will visit with a second specialist to figure out a fix for the stress reaction in his shins. Manager Brad Ausmus said the meeting isn't a positive sign that Iglesias will return soon. Iglesias received orthotics that added extra cushion under the feet last week, and he's since resumed workouts and taken batting practice. However, he has not done anything more than light jogging, suggesting he's not close to returning to games. Iglesias could be running out of time in order to be ready for opening day. INF Steve Lombardozzi has been playing semi-regularly at shortstop with Iglesias out the last few weeks, and he'd likely fill in if Iglesias has a day-to-day injury. If Iglesias needs to start on the disabled list, the Tigers could call up SSs Hernan Perez or Eugenio Suarez.
Fantasy Tip: Iglesias isn't highly sought after in fantasy leagues, because he's a defense-first player. This news surely will have very few folks willing to take him. If he opens on the DL, none of his replacements are worth looking into, either.
