Padres | Cory Spangenberg sitting out

Sat, 29 Aug 2015 13:09:19 -0700

San Diego Padres 2B Cory Spangenberg is not in the starting lineup against Philadelphia Phillies SP Adam Morgan. 2B Jedd Gyorko will start at second base, while SS Clint Barmes will start at shortstop and is batting eighth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Spangenberg ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) should return to the lineup in the near future. Barmes ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) is hitting only .161 this month and should be avoided by owners on FantasyScore.

Padres | No Jedd Gyorko vs. Braves

Tue, 18 Aug 2015 15:49:56 -0700

San Diego Padres 2B Jedd Gyorko is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, Aug. 18. 2B Cory Spangenberg is playing second base and batting second, and SS Alexi Amarista is starting at shortstop and batting eighth against Atlanta Braves SP Matt Wisler Tuesday.

Fantasy Tip: In a prime spot in the lineup, Spangenberg ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) boasts some upside as a source of cap relief at FantasyScore Tuesday. Amarista ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) and Gyorko ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) can be avoided. With Spangenberg back, there could be some timeshares developing in the infield for the Padres, so continue to check back for updates on who will receive the majority of playing time.

Padres | Alexi Amarista sitting Monday

Mon, 17 Aug 2015 15:31:46 -0700

San Diego Padres SS Alexi Amarista is not in the starting lineup Monday, Aug. 17. 2B Jedd Gyorko will move to shortstop, and 2B Cory Spangenberg will start at the keystone and hit second against Atlanta Braves SP Williams Perez.

Fantasy Tip: Spangenberg ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) just returned from the DL at the end of last week, and he's batting .257 (47-for-183) with two home runs, 11 RBI and seven stolen bases this year. He's a cheap, affordable sleeper play on FantasyScore tonight with an agreeable lineup placement against a hittable pitcher.

Padres | Cory Spangenberg playing third base

Sun, 16 Aug 2015 12:42:29 -0700

San Diego Padres INF Cory Spangenberg will lead off and play third base against Colorado Rockies SP Chris Rusin Sunday, Aug. 16.

Fantasy Tip: Spangenberg ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) is 7-for-16 with three doubles, four runs scored and an RBI against Colorado pitching this season, making this a rather favorable matchup for him in FantasyScore.

Padres | Cory Spangenberg activated

Fri, 14 Aug 2015 13:57:49 -0700

San Diego Padres 2B Cory Spangenberg (knee) was activated from the 15-day disabled list Friday, Aug. 14, and RP Frank Garces was optioned to Class AAA El Paso in a corresponding move. Spangenberg was hitting .211 (8-for-38) with a triple, home run and four RBI in nine rehab games in the minors.

Fantasy Tip: With both Yangervis Solarte and Jedd Gyorko hitting well for the Friars, it's unclear how much Spangenberg ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) will play in his return to the team. As a result, he'll mainly be middle infield depth for his speed in deeper mixed leagues. It might be hard to find a good spot to use him on FantasyScore.

Padres | Cory Spangenberg close to return

Fri, 14 Aug 2015 11:07:26 -0700

San Diego Padres 2B Cory Spangenberg (knee) said he is close to returning from the disabled list and is 7-for-35 with a triple, two steals, two RBI and two runs scored on his minor league rehab assignment in eight games, and he hit leadoff with Class AA San Antonio. He's played both second and third base mainly, and he said that his swing is close to being able to return. However, it's unclear where Spangenberg would play in the majors, since 2B Yangervis Solarte and 2B Jedd Gyorko have been hot lately.

Fantasy Tip: With no clear path to regular playing time, Spangenberg ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) probably won't have a ton of fantasy value when he returns, although he could provide nice depth for owners in deep mixed leagues.

Padres | Cory Spangenberg close to rehab

Sun, 02 Aug 2015 06:08:40 -0700

San Diego Padres 2B Cory Spangenberg (knee) is expected to begin a rehab assignment within the coming week.

Fantasy Tip: Spangenberg ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) lacks power, and he hits for a modest .254 batting average. FantasyScore owners can continue to ignore Spangenberg following his return.

Padres | Cory Spangenberg rehab update

Fri, 10 Jul 2015 17:12:03 -0700

San Diego Padres INF Cory Spangenberg's (knee) recovery from a left knee contusion hasn't gone as quickly as the team had hoped, according to manager Pat Murphy.

Fantasy Tip: Spangenberg ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) was placed on the disabled list nearly two weeks ago and there appears to be no timetable for his return. He should continue to be stashed in NL-only and deep mixed fantasy baseball leagues for now. In the meantime, Jedd Gyorko ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) and Yangervis Solarte ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) are splitting time at second base for the Padres, with Gyorko having better numbers against lefties and Solarte faring better versus righties.

Padres | Cory Spangenberg to DL

Tue, 30 Jun 2015 11:52:22 -0700

San Diego Padres 2B Cory Spangenberg (knee) was put on the 15-day disabled list with a left knee contusion Tuesday, June 30. The DL move is retroactive to June 28. 2B Jedd Gyorko was recalled from Class AAA El Paso in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Spangenberg can probably be dropped if he was on your roster in shallow mixed leagues. Hang onto him elsewhere. Some combination of Yangervis Solarte ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) and Gyorko will likely split time at the keystone. However, Solarte has cooled off considerably since earlier in the season and Gyorko has continued to disappoint. Solarte is the more attractive fantasy option in deeper mixed leagues, but Gyorko could provide more power if he sees enough playing time.

Padres | Cory Spangenberg left game Saturday

Sun, 28 Jun 2015 05:13:46 -0700

San Diego Padres 2B Cory Spangenberg (knee) left the game Saturday, June 27, against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the fourth inning due to a sprained left knee. 2B Yangervis Solarte would be in line for increased playing time if Spangenberg is forced to miss time.

Fantasy Tip: Solarte ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) went 5-for-7 in his last two games. He'll be worth FantasyScore consideration against right-handed pitching, as he's hitting .267 for the season, with both of his home runs coming from the left-hand side of the plate.
