Mon, 11 Feb 2013 16:39:22 -0800 The Oakland Athletics will be cautious with the workload for RPs Grant Balfour, Ryan Cook and Sean Doolittle, and they probably won't see much work early in spring training. Doolittle threw over 70 innings last year in his first season as a pitcher.
Wed, 29 Aug 2012 11:00:31 -0700 Oakland Athletics RPs Ryan Cook and Sean Doolittle both recently discovered flaws with their pitching mechanics. Doolittle and pitching coach Curt Young recently saw that Doolittle's arm slot was lower, and he was slinging the ball toward the plate rather than achieving a nice downward angle with the ball. As a result, he lost some velocity and late motion on his heater. Doolittle hasn't given up a run in his last eight games after making a correction. Cook lost the closer gig after a stretch of four blown saves and a 10.13 ERA in eight games. Doolittle noticed a flaw in Cook's delivery, but Cook didn't want to expand on the details. Since making a correction, Cook hasn't given up a run in his last six games.
Sat, 11 Aug 2012 18:12:38 -0700 Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin said RP Ryan Cook will be taken out of the closer role for now and will be used in lower-pressure situations. Melvin did not name a temporary closer and said there are several options to use. Fantasy Tip: Melvin was reluctant, but he has only a couple of legit possibilities, as Closer Hot Seat discussed at the beginning of this past week as well as on other occasions. Fantasy owners should target Grant Balfour and then Sean Doolittle.

Sun, 01 Jul 2012 16:46:02 -0700 Oakland Athletics RP Ryan Cook was named to the American League All-Star team Sunday, July 1, and he said he was shocked. "It's awesome, there's no doubt about it. It's very cool for me and my family and friends, and I'm just honored really to even be mentioned and then to be chosen and get to represent the Oakland Athletics and the long line of people before me who have done it," Cook said.
Sun, 01 Jul 2012 11:21:18 -0700 The following pitchers will represent the American League in the 2012 All-Star Game: Chicago White Sox SP Chris Sale, Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver, Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez, Tampa Bay Rays SP David Price, Texas Rangers SP Matt Harrison, Baltimore Orioles RP Jim Johnson, Cleveland Indians RP Chris Perez, Oakland Athletics RP Ryan Cook, Tampa Bay Rays RP Fernando Rodney and Texas Rangers RP Joe Nathan. New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia (groin), who is currently on the disabled list, has been invited to participate in All-Star festivities in Kansas City but will be replaced on the active roster by Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP C.J. Wilson.
Sat, 16 Jun 2012 21:15:54 -0700 Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Saturday, June 16, that RP Ryan Cook is pitching well, but he is not necessarily the primary closer despite three saves this week. "We're gonna do the best we can to get him in that role," Melvin said. "If I need him earlier, I have confidence in the other guys (for saves.)"
Thu, 14 Jun 2012 06:18:39 -0700 Oakland Athletics RP Ryan Cook picked up his second save of the season Wednesday, June 13.
Tue, 12 Jun 2012 22:06:56 -0700 Oakland Athletics RP Ryan Cook worked around a hit and a walk in a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday, June 12, against the Colorado Rockies for his first major league save. He also recorded two strikeouts in the 21-pitch effort. Cook is part of a closer-by-committee with RPs Grant Balfour and Brian Fuentes.
