Reds | Alfredo Simon plays catch Thursday

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 11:19:12 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Alfredo Simon (shoulder) played catch Thursday, April 21, and has shown improvement after being scratched from his start Tuesday, April 19. As of now, he's still listed as the starter for Sunday, April 24, against the Chicago Cubs, but if he is unable to make that assignment, the team would likely recall SP Robert Stephenson to replace him.

Fantasy Tip: Simon enjoyed notable success with the Reds as recent as two seasons ago, but has looked like a different pitcher since, hence why owners should be avoiding him in all leagues until he gets into a groove. He owns a disastrous 12.15 ERA and 2.55 WHIP through his first two starts and one relief appearance. If he is scratched again, Stephenson isn't really worth a look either.

Reds | Robert Stephenson sent down

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 07:35:12 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Robert Stephenson was optioned to Class AAA Louisville Wednesday, April 20, with P Drew Hayes from Louisville.

Fantasy Tip: Stephenson delivered a really good start in a pinch Tuesday allowing one run on three hits in seven innings to beat the Colorado Rockies. He could be worth a spot start in DFS if/when he's called upon in the future.

Reds | Alfredo Simon scratched Tuesday

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 08:59:57 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Alfredo Simon (biceps) was scratched from his start Tuesday, April 19, against the Colorado Rockies with biceps tendonitis. SP Robert Stephenson was recalled from Class AAA Louisville to make the start. Simon is expected to take his next turn.

Fantasy Tip: Stephenson made an unimpressive start earlier this year and doesn't have the clout to make a good streamer option today.

Reds | Robert Stephenson optioned to Class AAA

Thu, 07 Apr 2016 14:16:24 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Robert Stephenson was optioned to Class AAA Louisville Thursday, April 7.

Fantasy Tip: Stephenson picked up his first career win in a spot start against the Philadelphia Phillies Thursday, but he also allowed four runs -- three earned -- on six hits and two walks over five innings while picking up a single strikeout. He is an NL-only stash at this point, but if he can fine-tune his game with Louisville and rejoin the Cincinnati rotation, there is potential mixed league appeal.

Reds | Robert Stephenson called up

Mon, 04 Apr 2016 10:24:53 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Robert Stephenson was called up to the major league roster Monday, April 4, and he's expected to make his major league debut against the Philadelphia Phillies Thursday, April 7. He allowed 13 runs (11 earned) and 12 hits with seven walks and 11 strikeouts in 10 1/3 spring innings.

Fantasy Tip: Stephenson is one of Cincy's top pitching prospects. With the Reds' starting rotation beat up and inexperienced to begin the year, they'll give Stephenson a shot against the lowly Phillies. He's a power pitcher with a heavy fastball and plenty of strikeout upside, but a lack of control has hurt him so far. Consider him as a deep sleeper daily pick Thursday. He's a potential addition off the waiver wire in NL only leagues. Keep an eye on him for now in mixed formats.

Reds | Robert Stephenson sent down

Sat, 19 Mar 2016 09:17:36 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Robert Stephenson was sent to minor league camp Friday, March 18.

Fantasy Tip: Stephenson is a power pitcher with two plus pitches that should have a good shot at entering the rotation at some point in 2016 given the Reds' lack of quality options. Keep him on your radar in dynasty/keeper and NL-only formats.

Reds | Robert Stephenson placed on DL

Tue, 18 Aug 2015 14:58:23 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Robert Stephenson (wrist) was placed on the 7-day disabled list at Class AAA Louisville with a strained right wrist Tuesday, Aug. 18. He will be back in a few weeks, and the organization will see how he comes back from the injury before determining whether Stephenson will receive a September call-up, according to general manager Walt Jocketty.

Fantasy Tip: Stephenson is the top pitching prospect in the Cincinnati system. He would be worth a flier in deep mixed leagues, if he does grab a shot at starting a game or two in September. Right now, he shouldn't be viewed as anything more than a desperation stash in NL-only and cavernous mixed leagues, though.

Reds | Cincy youngsters to be limited

Tue, 04 Aug 2015 16:31:34 -0700

Cincinnati Reds manager Bryan Price said all of the team's young pitchers, including SPs Anthony DeSclafani, Michael Lorenzen, Raisel Iglesias, David Holmberg, Keyvius Sampson, Robert Stephenson, Brandon Finnegan and John Lamb will have their innings monitored as the season wears on. "The biggest challenge is for a lot of guys who will be considered for call-ups for September or even earlier. We'll have guys who don't have that first major-league season where they pitched in September and had a chance to take their workload from 145 innings or 150 to 175 or 185. We'll have a lot of guys who we'll have to be cautious with their innings."

Fantasy Tip: That's not what owners of any of these pitchers want to hear, but it's a reality that often affects all young pitchers and their fantasy owners as the season winds down. On FantasyScore, none of the Reds young pitchers is ever a slam dunk, and their daily value will likely only continue to plummet if they are kept on pitch counts or innings limits.

Reds | Robert Stephenson up next month?

Tue, 04 Aug 2015 15:16:32 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Robert Stephenson will likely come up when rosters expand in September, in the opinion of The Cincinnati Enquirer's John Fay.

Fantasy Tip: Stephenson is one of the team's top pitching prospects, and he is 4-0 with a 2.25 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 36 strikeouts in 36 innings (six starts) since being promoted to Class AAA Louisville. His high strikeout upside and top-of-the-rotation potential makes him one to own already in keeper leagues. He'll likely have minimal value in all other leagues until 2016.

Reds | Robert Stephenson unlikely for Sunday

Fri, 31 Jul 2015 15:23:24 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Robert Stephenson is unlikely to join the rotation and start against the Pittsburgh Pirates Sunday, Aug. 2.

Fantasy Tip: Stephenson is the Reds' top pitching prospect and is a potential candidate to join the rotation at some point this season. However, he only has made five starts at the Class AAA level, so it is likely he'll require a little more minor league seasoning. He is an arm to watch, though, and a potential stash candidate in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues.
