Cardinals | Kolten Wong remains sidelined

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 14:42:11 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong (illness) remains out of the starting lineup Friday, April 29. 2B Jedd Gyorko is starting at second base and batting sixth against Washington Nationals SP Stephen Strasburg.

Fantasy Tip: Wong has to be one of the biggest fantasy disappointments in the early going. He has just 11 hits in 51 at-bats (.216) and hasn't started in almost a full week. If you haven't already, you need to make alternate plans at second base, and it's not out of the question to dump him in shallow leagues. Gyorko has pop but fares much better against lefties. He does have a homer in nine career at-bats against Stras, but he's more of a sleeper pick tonight in daily contests.

Cardinals | Kolten Wong remains out of the lineup

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 14:41:56 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong (illness) is not in the starting lineup Thursday, April 28. 2B Jedd Gyorko is starting at second base and batting seventh against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Rubby De La Rosa Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: Wong hasn't registered an extra-base hit yet and has just two RBI through his first 58 plate appearances, and he is quickly becoming one of the bigger early-season busts, especially with the rest of the lineup hitting well. Gyorko is a viable flier in daily contests Thursday, but he has historically fared much better against southpaws and owns an underwhelming . 237/.279/.399 slash line against right-handed pitchers dating back to the beginning of 2015.

Cardinals | Kolten Wong remains out

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 14:42:36 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong (illness) is not in the starting lineup against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Patrick Corbin Wednesday, April 27. 2B Jedd Gyorko will start at second base and is batting sixth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Gyorko will receive his fourth straight start at second base and should keep the job until Wong returns. He has gone 6-for-19 with two home runs and four RBI over the last seven days and could be an attractive option in daily fantasy leagues.

Cardinals | Kolten Wong quarantined

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 17:37:47 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong (illness) is still "quite ill." He's at the ballpark but has been quarantined from teammates Tuesday, April 26.

Fantasy Tip: This isn't a good sign for Wong, who has struggled out of the gate with a .204/.281/.204 line to go along with zero home runs and just two RBI in 49 at-bats. It sounds like this could be something that sidelines him at least a few more days, if not more, so owners should be scrambling to scoop up another option at second base. Even when he's healthy again, Wong might lose some playing time based on his performance thus far.

Cardinals | No Kolten Wong again Tuesday

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 14:46:19 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong remains out of the starting lineup again Tuesday, April 26. 2B Jedd Gyorko is at the keystone and is hitting seventh against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Shelby Miller.

Fantasy Tip: That's three straight games Wong has been on the bench against right-handers, and it's certainly concerning to his owners after he has started hitting only .204 (10-for-49) with no homers and just two RBI. Gyorko could continue to see more starts at Wong's expense, making it understandable to cut Wong in shallow mixed leagues if better options are available.

Cardinals | Matt Adams, Kolten Wong sitting

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 15:26:21 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Matt Adams and 2B Kolten Wong are not in the starting lineup Monday, April 25. 1B Brandon Moss is at first base and is hitting cleanup, while 2B Jedd Gyorko is at the keystone and is batting seventh against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Zack Greinke.

Fantasy Tip: Moss could be a sneaky target in daily games as a sleeper against Greinke. Moss has a home run in seven at-bats against Greinke in his career. Gyorko had a big game against his old team Sunday and could be stealing more playing time away from the struggling Wong, mainly against left-handers. Despite a strong game yesterday, Gyorko is a risky daily pick against Greinke, who he has just five hits off of in 17 plate appearances.

Cardinals | St. Louis resting several starters

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 13:10:01 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday, 1B Matt Adams and 2B Kolten Wong are not in the starting lineup against San Diego Padres SP Colin Rea Sunday, April 24. OF Brandon Moss will start at first base and is batting third in the lineup. OF Jeremy Hazelbaker will start in left field and is batting sixth, while 2B Jedd Gyorko will start at second base and is batting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Moss and Hazelbaker have struggled at the plate recently but could still be decent options in daily fantasy leagues because of his success earlier in the month. Gyorko is hitting .333 with two home runs and four RBI over the last seven days and could also be an attractive starting option.

Cardinals | Matt Carpenter with day off

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 14:10:40 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 3B Matt Carpenter is out of the lineup Saturday, April 23, with 2B Kolten Wong sliding up into the leadoff spot. 1B Brandon Moss is also in there hitting cleanup.

Fantasy Tip: Wong is hitting just .222 but faces a relative unknown in Cesar Vargas. In the leadoff spot, he has some upside. Moss has been all or nothing with a .189-4-10 line. He's worth a midrange flyer.

Cardinals | St. Louis resting five players

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 10:56:18 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Jeremy Hazelbaker, OF Matt Holliday, C Yadier Molina, 2B Kolten Wong and SS Aledmys Diaz are not in the starting lineup against Cincinnati Reds SP Jon Moscot Sunday, April 17. 1B Brandon Moss is starting in left field and is batting second. 1B Matt Adams is starting at first base and is batting fifth. 2B Jedd Gyorko is starting at second base and is batting sixth. SS Greg Garcia is starting at shortstop and is batting seventh, while C Eric Fryer starting at catcher and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Fryer and Garcia have played well early this season but probably should not be options in most leagues. Moss, Adams and Gyorko could be used in daily fantasy leagues.

Cardinals | Jeremy Hazelbaker, Kolten Wong sitting

Sat, 16 Apr 2016 09:50:23 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Jeremy Hazelbaker and 2B Kolten Wong are not in the starting lineup against Cincinnati Reds SP Brandon Finnegan. OF Matt Holliday will start in left field in place of Hazelbaker. 1B Brandon Moss will start at first base and is hitting sixth, while 2B Jedd Gyorko will start at second base and is batting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Moss is hitting only .238 so far but does have three home runs during that span, which makes him a decent option in daily fantasy leagues. Gyorko is batting under .200 and can be avoided in most leagues at this point.
