Red Sox | Blake Swihart returns to lineup Sunday

Sun, 29 May 2016 07:22:28 -0700

Boston Red Sox C/OF Blake Swihart is back in the starting lineup against Toronto Blue Jays SP R.A. Dickey Sunday, May 29, batting ninth and playing left field.

Fantasy Tip: Swihart is just 3-for-19 (.158) since taking over as Boston's everyday left fielder and is batting .171 versus right-handed pitching this season, so he should be avoided in all formats Sunday. However, gaining outfield eligibility will give him an added layer of value in AL-only fantasy leagues.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart not starting

Sat, 28 May 2016 07:40:46 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Blake Swihart is not in the starting lineup against Toronto Blue Jays SP Marcus Stroman Saturday, May 28. OF Chris Young will start in left field and is batting eighth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Young is hitting .323 with one home run and five RBI in limited playing time this month. Young should have some value in daily fantasy leagues because of his recent production.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart not in catching rotation

Fri, 20 May 2016 16:26:34 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Blake Swihart is taking over in left field for the Red Sox despite just 11 games of experience at Class AAA Pawtucket. He will not be involved in catching duties. Cs Christian Vazquez and Ryan Hanigan will continue to split the catching work. Swihart still sees himself as a catcher in the long run, though. Swihart has made progress on defense, but he needs to work on his pitch-calling before he's ready to get behind the plate again. Boston has been encouraged with how Swihart has transitioned to left field. He'll form a platoon there with OF Chris Young, with Young playing against left-handers.

Fantasy Tip: Swihart's bat has always been better than his glove, and he hit .274 with five home runs and 31 RBI in 84 games as a rookie in 2015. If he continues to hit and fields his position in the outfield, he could stick long term in left in the strong side of a platoon. Gaining outfield eligibility makes him more attractive as a grab off the waiver wire in deep mixed and AL-only formats.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart in left field

Fri, 20 May 2016 12:14:28 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Blake Swihart is starting in left field and is hitting ninth against Cleveland Indians SP Corey Kluber Friday, May 20.

Fantasy Tip: With Tyler Holt on the DL, Swihart, who was working in left field in the minors, should see plenty of action in left against right-handed pitchers. The switch-hitting catcher had no homers and one RBI while hitting .278 before being demoted last month. His fantasy upside is limited hitting low in the order, but Boston's lineup has been potent throughout. Consider adding him right away in deep mixed, two-catcher and AL leagues. Adding outfielder eligibility eventually makes him more attractive.

Red Sox | Brock Holt to DL, Blake Swihart up

Fri, 20 May 2016 09:53:42 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Brock Holt (concussion) was placed on the 7-day concussion disabled list Friday, May 20, and C Blake Swihart was recalled from Class AAA Pawtucket. Swihart has spent the last month at Pawtucket learning to play left field.

Fantasy Tip: Swihart hit .243 with a homer and eight RBI in 103 at-bats. He should see some time in left with Chris Young likely facing lefties. Because of Swihart's catcher eligibility, he has some value in AL-only formats and DFS if he's still in the catcher pool. Young pounds lefties and is a DFS option each time he faces one. Holt struggled the last few weeks, but he's worth stashing in AL-only and deeper leagues.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart will shag balls in left field

Fri, 15 Apr 2016 13:51:24 -0700

Updating a previous report, Boston Red Sox C Blake Swihart will catch and begin fielding fly balls in left field with Class AAA Pawtucket. The uncertainty of C Christian Vazquez's health leading into the season delayed Swihart beginning to learn another position during spring training.

Fantasy Tip: Swihart returned a .303/.353/.453 slash line in the second half last season, and he appeared set to have a nice follow up in 2016. He likely isn't worth stashing, but in two-catcher and AL-only formats, you'll want to keep tabs on his progress because he could still have a nice fantasy impact this season. Vazquez and Ryan Hanigan will split time behind the plate for Boston, but neither are intriguing fantasy options.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart optioned

Fri, 15 Apr 2016 11:21:52 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Blake Swihart was optioned to Class AAA Pawtucket Friday, April 15.

Fantasy Tip: Swihart was off to a 5-for-18 (.278) start, but with Christian Vazquez healthy, they opted to let Swihart develop more in the minors. Vazquez is an option to be picked up off the waiver wire in AL-only and two-catcher formats, but the young backstop is more known for his stellar defense and might not be much of a step up from Swihart with the stick.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart could move positions

Fri, 15 Apr 2016 06:12:06 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Blake Swihart could be moved to a new position after struggling defensively behind the plate this season.

Fantasy Tip: Christian Vazquez sounds like the primary catcher now, but he's a bit limited offensively. He's an AL-only option right now. Swihart's value is diminished because he figures to play less frequently. He, too, is an AL-only catcher.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart with day off

Wed, 13 Apr 2016 12:12:43 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Blake Swihart is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, April 13. C Ryan Hanigan is doing the catching and is hitting eighth against Baltimore Orioles SP Ubaldo Jimenez.

Fantasy Tip: Hanigan is more of a defensive specialist and should be ignored in all fantasy baseball formats.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart out against Blue Jays

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 12:05:09 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Blake Swihart is not in the starting lineup Friday, April 8. C Ryan Hanigan is starting behind the plate and batting eighth against Toronto Blue Jays SP Marcus Stroman.

Fantasy Tip: Hanigan was expected to start Thursday, April 7, but the game was postponed, so this might be a situation where he is going to serve as Joe Kelly's personal catcher. Regardless, Hanigan is nothing more than a desperation start in all fantasy formats, as he owns a .219/.319/.303 slash line over the past three seasons. Swihart is an up-and-coming backstop, though, and he posted a .303/.353/.452 line in the second half last year. There is potential for Swihart to be a starting catcher in all fantasy leagues before the season is done.
