The Cardinals love INF Matt Carpenter, and it's unlikely they'd deal him to free up second base for Wong. However, the first injury to Carpenter or David Freese, and Wong is likely to be called up.

Sun, 20 Jan 2013 21:58:51 -0800 St. Louis Cardinals OF Oscar Taveras and 2B Kolten Wong might receive ample playing time with extended spring and veterans away at the World Baseball Classic. Tue, 15 Jan 2013 15:34:18 -0800 St. Louis Cardinals 2B Daniel Descalso is the favorite to enter the season as the starting second baseman, but 3B Matt Carpenter will challenge him at the position. INFs Pete Kozma and Ryan Jackson are in the mix for bench spots, but 2B Kolten Wong could make his way up at some point if he plays well in the minors.

Thu, 25 Oct 2012 10:56:53 -0700 St. Louis Cardinals 2B Skip Schumaker won't be an option at second base next season. Mon, 09 Jul 2012 08:50:53 -0700 The St. Louis Cardinals don't plan to rush 2B Kolten Wong and OF Oscar Taveras from Double-A to Triple-A, despite both having good seasons. "I don't know if there's anything specific they need to do to get to Triple A,'' farm director John Vuch said. "There's not a great deal of urgency for us to move them there right now. ... Just to get to Double-A this year (they) are one step ahead. Once you've made an aggressive move like that you don't want to be aggressive on top of aggressive."
Fri, 06 Jul 2012 11:00:01 -0700 The St. Louis Cardinals could try to trade for Milwaukee Brewers SP Zack Greinke despite the comments he made in the playoffs last year, saying SP Chris Carpenter had a "phony attitude" because he would yell at opposing hitters from the mound. However, St. Louis won't meet Milwaukee's price, and it's unlikely the Brewers will even trade him within their division, according to an official with knowledge of the team's thinking. The Cardinals are more likely to go after a middle-of-the-rotation starter. They could also be looking to improve at second base, but the team doesn't want to block 2B Kolten Wong, who is playing at Class AA.
