Red Sox | Blake Swihart needs more development

Thu, 02 Apr 2015 09:02:44 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Blake Swihart will stay in the minor leagues despite the season-ending injury to C Christian Vazquez (elbow). Boston is committed to having Swihart start at Triple-A Pawtucket, according to general manager Ben Cherington. Swihart played just 18 games at Pawtucket after being promoted from Double-A Portland last year. Cherington said the decision to have Swihart start in the minors had nothing to do with his service time.

Fantasy Tip: Swihart, who turns 23 tomorrow, could be up rather quickly if he performs well at Pawtucket in the early going. He's the Red Sox's top prospect and should be stashed in AL-only and keeper leagues. Keep a close eye on him in mixed leagues, as he'll be a popular waiver wire target if he's brought up to Beantown.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart staying in minors

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 13:04:30 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Blake Swihart will begin the season with Triple-A Pawtucket, according to manager John Farrell.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure to avoid Swihart ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) in FantasyScore contests until he is recalled. With just Ryan Hanigan ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) and Sandy Leon ahead of Swihart on the depth chart, it is possible Boston will be a little more hasty bringing their top prospect to the majors. Swihart is a stash candidate in AL-only formats, and he would warrant a speculative add in deep mixed leagues with news of a promotion.

Red Sox | Christian Vazquez has sprained elbow

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 08:58:36 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Christian Vazquez (elbow) is on the 60-day disabled list due to a right elbow sprain. He will visit with Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion on his right elbow after undergoing an MRI exam last Friday. C Ryan Hanigan will become the starting catcher to start the season, and C Sandy Leon will serve as the backup. The trade for Leon likely means Boston would rather have C Blake Swihart have more seasoning in the minors.

Fantasy Tip: A combination of Hanigan and Leon hold very little fantasy value in all formats, and the Red Sox catching situation should be avoided wherever possible. Swihart, the team's top prospect, is worth stashing in AL-only and keeper leagues, though, should he come up at some point in 2015.

Red Sox | Christian Vazquez has MRI

Fri, 27 Mar 2015 09:41:37 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Christian Vazquez (elbow) underwent an MRI exam on his right elbow Thursday, March 26, and top catching prospect Blake Swihart could be in the mix on opening day is Vazquez is sidelined, according to manager John Farrell. Swihart was already sent to minor league camp, but he still may be in consideration for the opening day roster. However, Boston views Vazquez's MRI exam as more of a precautionary measure.

Fantasy Tip: Vazquez and Swihart are both young catchers with plenty of potential, but Swihart is the team's top minor league prospect, and he's much more attractive to owners in keeper leagues. Vazquez is an option as your second backstop in two-catcher leagues, because he's expected to see the most playing time in 2015. However, Swihart may be worth a speculative add in AL-only leagues if he opens the season as Boston's starting catcher.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart to start in minors

Thu, 12 Mar 2015 11:08:13 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Blake Swihart is expected to start the year at Triple-A Pawtucket, with Cs Christian Vazquez and Ryan Hanigan on the major league roster. Swihart wouldn't necessarily be the first catcher promoted in the event of an injury, either. Manager John Farrell said C Humberto Quintero would likely be the first choice for a recall in that event. The Red Sox prefer that Swihart continue his development, as he's only played 25 games at Class AAA.

Fantasy Tip: Swihart, 23 in April, is the BoSox's top prospect. He hit .261 with a home run in 69 at-bats at Pawtucket last year after hitting .300 with 12 homers and 55 RBI at Double-A Portland. He should be on the radar of those in keeper and dynasty leagues, but he should only be monitored elsewhere. There's a chance Swihart could come up late this year, but 2016 makes more sense.

Red Sox | Cole Hamels unlikely for Boston

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 16:12:25 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels doesn't appear likely to be dealt to the Boston Red Sox, as there are no signs that point toward any progress in trade talks surrounding Hamels between the two clubs, according to two major league sources. The Phillies have been rumored to covet Red Sox C Blake Swihart and OF Mookie Betts in a package for Hamels. However, Boston is in no rush to swing a trade, and they are unlikely to agree to any trade that involves either Swihart or Betts. Boston is also high on SP Henry Owens.

Fantasy Tip: Hamels' fantasy value would look much better away from the Phillies, but a trade might not happen until closer to the All-Star break now. Regardless, Hamels is one of the more reliable starting pitchers in the league, and he'll keep fantasy ace qualification in Philadelphia to start the season.

Red Sox | BOS has no urgency on Cole Hamels

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 04:22:26 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels has had trade talks cool with the Boston Red Sox, who feel no urgency to deal the pitcher. The Red Sox do not want to part with either OF Mookie Betts or C Blake Swihart in any deal and the Phillies are interested in those players.

Fantasy Tip: All indications are Hamels opens the season in Philadelphia and stays there, at least until the trading deadline. If Hamels can get past his trade demands and is healthy to pitch, he remains a solid option in most mixed and NL drafts.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart unlikely to make team

Mon, 16 Feb 2015 11:51:06 -0800

Boston Red Sox C Blake Swihart is unlikely to make the team out of spring training unless C Christian Vazquez is injured in camp. Swihart, 23 on April 3, has played in just 18 regular season games above Class AA. He'll receive plenty of attention this spring.

Padres | SD made aggressive bid for Cole Hamels

Wed, 11 Feb 2015 11:22:17 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels had been a trade target of the San Diego Padres, and the Friars made an aggressive bid to trade for Hamels before they signed SP James Shields to a four-year deal. The Phillies, though, were adamant about acquiring a blue-chip prospect in a trade for Hamels, according to sources, and the Padres might have "not had enough." Another source said the Phillies prefer to trade with the Boston Red Sox, presuming they could receive OF Mookie Betts or C Blake Swihart. However, Hamels can also block a trade to Boston.
