Cardinals | Kolten Wong not starting again

Sat, 21 May 2016 12:25:17 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong is not in the lineup on Saturday, May 21, against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Robbie Ray. 2B/SS Jedd Gyorko will play second and bat eighth in his stead.

Fantasy Tip: Wong, who didn't start Friday either, only has 18 at-bats against southpaws in 2016 and is struggling at the plate anyway, so this should not come as a surprise. Then again, Gyorko is only hitting .182 against left-handers and has cooled considerably following a hot start to the season. Both players should be avoided in all but the deepest of leagues.

Cardinals | Kolten Wong sitting vs. Arizona

Fri, 20 May 2016 15:17:56 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong is not in the starting lineup Friday, May 20. 2B/SS Jedd Gyorko is starting at second base and batting sixth against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Patrick Corbin Friday.

Fantasy Tip: Wong has begun to turn around his early-season woes with an active seven-game hitting streak and a 1.006 OPS. He has five-category upside, but it has been a rough start. He likely should be left to deep mixed and NL-only formats at this point. Gyorko has a respectable .262/.338/.411 against left-handed pitchers since the beginning of last year, and he is a viable low-priced flier in daily contests Friday.

Cardinals | Jedd Gyorko could play some outfield

Wed, 18 May 2016 16:53:47 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Jedd Gyorko could move to the outfield to provide depth once SS Jhonny Peralta (thumb) is back from the disabled list, according to manager Mike Matheny.

Fantasy Tip: Gyorko is eligible at both shortstop and second base in most leagues, too, so adding outfield eligibility would just increase his value in deeper leagues. He won't hit for average (.210), but he has decent pop for a middle infielder. Because his playing time is sporadic off the bench, he's really only rosterable in NL-only leagues right now.

Cardinals | Matt Adams, Kolten Wong sit

Sat, 14 May 2016 16:12:37 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Matt Adams and 2B Kolten Wong are out of the lineup Saturday, May 14, against left-handed Los Angeles Dodgers SP Scott Kazmir. 1B Brandon Moss is hitting cleanup, and 2B Jedd Gyorko is hitting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Moss is hitting slightly better against lefties this season, which may seem strange as a left-handed hitter. He's an all-or-nothing lower-middle option with plenty of major and not a lot of contact. Gyorko has yet to hit his stride and is just 3-for-20 (.150) this month. The numbers don't get much better against lefties, either. Pass on him today.

Cardinals | Kolten Wong out vs. lefty

Tue, 10 May 2016 14:34:51 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong is not in the starting lineup against Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim left-handed SP Hector Santiago Tuesday, May 10. 2B Jedd Gyorko will start at the keystone and is batting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Gyorko currently resides under the Mendoza Line (.197), but he does have four home runs, making him a depth option in the middle infield in deeper mixed and NL-only leagues for those that covet power. Only one of Gyorko's four homers have come off lefties, too, so he's one to avoid everywhere tonight.

Cardinals | Brandon Moss, Kolten Wong in lineup

Sun, 08 May 2016 08:32:14 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Brandon Moss and 2B Kolten Wong are back in the starting lineup against Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole Sunday, May 8, with 1B Matt Adams and INF Jedd Gyorko receiving the day off. In addition, OF Jeremy Hazelbaker will bat sixth and play center field in place of OF Randal Grichuk.

Fantasy Tip: Moss and Wong have been scuffling at the plate recently and should be viewed as possible contrarian plays in daily fantasy games. Hazelbaker is batting .300 with five home runs and 13 RBI through 70 at-bats and merits consideration as a value play in daily contests.

Cardinals | Kolten Wong sitting out

Sat, 07 May 2016 09:58:12 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong is not in the starting lineup against Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeff Locke Saturday, May 7. 2B Jedd Gyorko will start at second base and is batting seventh in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Gyorko is in the lineup because the team is facing a left-handed pitcher, but he is hitting only .200 with one home run and two RBI against lefties. Owners probably will be able to find better options to use in their lineups.

Cardinals | Matt Adams, Kolten Wong out Friday

Fri, 06 May 2016 11:45:29 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Matt Adams (knee) and 2B Kolten Wong are out of the lineup Friday, May 6. 1B Brandon Moss is hitting cleanup, and 2B Jedd Gyorko is hitting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Adams banged his knee yesterday, but he probably wouldn't start against left-hander Francisco Liriano anyway. Moss has actually hit lefties this year at a .357 clip in 14 at-bats. He hit a monstrous home run yesterday, and he's a midrange option in DFS. Gyorko hit lefties fairly well the last three years, and he's a speculative low-end start today.

Cardinals | Kolten Wong not in the lineup

Wed, 04 May 2016 14:53:09 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong is not in the starting lineup against Philadelphia Phillies SP Adam Morgan Wednesday, May 4. 2B Jedd Gyorko will start at second base and is batting sixth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Gyorko has only two hits in his last six games and may not be the best starting candidate for owners in daily fantasy leagues.

Cardinals | Kolten Wong remains sidelined

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 14:42:11 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong (illness) remains out of the starting lineup Friday, April 29. 2B Jedd Gyorko is starting at second base and batting sixth against Washington Nationals SP Stephen Strasburg.

Fantasy Tip: Wong has to be one of the biggest fantasy disappointments in the early going. He has just 11 hits in 51 at-bats (.216) and hasn't started in almost a full week. If you haven't already, you need to make alternate plans at second base, and it's not out of the question to dump him in shallow leagues. Gyorko has pop but fares much better against lefties. He does have a homer in nine career at-bats against Stras, but he's more of a sleeper pick tonight in daily contests.
