Brewers | Ryan Braun out of Tuesday lineup

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 13:47:28 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers OF Ryan Braun is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, April 26, against the Chicago Cubs. OF Ramon Flores is batting seventh in Braun's place against Cubs SP Kyle Hendricks.

Fantasy Tip: This just appears to be a normal night off for Braun, so there is no reason to panic. Simply rest Braun in daily leagues and substitute someone else. Flores has a .133 average in the past week, so he has no fantasy value.

Cubs | Kyle Hendricks a bit unlucky in loss

Fri, 15 Apr 2016 15:17:13 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Kyle Hendricks allowed four runs -- two unearned -- on seven hits while striking out five batters and not issuing a walk through six innings during the Cubs' 6-1 loss to the Colorado Rockies Friday, April 15.

Fantasy Tip: Hendricks has 10 strikeouts through 12 2/3 innings with a 2.84 ERA and 0.95 WHIP over his first two starts. The defense and offense spoiled his shot at a win Friday, but that won't be the norm this season. Continue to view Hendricks as a solid back-of-the-rotation arm for your fantasy roster.

Cubs | Kyle Hendricks limits Arizona

Sun, 10 Apr 2016 05:45:41 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Kyle Hendricks allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out five batters during Chicago's 4-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks Saturday, April 9.

Fantasy Tip: Hendricks posted a solid 22.6 strikeout percentage with 167 total through 180 innings in 2015, which flew under the radar in most mixed formats because of his unattractive eight wins and 3.95 ERA. However, he likely was dealt some bad luck last year given his 3.36 FIP. Expect better results across all stat columns in 2016, and Hendricks is a viable No. 5 arm for your virtual rotation.

Diamondbacks | Jake Lamb out of the lineup Saturday

Sat, 09 Apr 2016 12:55:53 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks 3B Jake Lamb is not in the starting lineup against Chicago Cubs SP Kyle Hendricks on Saturday, April 9. OF/3B Brandon Drury will get the nod at third base and bat seventh.

Fantasy Tip: This appears to be a rest day for Lamb, who played the first five games of the season but has cooled off offensively after an impressive showing during the spring. Since Lamb, a left-handed hitter, started against a southpaw on Opening Day, Drury - one of the team's top prospects - appears to be clearly behind the right-handed Lamb, so he might be hard-pressed to overtake the veteran anytime soon, making both players deep-league stashes at best right now.

Cubs | Kyle Hendricks having nice spring

Wed, 23 Mar 2016 16:24:38 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Kyle Hendricks is tied for third amongst all pitchers this spring with 19 strikeouts, while amassing a 1.89 ERA and 0.84 WHIP in four starts and one relief appearance. Furthermore, hitters have registered just a .203 batting average versus the right-hander.

Fantasy Tip: Not known for his ability to rack up strikeouts, Hendricks has been a pleasant surprise this spring in that department, and it's something that could propel him into being a more useful fantasy asset in all mixed leagues. He's exhibited glimpses of promise thus far since making his major league debut a couple of years ago, and being on one of the best teams in the National League, Hendricks could offer some intriguing value to fantasy owners.

Cubs | Kyle Hendricks spins tidy outing

Fri, 18 Mar 2016 14:23:51 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Kyle Hendricks allowed one run on two hits with three strikeouts through five innings during his Cactus League start Friday, March 18.

Fantasy Tip: Hendricks improved his strikeout rate significantly last season jumping from 5.4 K/9 to a 8.4 mark while keeping his FIP relatively similar (3.32 in 2014 compared to 3.36 last season). Pitching for a contender should help in the win column, too. Hendricks is an upside rotation filler available late in mixed leagues drafts.

Cubs | Kyle Hendricks makes adjustments

Wed, 02 Mar 2016 17:25:53 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Kyle Hendricks, who is battling for the No. 5 spot in the team's starting rotation, spent the offseason working on changing the speed and angle of his pitches. He is also hoping to pitch deeper into games this season, after making it beyond the sixth inning in only seven of his 32 starts last year.

Fantasy Tip: Hendricks appears to have a leg up on Trevor Cahill, Clayton Richard, Adam Warren and Travis Wood for the No. 5 spot based on his performance last season, when he went 8-7 with a 3.95 ERA and 167 strikeouts over 180 innings. He possesses an average fastball and relies heavily on his control. Hendricks is worth targeting in the later rounds of drafts for deep mixed leagues if he performs well during spring training.

Cubs | Jason Hammel, Kyle Hendricks favored

Mon, 29 Feb 2016 14:22:54 -0800

Chicago Cubs SPs Jason Hammel and Kyle Hendricks have the upper hand for the final two starting rotation spots, according to manager Joe Maddon.

Fantasy Tip: Hammel and Hendricks both are upside picks in the latter portions of deep mixed drafts. Hammel's success is tied to his health, while Hendrick's lack of an overpowering arsenal will make him a sleeper.

Cubs | Kyle Schwarber could catch Kyle Hendricks

Sun, 28 Feb 2016 08:40:54 -0800

The Chicago Cubs are considering using C/OF Kyle Schwarber as the personal catcher for SP Kyle Hendricks in 2016. However, manager Joe Maddon hasn't committed to the move because he wants C Miguel Montero to stay sharp.

Fantasy Tip: The Cubs already have a personal catching situation in effect with C David Ross and SP Jon Lester, so this would not be a new concept. Schwarber will get the bulk of his playing time in left field in 2016 but the organization still believes he can be a viable catcher. OF Jorge Soler would likely play left field on days when Schwarber catches, although Soler has never played the position at the MLB level.

Cubs | Chicago's rotation competition

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 12:45:01 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel, who battled through a calf injury and posted a 5.10 ERA in the second half, isn't a lock for the starting rotation after the additions of SPs John Lackey and Adam Warren. Hammel also had a 14.55 ERA in two playoff starts. The Cubs are also paying Hammel $9 million in 2016, and he did have a 2.86 first-half ERA.

SP Kyle Hendricks may be fighting for a job as the No. 5 starter. "Those things will work out," general manager Jed Hoyer said. "We have a lot of guys that can start in the big leagues and I'm sure a lot of those guys will make starts for the Cubs next year." SPs Trevor Cahill, Travis Wood and Clayton Richard are also vying for rotation jobs this spring, but none are likely to beat out both Hendricks and Warren.

Fantasy Tip: Lackey and Hammel should have rotation spots locked up, with Warren on the outside looking in. Lackey is a vet that will see correction to his ERA, but he remains a viable late-round option to round out your staff. Hammel and Kendricks are speculative grabs in deep mixed affairs.
