Phillies | Ken Giles notches save

Thu, 30 Jul 2015 20:28:52 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Ken Giles picked up his second save of the year Thursday, July 30, striking out two in a scoreless ninth inning aganst the Atlanta Braves.

Fantasy Tip: Giles has converted both his save chances since Jonathan Papelbon was sent to Washington, and with 56 strikeouts in 45 2/3 innings and a 1.77 ERA, he has the stuff to be a great fantasy closer the rest of the way.

Phillies | Ken Giles turning the corner in June?

Sat, 13 Jun 2015 05:10:29 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Ken Giles has not allowed a run through four June appearances with seven strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings, and he has allowed just five base runners.

Fantasy Tip: Giles was roughed up to finish May, as he allowed five earned runs over six innings during a seven game stretch. Opposing hitters posted a .954 OPS through the skid, too. Giles' fantasy value is on the rise, though, as it is likely current closer Jonathan Papelbon is dealt sooner than later. Outside the seven game hiccup, Giles has allowed just one earned run this season, and he boasts a 9.5 K/9. He is worth a speculative add in the majority of leagues for those chasing saves.

Phillies | Ken Giles ready for opener

Sun, 05 Apr 2015 08:37:43 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Ken Giles (back) was able to pitch in the exhibition game Saturday, April 4, and believes he is ready for opening day. Giles said he did not have any pain in his back during the outing.

Fantasy Tip: Giles likely will serve as a setup man for the time being. Giles should help in most leagues in that role because of his strikeout potential but will become more valuable if he receives the closer job.

Phillies | Ken Giles hopeful to avoid DL

Wed, 01 Apr 2015 12:36:19 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Ken Giles (back) has a mild mid-back strain and was feeling better and exercising Wednesday, April 1, according to general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. "I don't think it's going to necessitate going on the DL, but he's day-to-day and we'll probably know more in the next 48 hours," Amaro said Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Giles is a closer in waiting and his strikeout potential and plus-ratios can help in the majority of leagues. This appears to be a minor injury, but it is a situation to monitor, especially if you're a Giles owner. Last season, he posted a 1.18 ERA, a 0.79 WHIP and a 12.6 K/9.

Phillies | Ken Giles' velocity down

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 15:20:33 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Ken Giles (back), who has been dealing with back stiffness for the past few days, has seen his velocity lower this spring. Giles typically touches 100 mph with his fastball, and he was hitting 95 mph during his outing Tuesday, March 31. Manager Ryne Sandberg is wondering if Giles' injury is the culprit, but pitching coach Rich Dubee isn't too concerned with a lack of velocity for Giles this spring.

Fantasy Tip: Giles' injury and lowered velocity is a mild concern as the regular season approaches. Giles should be owned in the majority of fantasy leagues. His high strikeout totals and good control will help your pitching numbers regardless of if he's closing or not.

Phillies | Ken Giles has back tightness

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 13:40:02 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Ken Giles (back) was removed from his outing with mid back tightness Tuesday, March 31, but Giles isn't too worried and said he'd be ready for opening day. However, the team may be cautious with him.

Fantasy Tip: Giles' injury shouldn't keep him out for long unless he comes back too soon and suffers a setback. While not currently the closer in Philly (that role belongs to Jonathan Papelbon), Giles is a popular late-round target in deep mixed leagues for saves speculation with Papelbon a popular name on the trading block. Giles will be first in line to jump into the closer role if Papelbon is traded this year.

Phillies | Jonathan Papelbon would welcome trade

Thu, 10 Jul 2014 09:20:55 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Jonathan Papelbon would like to pitch for a contending team, and his limited no-trade clause shouldn't pose any problems at this year's trade deadline. Papelbon locked down his 22nd save of the season Wednesday, July 9. He is hoping his strong performance will make him coveted by a contending team.

Fantasy Tip: Ken Giles is a candidate on which to speculate as Papelbon trade rumors swirl. Giles is considered the heir apparent. As for Papelbon owners, it's likely that if a team is willing to trade for Paps, that team probably would make the right-hander its closer, but it's hard to guarantee it. Giles is a fine handcuff.

Phillies | Future closer making Jonathan Papelbon expendable?

Wed, 09 Jul 2014 00:03:02 -0700

The emergence of Philadelphia Phillies RP Ken Giles has made CL Jonathan Papelbon expendable in some people's eyes, although it is expected the Phillies would have to kick in $13 million for a potential vesting option. Giles has allowed one run on four hits in 11 2/3 innings with three walks and 17 strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: If Giles is still available in your fantasy league you may want to pick him up whether or not you have Papelbon. It's always nice to have a potential handcuff candidate in case a closer goes down or loses the job, and all indications are Giles may have this job now or in 2015.
