Tigers | James McCann could return Tuesday

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 09:36:13 -0700

Detroit Tigers C James McCann (ankle) is expected to play in two more rehab games with Class AAA Toledo before rejoining the parent club Tuesday, May 3, for the series against the Cleveland Indians.

Fantasy Tip: McCann is just 2-for-15 with two RBI through his first four rehab games and may not receive as much playing time after he returns due to the performance of C Jarrod Saltalamacchia in his absence. Owners in all fantasy formats should avoid using McCann until he can demonstrate that he is completely healthy.

Fantasy Tip: McCann is having a difficult time at the dish in his rehab stint, hitting just .133 overall. Avoid him in all fantasy leagues and DFS play until he can officially return and prove his health in a full game without any setbacks.

Tigers | James McCann could rejoin team

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 15:22:30 -0700

Detroit Tigers C James McCann (ankle) might rejoin the team for their series in Minnesota against the Twins over the weekend. In three rehab games for Class AAA Toledo, he's hitting .182.

Fantasy Tip: Unfortunately for McCann, his backup, Jarrod Saltalamacchia has been flourishing while he's been out. In fact, despite a .231 batting average, Salty now has six home runs and 15 RBI. As a result, McCann's stock isn't too high right now, as he does not look like a dependable option in leagues that start one catcher. Owners should wait to see how much playing time he gets once he returns.

Tigers | James McCann back behind the plate

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 15:16:21 -0700

Detroit Tigers C James McCann (ankle) is catching for the first time during his rehab assignment Wednesday, April 27.

Fantasy Tip: Once healthy, McCann should again take over the lion's share of starts for the Tigers. He is still nothing more than a low-end option in cavernous mixed, two-catcher and AL-only formats. Stay tuned for updates on his recovery.

Tigers | James McCann starting rehab assignment

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 11:12:25 -0700

Detroit Tigers C James McCann (ankle) will start his rehab assignment with Class AAA Toledo Tuesday, April 26.

Fantasy Tip: Jarrod Saltalmacchia has cooled off a bit after a hot start while replacing the injury McCann behind the plate. McCann, despite just two hits in his first 15 at-bats to begin the year, should return from the DL as Detroit's main catcher, but he really should only be in consideration as your second fantasy backstop in two-catcher setups.

Tigers | James McCann close to rehab assignment

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 13:59:50 -0700

Detroit Tigers C James McCann (ankle) ran the bases Monday, April 25, and he could begin a rehab assignment Tuesday, April 26, as the designated hitter if he feels OK.

Fantasy Tip: Based on how hot Jarrod Saltalamacchia has been since McCann went on the DL, McCann may split time more evenly with Salty when he returns, limiting his fantasy value some. McCann will still be more of a second fantasy catcher in two-catcher setups, and he should be seen as the starter in the long run in Detroit.

Tigers | James McCann getting closer to return

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 19:24:13 -0700

Detroit Tigers C James McCann (ankle) ran the bases Friday, April 22, in order to test his sprained right ankle. Manager Brad Ausmus said he will likely begin a rehab assignment soon to insure that he is capable of catching nine innings.

Fantasy Tip: McCann started the season as the Tigers' No. 1 catcher but could experience difficulty receiving as much playing time as before due to Jarrod Saltalamacchia's strong performance in his absence. McCann should be viewed as a viable option for AL-only, cavernous mixed and two-catcher leagues.

Tigers | James McCann on schedule for return

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 14:59:15 -0700

Detroit Tigers C James McCann (ankle) is expected to return close to his activation date from the disabled list Wednesday, April 27, according to manager Brad Ausmus.

Fantasy Tip: McCann is best reserved to deep mixed, two-catcher and AL-only leagues, but he could also lose some at-bats to Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Saltalamacchia already has five home runs with 14 RBI and a .286/.375/.800 slash line through 40 plate appearances to start the season. Stay tuned for updates, but McCann's fantasy light isn't shining quite as bright following Saltalamacchia's excellent start.

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 07:26:28 -0700

Detroit Tigers C James McCann (ankle) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a Grade 2 sprain of his right ankle Tuesday, April 12. He'll be out two to four weeks. C Bobby Wilson was recalled from Class AAA Toledo.

Fantasy Tip: Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Wilson will likely split it up behind the plate. However, neither are worth much fantasy consideration right now.
