Cardinals | Kolten Wong wants to set the table

Fri, 22 Jan 2016 12:29:05 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong wants to bat leadoff this season, and manager Mike Matheny was encouraged by Wong's campaigning. "For me to hear that from Kolten is kind of just him looking at the landscape of our club and thinking, 'How can I jump into this and help us more?' And he thinks him being at the top of the order could allow him freedom to do other things. I'm excited to watch what he does," Matheny said.

Fantasy Tip: Following a strong start to the season, Wong struggled down the stretch last year with a .238/.292/.322 slash line and just 27 runs, two home runs, 24 RBI and five stolen bases after the All-Star break. His stock might be deflated enough to make him a real bargain at the later stages of drafts this season. He is just entering his offensive prime, after all.

Cardinals | Several STL starters resting in Game 2

Sun, 04 Oct 2015 13:13:12 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday, OF Jason Heyward, 3B Matt Carpenter, OF Stephen Piscotty, SS Jhonny Peralta and 2B Kolten Wong are all not starting in Game 2 of the doubleheader Sunday, Oct. 4, against the Atlanta Braves.

Fantasy Tip: Seeing this is the final game of the regular season, this is to be expected. Manager Mike Matheny is simply resting his starters. Of the reserves, OF Tommy Pham ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) might be worth a flier on FantasyScore.

Cardinals | St. Louis resting regulars

Fri, 02 Oct 2015 13:29:03 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OFs Jason Heyward, Matt Holliday and Stephen Piscotty (head), 3B Matt Carpenter, 2B Kolten Wong and SS Jhonny Peralta are not in the starting lineup against the Atlanta Braves Friday, Oct. 2.

Fantasy Tip: The Cardinals boast strong depth, so their lineup isn't exactly a cast of Class AAA players. However, Braves SP Julio Teheran ($6,600, 13.2% of cap) owns a 3.06 ERA and held opposing hitters to a .596 OPS through his 16 starts at Turner Field this season. There are enough cushier matchups to target for FantasyScore players Friday.

Cardinals | Kolten Wong returns to lineup

Sat, 26 Sep 2015 12:23:46 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong is back in the starting lineup against Milwaukee Brewers SP Tyler Wagner Saturday, Sept. 26, batting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Wong ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) is just 2-for-16 with a double and two RBIs over the past seven days, so FantasyScore owners may want to avoid using him while he's in the middle of a slump.

Cardinals | No Kolten Wong Friday

Fri, 25 Sep 2015 16:40:35 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong is not in the starting lineup Friday, Sept. 25. 2B Greg Garcia is starting at second base and is batting seventh against Milwaukee Brewers SP Ariel Pena.

Fantasy Tip: There are much better options to choose from at second base than Garcia ($1,700, 3.4% of cap) tonight on FantasyScore.

Cardinals | Kolten Wong out against southpaw

Wed, 23 Sep 2015 15:05:39 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong is not in the lineup against Cincinnati Reds left-handed SP Brandon Finnegan Wednesday, Sept. 23. 3B Matt Carpenter moves to second base and 1B Mark Reynolds is starting at the hot corner and is batting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Reynolds ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) has plenty of power but is a lotto ticket for FantasyScore gamers tonight, even against a left-handed youngster. Reynolds swings and misses too much to be relied on consistently, and he's hitting only .221 (23-for-104) with five of his 12 home runs this season. Carpenter ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) isn't attractive when facing lefties from the right side, either.

Cardinals | Kolten Wong returns to action

Sat, 12 Sep 2015 10:27:29 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong (calf) is back in the starting lineup against the Cincinnati Reds Saturday, Sept. 12, batting sixth.

Fantasy Tip: FantasyScore owners may want to avoid using Wong ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) in his first game back, after he missed several games due to tightness in his calf.

Cardinals | Kolten Wong still sidelined

Fri, 11 Sep 2015 10:48:20 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong (calf) remains out of the lineup Friday, Sept. 11. 2B Greg Garcia is starting at the keystone and is batting seventh against Cincinnati Reds SP Michael Lorenzen.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia ($1,700, 3.4% of cap) does have 13 hits in 45 at-bats for the Cards since being called up, including one home run, but he's mainly a desperation pick for salary cap relief on FantasyScore. Look for Wong ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) to try to return to the lineup sometime this weekend.

Cardinals | Kolten Wong resumes running

Thu, 10 Sep 2015 17:06:46 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong (calf) took batting practice with the team and tested out his injured calf by doing some running Thursday, Sept. 10. He expects to participate in more intense running drills Friday, Sept. 11.

Fantasy Tip: Wong ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) is dealing with a slight tear in his left calf. He believes the injury happened when he attempted to pursue an infield hit Sunday, Sept. 6. Although the injury is considered minor, FantasyScore owners should avoid using him in his first game back to insure that he is completely healthy.

Cardinals | Kolten Wong eyeing the weekend

Thu, 10 Sep 2015 13:19:59 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong (calf) ran without issue Thursday, Sept. 10, and hopes to return to the lineup this weekend. He did acknowledge his calf injury is a stain and not just tightness, though.

Fantasy Tip: Wong ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) has fell off the cliff in the second half of the season with a .236/.292/.315 slash line since the All-Star break. At this point, he is a low-end middle infield option in deep mixed leagues. Though, it wouldn't be shocking to see a strong finish from Wong once he returns from his injury.
