Athletics | Going with closer-by-committee

Thu, 10 Apr 2014 08:36:35 -0700

Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin said the team will give RP Jim Johnson a break from closing games out in the ninth. RPs Sean Doolittle, Luke Gregerson, Ryan Cook and Dan Otero are all options for save opportunities.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson's struggles may be rooted in mechanical issues, mainly an inconsistent release point. Bench him until he gets back on track; he could still be useful in setup situations if he corrects his flaws. And remember, there's always the chance that Johnson gets his job back to himself before long.

Gregerson and Doolittle are probably your best targets initially for save opps, with Melvin using them based on matchups, but this situation could be frustrating for fantasy owners. Cook is a nice long-term candidate for the role. Otero isn't very intriguing and would probably only see a save chance if others were unavailable.

Athletics | Ryan Cook to be eased in

Mon, 07 Apr 2014 13:50:44 -0700

Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin prefers to ease RP Ryan Cook (shoulder) back in to late-game situations after he was activated from the disabled list Monday, April 7. "As long as (Luke) Gregerson and (Sean) Doolittle are doing their thing, it allows us to not put him into a big-time fire right away," said Melvin. "But now that I say that, it's going to be the 12th inning with the bases loaded, and we end up using him."
