Chicago Cubs SP Kyle Hendricks will get the start Tuesday, July 22, against the San Diego Padres.
Fantasy Tip: Hendricks was decent in his first start July 10, allowing four runs and five hits over six innings with seven strikeouts in a no-decision against Cincinnati. Hendricks might get a long look with the big club after they dealt two front-end starters to Oakland last month, but he is still nothing more than a stopgap NL-only fantasy option at this point.

Chicago Cubs SP Kyle Hendricks was optioned to Triple-A Iowa Thursday, July 10.
Fantasy Tip: Hendricks had a strong debut and is auditioning for a rotation spot. The Cubs don't need a fifth starter before the All-Star break, so this could be more of a formality than anything. Hendricks is worth a look in NL-only formats and deep mixed leagues.

Chicago Cubs SP Kyle Hendricks did not factor into the decision in his major league debut Thursday, July 10, against the Cincinnati Reds. He struck out seven batters over six innings, allowing four runs, but he settled down after a rough first inning, in which he allowed three runs.
Fantasy Tip: Hendricks is auditioning for a rotation spot with the Cubs. Chalk up the shaky start to nerves. Consider Hendricks in NL-only formats and deep mixed leagues.

Chicago Cubs P Kyle Hendricks, the team's minor-league pitcher of the year in 2013, retired all eight batters he faced in the intrasquad game Wednesday, Feb. 26. "He's probably put himself on everybody's radar by the way he went about his business last year," Renteria said. "It doesn't hurt anybody to come out and do well."

The Chicago Cubs could still look to add to their stable of starting pitchers, but they've made it clear they won't go for one of the big remaining free-agent pitchers on the market, including free-agent SP Matt Garza (Rangers). Ps Justin Grimm, Kyle Hendricks and Chris Rusin could be candidates to compete for a rotation spot if nobody else is added. The Cubs also will not re-sign Scott Baker. Free-agent SPs Paul Maholm (Braves) and Jason Hammel (Orioles) have been linked to Chicago.

Chicago Cubs SP Kyle Hendricks is expected to start the season at Triple-A Iowa, although pitching coach Chris Bosio indicated Tuesday, Nov. 26, that the prospect will be given a chance to make the team in spring training. "Who's to say he couldn't start for us?," Bosio asked. "I saw a 22-year-old starter (St. Louis Cardinals SP Michael Wacha) pitch in the World Series. Why can't we take a kid that's just had a couple years in the minor leagues and put him in our rotation? Baseball has no age."
