Rays | Desmond Jennings out of lineup Saturday

Sat, 28 May 2016 11:10:24 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Desmond Jennings is out of the lineup against New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda Saturday, May 28. OF Mikie Mahtook will bat eighth and play center field. In addition, OF Steven Souza is back in the starting lineup, batting sixth and playing right field.

Fantasy Tip: Mahtook is just 1-for-9 since being called up and is not a recommended fantasy option this afternoon. On the other hand, Souza is 6-for-12 with a double, three home runs and six RBI versus Pineda in his career and makes an excellent value option for daily fantasy players.

Rays | Corey Dickerson, Brad Miller out

Wed, 25 May 2016 15:26:28 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Corey Dickerson and SS Brad Miller are not in the starting lineup against Miami Marlins left-handed SP Justin Nicolino Wednesday, May 25. OF Brandon Guyer is the designated and is hitting leadoff again, OF Mikie Mahtook is starting in left field and batting second and SS Taylor Motter is at the 6 and is hitting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Guyer has been a consistent source of production of late (.314-4-10 in May) and is a fine value choice in daily game tonight against Nicolino. Mahtook did manage nine home runs and a .295 average last year and could be a successful deep sleeper given his lineup position. Motter has also earned some more playing time with two home runs in his first 13 major league at-bats. He, however, is more of a desperation low-end selection at shortstop.

Rays | Kevin Kiermaier placed on disabled list

Sun, 22 May 2016 07:19:53 -0700

Updating a previous report, the Tampa Bay Rays have placed OF Kevin Kiermaier (hand) on the 15-day disabled list because of two fractures in his left hand. The injuries were sustained when Kiermaier attempted to make a diving catch in a game against the Detroit Tigers Saturday, May 21, and he could be sidelined for up to two months. In a corresponding move, OF Mikie Mahtook has been recalled from Class AAA Durham.

Fantasy Tip: Desmond Jennings appears poised to receive the bulk of the action in center field while Kiermaier is out. He should be rostered in AL-only and deep mixed fantasy leagues, although he has gotten off to a slow start at the plate this season, batting just .186 through 102 at-bats. Kiermaier is worth stashing in most fantasy formats.

Rays | Mikie Mahtook collects five hits

Fri, 18 Sep 2015 19:39:51 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Mikie Mahtook went 5-for-5 with two doubles and a run scored against the Baltimore Orioles Friday, Sept. 18. The five hits in a game tied a franchise record.

Fantasy Tip: Mahtook ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) raised his average for the season from .250 to .301 with the five-hit performance, although he'll probably experience difficulty finding playing time down the stretch.

Rays | Mikie Mahtook hitting second again

Wed, 09 Sep 2015 14:28:49 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Mikie Mahtook is starting in right field and batting second against Detroit Tigers SP Kyle Lobstein Wednesday, Sept. 9. C John Jaso is not in the starting lineup Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Mahtook ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) has been solid against southpaws since joining the Rays with a .294/.368/.676 slash line over 39 plate appearances. It is a small sample size, though, so Mahtook checks out as a low-priced flier, at best. Jaso ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) rarely plays against southpaws, so make sure to avoid him when Tampa faces lefties.

Rays | Steven Souza out 4-6 weeks

Mon, 03 Aug 2015 08:12:05 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Steven Souza (hand) will miss four to six weeks after X-rays showed a fractured left hand. He was put on the 15-day disabled list and OF Mikie Mahtook was recalled from the minors in a corresponding move. Manager Kevin Cash said Mahtook and OF Brandon Guyer will receive the bulk of the playing time in Souza's absence.

Fantasy Tip: In most leagues, Souza should be dropped, since he's unlikely to have much of a fantasy impact for the rest of the season. Guyer ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) and Mahtook are deep sleepers on FantasyScore, and their fantasy value in deep leagues might be minimal, too, if they split playing time.

Rays | Mikie Mahtook starting Sunday

Sun, 02 Aug 2015 07:43:16 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Mikie Mahtook will start in left field and hit seventh in the order Sunday, Aug. 2, against the Boston Red Sox and LHP Wade Miley.

Fantasy Tip: Mahtook went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI in his first game back in the majors. While he's not yet available on FantasyScore, Mahtook could become a serviceable option once he has a few more games under his belt.

Rays | John Jaso not in Friday lineup

Fri, 31 Jul 2015 15:30:19 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays C John Jaso is not in the starting lineup against Boston Red Sox left-handed SP Eduardo Rodriguez Friday, July 31. OF Joey Butler is serving as the designated hitter and batting fifth, while OF Mikie Mahtook was recalled from the minors and gets the start in left field while hitting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Butler ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) has cooled off considerably since a hot run in the first half of the season, and he's seeing inconsistent playing time, too, making him hard to rely on for fantasy purposes. Both he and Mahtook are weaker outfield plays, but Butler at least is a decent value consideration on FantasyScore. Mahtook should be ignored.

Rays | Mikie Mahtook batting eighth

Fri, 12 Jun 2015 13:16:14 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Mikie Mahtook is playing center field and batting eighth against Chicago White Sox SP John Danks Friday, June 12.

Fantasy Tip: Mahtook ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) has two hits during his major league career and both cleared the fence. He should be viewed as a desperation flier by FantasyScore players, albeit one with some upside. There is nothing scary about the matchup with Danks, either.

Sun, 07 Jun 2015 11:31:01 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Mikie Mahtook is back in the starting lineup against the Seattle Mariners Sunday, June 7, batting sixth and playing center field.

Fantasy Tip: Mahtook ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) has just one hit through 13 at-bats this season and should be avoided in FantasyScore.
