Sources indicate the Tampa Bay Rays will open the 2014 season with a payroll higher than the $72.8 million payroll the Rays posted in 2010, which was the previous record. This would indicate the Rays will stick with SP David Price for at least the start of the 2014 campaign. "We feel like we have a really good chance to be great next year. Tampa Bay Rays executive vice president Andrew Friedman has said his team will not make any huge moves come trade-deadline time July 31, but there could be some moves made. "We are always looking to improve, and between now and Wednesday, we're going to do everything we can to do that," Friedman said. "But I can't overstate our confidence in the team that we have. This is a tremendous group of guys, and the worst thing we can do is to feel pressure to make a move just for its own sake."

Tampa Bay Rays executive VP Andrew Friedman has been appointed to MLB's new International Talent Committee, which will study issues involving "the development and acquisition" of players and such topics as a worldwide draft and age limits for signing. Friedman is one of two GMs on the committee, along with the New York Mets' Sandy Alderson. The committee is co-chaired by players union head Michael Weiner and MLB executive VP and labor relations chief Rob Manfred.
