Red Sox | Blake Swihart slows down rehab

Thu, 21 Jul 2016 17:28:02 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Blake Swihart (ankle) has needed to "quiet down" his rehab, according to manager John Farrell. He felt effects after cutting while running.

Fantasy Tip: Swihart hasn't played since June 4, when he sustained a sprained left ankle, and now it appears it's becoming more difficult for him to get back on the field. Pegged a breakout candidate by some, it looks like that potential emergence will have to wait until next season. He slashed .258/.365/.355 in 19 ballgames before going down with the injury.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart out 6-8 weeks

Thu, 16 Jun 2016 17:03:18 -0700

Boston Red Sox C/OF Blake Swihart (ankle) is expected to miss six to eight weeks, which means he might not return until August, according to president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. Swihart will be re-evaluated soon. Dombrowski said Swihart is in a walking boot.

Fantasy Tip: Swihart had been seeing regular playing time in left field with Brock Holt (concussion) on the DL. He was only hitting .258 with no home runs and five RBI, and he should only be stashed in deeper AL-only leagues. In the meantime, Chris Young (.286-6-15) has played well with everyday playing time and deserves consideration in most mixed leagues hitting in this powerful offense.

Red Sox | No timetable for Blake Swihart

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 17:09:16 -0700

Boston Red Sox C/OF Blake Swihart (ankle) has no timetable for a return, according to manager John Farrell. Swihart is currently in a cast and will be re-evaluated in two weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Swihart is dealing with a severe ankle sprain and could be sidelined well into the second half of the season. He was hitting .258 with no home runs and five RBI, so his value had been limited to cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues. Dropping him in most formats is advised if you don't have the room. Chris Young should see the biggest boost in value from an increase in playing time in left field.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart to have ankle immobilized

Sun, 05 Jun 2016 14:00:22 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Blake Swihart (ankle) will have his ankle immobilized for the next two weeks. Manager John Farrell said Swihart has a severe ankle sprain.

Fantasy Tip: Either way you slice it, this is not good for the Red Sox' catching depth and the outfield also takes a hit as well because the Red Sox were playing Swihart in left. With both Swihart and Ryan Hanigan on the DL, the value of Christian Vazquez just shot up. As a previous tip suggested, Chris Young is likely to see more playing time as a result of Swihart's injury issues, and Rusney Castillo could be a factor in some games as well. Disable Swihart for the time being and wait for further news on how long he will be out.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart placed on disabled list

Sun, 05 Jun 2016 09:00:11 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF/C Blake Swihart (ankle) has been placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a sprained left ankle. He sustained the injury after slamming into the left-field wall in a game versus the Toronto Blue Jays Saturday, June 4, while trying to catch a fly ball.

Fantasy Tip: OF Rusney Castillo has been recalled from Class AAA Pawtucket but OF Chris Young appears likely to see the bulk of the playing time in left field for now. He's worth owning in AL-only fantasy formats.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart, Ryan Hanigan out

Sun, 05 Jun 2016 08:38:55 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Blake Swihart (ankle) and C Ryan Hanigan (neck) are not in the starting lineup against Toronto Blue Jays SP Marco Estrada Sunday, June 5. OF Chris Young will bat eighth and play left field, while C Christian Vazquez starts behind the plate and bats ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Young and Vazquez are likely to see regular playing time for the next few weeks, since Swihart and Hanigan have been placed on the disabled list. They're worthy of consideration as roster depth for fantasy teams in AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart leaves with injury

Sat, 04 Jun 2016 15:35:48 -0700

Boston Red Sox C/OF Blake Swihart (ankle) left the game after suffering an apparent left ankle injury when he struck the wall in left field Saturday, June 4.

Fantasy Tip: He had to be helped off the field after he jammed the ankle into the wall. It could involve his Achilles' as well. Chris Young would figure to receive more playing time if Swihart is out for an extended period. Young is really only an option in fantasy against left-handers.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart returns to lineup Sunday

Sun, 29 May 2016 07:22:28 -0700

Boston Red Sox C/OF Blake Swihart is back in the starting lineup against Toronto Blue Jays SP R.A. Dickey Sunday, May 29, batting ninth and playing left field.

Fantasy Tip: Swihart is just 3-for-19 (.158) since taking over as Boston's everyday left fielder and is batting .171 versus right-handed pitching this season, so he should be avoided in all formats Sunday. However, gaining outfield eligibility will give him an added layer of value in AL-only fantasy leagues.

Sat, 28 May 2016 07:40:46 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Blake Swihart is not in the starting lineup against Toronto Blue Jays SP Marcus Stroman Saturday, May 28. OF Chris Young will start in left field and is batting eighth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Young is hitting .323 with one home run and five RBI in limited playing time this month. Young should have some value in daily fantasy leagues because of his recent production.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart not in catching rotation

Fri, 20 May 2016 16:26:34 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Blake Swihart is taking over in left field for the Red Sox despite just 11 games of experience at Class AAA Pawtucket. He will not be involved in catching duties. Cs Christian Vazquez and Ryan Hanigan will continue to split the catching work. Swihart still sees himself as a catcher in the long run, though. Swihart has made progress on defense, but he needs to work on his pitch-calling before he's ready to get behind the plate again. Boston has been encouraged with how Swihart has transitioned to left field. He'll form a platoon there with OF Chris Young, with Young playing against left-handers.

Fantasy Tip: Swihart's bat has always been better than his glove, and he hit .274 with five home runs and 31 RBI in 84 games as a rookie in 2015. If he continues to hit and fields his position in the outfield, he could stick long term in left in the strong side of a platoon. Gaining outfield eligibility makes him more attractive as a grab off the waiver wire in deep mixed and AL-only formats.
