Red Sox | Christian Vazquez brought along slowly

Tue, 02 Feb 2016 11:43:26 -0800

Boston Red Sox C Christian Vazquez (elbow) is in the final stages of his recovery from Tommy John surgery, and he says he's 100%. However, the Red Sox are being conservative with Vazquez because of the presence of Cs Blake Swihart and Ryan Hanigan. Vazquez has been pain-free, but Boston wants to see how he responds to workouts in spring training.

Swihart is expected to start on opening day after hitting .310 with four home runs, 17 RBI and an .822 OPS in his final 129 at-bats last year. There has been speculation that the Red Sox move Swihart to first base when Vazquez is completely ready, but Boston isn't entertaining those thoughts yet.

Fantasy Tip: The switch-hitting Swihart held up pretty well last year considering he was rushed to the majors. His solid second half gives hope to fantasy owners willing to take a chance on him as a prospect with plenty of upside. You'll have to be patient with the defense-first Vazquez, but the fact remains that Swihart is and will always be the more attractive fantasy asset.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart to be regular catcher

Fri, 22 Jan 2016 17:01:46 -0800

Boston Red Sox C Blake Swihart will enter the 2016 season as the club's regular catcher, according to manager John Farrell.

Fantasy Tip: Swihart, who will turn 24 in April, hit .274 with five home runs and 31 RBIs in 84 games during his rookie campaign. He has plenty of offensive upside and should be selected during the middle rounds of drafts for mixed fantasy leagues. Boston's depth at the catching position is allowing the team to be more patient with prospect Christian Vazquez, who missed the entire 2015 season because of Tommy John surgery.

Red Sox | Christian Vazquez may not be ready

Tue, 10 Nov 2015 15:28:40 -0800

Boston Red Sox C Christian Vazquez (elbow) may need to be eased back on the field following Tommy John surgery this year, and he might not be ready to be counted on for the start of next season, according to president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. Doctors maintain that Vazquez will be ready for spring training, however. As a result, Boston isn't comfortable trading C Blake Swihart. Vazquez is currently playing winter ball in Puerto Rico as a designated hitter. The Red Sox also aren't inclined to move Swihart to another position.

Fantasy Tip: Vazquez isn't worth a gamble in shallow mixed formats because of the uncertainty around his timetable, but he's Boston's catcher of the future and should see the majority of at-bats whenever he's ready to return. That makes him attractive as a stash candidate in keeper formats. Swihart is a switch-hitting backstop with plenty of offensive upside.

Red Sox | No Blake Swihart against Yankees

Thu, 01 Oct 2015 12:52:51 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Blake Swihart is not in the starting lineup Thursday, Oct. 1. C Sandy Leon is starting behind the plate and batting eighth against New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure to avoid Swihart ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) in all fantasy formats Thursday. Leon ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is best avoided, too, as he owns an underwhelming .173/.232/.192 slash line through 118 plate appearances this season. At best, he is a desperation source of cap relief at FantasyScore.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart batting eighth vs. Orioles

Sat, 26 Sep 2015 10:07:36 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Blake Swihart will bat eighth against Baltimore Orioles SP Wei-Yin Chen Saturday, Sept. 26.

Fantasy Tip: Swihart ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) returns to the starting lineup after missing the previous two games. He is just batting .213 during the month of September and is 1-for-12 over the past week, so he is not a recommended FantasyScore option this afternoon.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart out against Orioles

Fri, 25 Sep 2015 12:16:58 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Blake Swihart is not in the starting lineup Friday, Sept. 25. C Sandy Leon is starting behind the plate and batting eighth against Baltimore Orioles SP Kevin Gausman Friday.

Fantasy Tip: Leon ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) owns a .437 OPS this season, so he stands as a desperation source of cap relief for FantasyScore players Friday. Expect Swihart ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) to return to the lineup this weekend after sitting out the past two games. Swihart is showing off his long-term upside in the second half with a .295/.350/.402 slash line.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart sitting against Rays

Thu, 24 Sep 2015 12:33:36 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Blake Swihart is not in the starting lineup Thursday, Sept. 24. C Ryan Hanigan is starting behind the plate and batting eighth against Tampa Bay Rays SP Erasmo Ramirez Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure to avoid Swihart ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) in all fantasy formats Thursday. The rookie is having a strong second half with a .298/.352/.405 slash line and 25 runs through 36 games. Hanigan ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) has a .626 OPS in September, and is nothing more than a low-priced flier at FantasyScore Thursday.

Red Sox | No Blake Swihart against Rays

Mon, 21 Sep 2015 13:06:50 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Blake Swihart is not in the starting lineup Monday, Sept. 21. C Ryan Hanigan is starting behind the plate and batting eighth against Tampa Bay Rays SP Chris Archer Monday.

Fantasy Tip: The rookie has sat out consecutive games, so you'll want to check back and for a potential injury announcement. Swihart ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) projects to return to the starting lineup Tuesday, Sept. 22, assuming he is healthy, though. Hanigan ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) is a low-end FantasyScore play Monday, as Archer ($9,200, 18.4% of cap) presents a difficult matchup.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart out vs. Jay Birds

Sun, 20 Sep 2015 07:32:52 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Blake Swihart is not in the starting lineup Sunday, Sept. 20. C Sandy Leon is starting behind the plate and batting eighth against Toronto Blue Jays SP Mark Buehrle Sunday.

Fantasy Tip: Swihart ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) sports a .315/.366/.427 slash line since the All-Star break with 25 runs through 34 games. You'll obviously want to avoid him Sunday, though. Leon ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) enters with a .434 OPS this season, and even at a contest-minimum price, he isn't worth targeting at FantasyScore.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart out Tuesday

Tue, 15 Sep 2015 13:06:17 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Blake Swihart is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, Sept. 15. C Ryan Hanigan is behind the dish and is batting eighth against Baltimore Orioles SP Ubaldo Jimenez.

Fantasy Tip: Hanigan ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) is on the expensive side for a backup catcher without much power, so you should consider him a very weak play on FantasyScore.
