Cardinals | Kolten Wong sitting

Tue, 15 Apr 2014 13:24:55 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong isn't in the lineup Tuesday, April 15. 2B Mark Ellis is starting in his place.

Fantasy Tip: Odd, because they're facing right-hander Marco Estrada, but the youngster will get days off like this now and then. No worries for the long term.

Cardinals | Kolten Wong coming to life

Wed, 12 Mar 2014 15:59:26 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong hit his second long homer in two days on Wednesday, March 12, in Grapefruit League action. He started exhibition play nothing for 10 but has gone 7-for-13 since.

Fantasy Tip: Wong is a flier for those in deep mixed leagues. He isn't known for power, but he could easily contribute double-digit stolen bases if he logs most of the Cards' PAs at the keystone this year.

Cardinals | Agree to terms with Mark Ellis

Sun, 15 Dec 2013 09:31:25 -0800

The St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to terms with free-agent 2B Mark Ellis (Dodgers) on a one-year deal pending a physical. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Ellis likely will have more value in NL-only leagues and probably should not be drafted in most mixed leagues. He could be used as a utility infielder with 2B Kolten Wong receiving more of the playing time at second base.

Cardinals | Not moving Kolten Wong

Mon, 25 Nov 2013 08:23:32 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said there has been a lot of talk about putting SS Jhonny Peralta at third base and trading 2B Kolten Wong. There is no truth to that. He said a goal this offseason was to find a way to get Wong playing time.

Cardinals | Could David Freese be traded?

Mon, 19 Aug 2013 00:33:09 -0700

The St. Louis Cardinals' promotion of 2B Kolten Wong could be the first step towards the club trading 3B David Freese. Freese is having an off year at the plate, but the free agent market at third this offseason will be very thin. Freese is under club control through 2015 and while he's not an All-Star, it's easy to see teams making a play for him.

Cardinals | Kolten Wong to play regularly

Fri, 16 Aug 2013 14:25:12 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong is starting at second base and hitting sixth in the lineup for his major league debut Friday, Aug. 16. 2B Matt Carpenter was moved to third base and 3B David Freese is on the bench. However, Wong won't play every day, but the team will try to get him frequent playing time. It could mean decreased time for Freese. A platoon situation could emerge between Freese, who hits right-handed, and the left-handed hitting Wong. "All we're trying to do is maximize what we have," manager Mike Matheny said. "Kolten has been our most consistent guy in Triple-A. ... And in order to use him, we're going to have to be creative and guys are going to have to understand that we're trying to help our club as a whole." Wong won't take over the leadoff spot from Carpenter when he's in the lineup. Wong was hitting .303 with a .369 on-base percentage and 20 stolen bases at Triple-A Memphis.

Fantasy Tip: Wong can do a little bit of everything, and with semi-regular playing time, he could be a nice weapon for fantasy owners for the rest of the season. He should be owned in all NL-only and most deep mixed leagues. Freese, whose power has failed to come around this year, should be benched or outright cut in shallow leagues.

Cardinals | Kolten Wong to be called up

Thu, 15 Aug 2013 18:59:04 -0700

The St. Louis Cardinals will call up 2B Kolten Wong from Triple-A Memphis. OF Adron Chambers will be optioned to Triple-A Memphis.

Fantasy Tip: Owners in NL-only leagues should look to pick up Wong because he could receive fairly regular playing time. Owners in mixed leagues should take a wait-and-see approach before pursuing him.

Cardinals | Kolten Wong off to good start

Wed, 17 Apr 2013 08:19:31 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong is hitting .348 with nine RBIs in 46 at-bats at Triple-A Memphis.

Fantasy Tip: Wong looks like he's close to ready for the majors. The Cardinals love INF Matt Carpenter, and it's unlikely they'd deal him to free up second base for Wong. However, the first injury to Carpenter or David Freese, and Wong is likely to be called up.
