Red Sox | Mookie Betts failing as leadoff man

Mon, 18 May 2015 14:26:05 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Mookie Betts went 0-for-4 Sunday, May 17, and has just one hit in his last 20 at-bats. He reached base just nine times in 40 plate appearances on the team's road trip (7-for-38 with two walks).

Fantasy Tip: Betts ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) is hitting .221 (33-for-149) with five home runs and 21 RBI after a scorching spring training. His inconsistency really makes it tough to rely on him at FantasyScore for the price.

Red Sox | Shane Victorino returning to lineup

Mon, 11 May 2015 09:13:19 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Shane Victorino (hamstring) will come off the disabled list and return to the starting lineup Monday, May 11, and Tuesday, May 12, with the Red Sox facing two left-handed pitchers, according to manager John Farrell. "When Vic gets back to us, Vic's going to get left-handed starters, if not more," Farrell said. "But Jackie's arrival here gives us a premium defender, and we certainly like him against a lot of right-handed pitchers. We'll find the right matchups. I'm not going to say it's a strict platoon situation, by any means." Farrell also said he won't move OF Mookie Betts to right field to have OF Jackie Bradley Jr. play center field on days that they are both in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Victorino ($2,500, 5.0% of cap) should at least see semi-regular playing time in right field, and he could split time with Bradley or Daniel Nava. Coming off a DL stint and facing Oakland Athletics starter Scott Kazmir Monday isn't a time you should trust Victorino for your FantasyScore lineups.

Red Sox | Mookie Betts takes over Monday

Mon, 13 Apr 2015 17:55:44 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Mookie Betts robbed a two-run home run, stole two bases on the same pitch and hit a three-run home run in the team's home opener against the Washington Nationals Monday, April 13.

Fantasy Tip: Betts ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) has seven hits in his first 30 at-bats this year (.233) with two home runs and six RBI, and he's one of the most electric and energetic players in the game right now. It's hard not to be excited about having him in your daily lineups, even against a top-line starting pitcher.

Red Sox | Mookie Betts on spring tear

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 12:34:56 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Mookie Betts has 12 extra-base hits, which leads the Grapefruit League, and Betts is hitting .467.

Fantasy Tip: Betts ($4,500 FantasyScore, 9% of cap) could force the Red Sox's hand to deal some outfielders, of which the team definitely has a glut. It's possible Betts could cool off, but ride the hot hand as long as you can.

Red Sox | Mookie Betts set to lead off

Thu, 19 Mar 2015 13:46:14 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Mookie Betts is set to start in center field and hit leadoff on opening day, thanks to the injury to OF Rusney Castillo (oblique) Betts is currently hitting .448 with five doubles, two triples and a 1.207 OPS in spring training. He hit .291 with 12 doubles, a triple, five home runs and 18 RBI in 189 at-bats in 2014 in the majors.

Fantasy Tip: Betts is rising quickly up fantasy draft boards with his stellar play this spring coupled with Castillo's injury. Betts came into the year as a popular sleeper pick in the later rounds, mainly because of his speed. He probably won't be much of a sleeper now, and you'll likely have to overpay a bit for his services.

Red Sox | Mookie Betts having hot spring

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 12:55:22 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Mookie Betts is 11-for-24 with four doubles and two triples following the Tuesday, March 17, spring game.

Fantasy Tip: Betts has had a fantastic spring, but his fantasy value may still be dim because of the Red Sox logjam. With outfielders like Rusney Castillo, Jackie Bradley Jr., Daniel Nava, Shane Victorino and Brock Holt among others, Betts may have to go elsewhere to have better fantasy value and success.

Red Sox | Mookie Betts receives high praise

Thu, 12 Mar 2015 15:44:31 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Mookie Betts received significant praise from a scout who follows the Red Sox Thursday, March 12. "Not have him as your center fielder and leadoff hitter? Are you kidding me?" said the scout. "This guy could be an All-Star. This guy could be an All-Star this year. He could have been Rookie of the Year last year if he'd had more at-bats. He could be their best player."

Fantasy Tip: The Betts hype train is chugging along at full steam, and it is likely the offseason "sleeper" has now traveled into overvalued territory. At 22, and with just 189 at-bats under his belt, it would be ill-advised to pass over proven commodities to select Betts in the early middle rounds. He boasts eligibility at second base in the majority of formats, though, and could stick atop a potent lineup. So there is ample upside. Just make sure to calculate the risks and not get caught up in the hyperbole.
