The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have released DT Frank Okam, DT Amobi Okoye, SS Larry Asante, WR Landon Cox, LB Rennie Curran, LB Jacob Cutrera, TE Drake Dunsmore, PK Kai Forbath, OT Jermarcus Hardrick, RB Robert Hughes, FB Cody Johnson, RB Mossis Madu, DT Jordan Nix, C Moe Petrus, TE Zach Pianalto, QB Brett Ratliff, CB James Rogers, WR Jordan Shipley and DT Teryl White. The team also waived injured OG Desmond Wynn (undisclosed).

Updating a previous report, Tampa Bay Buccaneers RBs Mossis Madu and Michael Smith are battling for the No. 3 running back job. Madu carried 11 times for 23 yards Wednesday, Aug. 29, against the Washington Redskins, while Smith had four carries for four yards and an 11-yard reception.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers plan to involve RB Mossis Madu more down the stretch, according to offensive coordinator Greg Olson. "I don't know if I'd call it a package of plays, but we are getting him more involved," Olson said. "We're going to continue to add to what we do with him." Madu ran eight times for 25 yards in his season debut in Week 13. The Bucs think Madu can develop into a solid third-down back.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB LeGarrette Blount (knee), who will return to game action in Week 9 against the New Orleans Saints, will be the team's primary back and will even stay on the field for third downs with RB Earnest Graham (Achilles') out for the year. "Oh yeah, I know I'm going to play third downs in this game," Blount said. "I'm probably not going to play all of them, but I know I'm going to play quite a few of them." RBs Kregg Lumpkin and Mossis Madu will spell Blount on occasion on third downs. Blount said he is fully recovered from his knee injury.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Mossis Madu will have a very limited role at tailback and will also be used on special teams when the team resumes play in Week 9. RB LeGarrette Blount (knee) is expected to return as the lead back, and RB Kregg Lumpkin will become the third-down option.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Mossis Madu is expected to be promoted from the practice squad after the season-ending injury to RB Earnest Graham (Achilles'). Madu (6-foot, 197 pounds) presents a smaller option than RBs LeGarrette Blount and Kregg Lumpkin. RB Chad Spann is another possibility to be promoted.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are thin at running back, but they won't promote RB Mossis Madu from the practice squad for the Week 6 game against the New Orleans Saints. There had been some consideration to promoting Madu since RB LeGarrette Blount (knee) is out.
