Cubs | Javier Baez to be super-utility player?

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 14:54:33 -0800

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez played some center field in winter ball this offseason and felt very comfortable there. With all of the infield spots blocked, the Cubs would like Baez to move around on the diamond. He could see time as the fourth outfielder or win a job outright.

"He is one of the best baseball position players we have in the organization," said bench coach Dave Martinez. "We are going to try and play him at multiple positions and make it fun for him. He told us he is all for it and not worried in the least. On offense, we want him to be himself and let the ball get in there on him before he reacts."

Fantasy Tip: While Baez is unlikely to be a starter for Chicago, that doesn't mean he's useless for fantasy owners in 2016. All it would take is one injury to open up significant playing time, and he could be more attractive with more positional flexibility. Baez remains a worthwhile stash for his power in deeper leagues.

Cubs | Javier Baez playing center field

Fri, 18 Dec 2015 17:26:35 -0800

Chicago Cubs INF Javier Baez is playing center field for the first time in a Puerto Rican winter league game Friday, Dec. 18.

Fantasy Tip: Baez once again finds himself without a regular position due to the team's acquisition of INF/OF Ben Zobrist, so he is looking to increase his versatility in order to receive more at-bats. His fantasy value will remain limited as long as he stays with the Cubs and will skyrocket if he ends up with a club that can guarantee him regular playing time.

Padres | Friars have interest in Javier Baez

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 15:01:10 -0800

The San Diego Padres are interested in trading for Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez, but there is no momentum toward a deal right now, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Baez is a man without a position right now for the Cubs after they signed Ben Zobrist Tuesday night. That clouds his fantasy value although he remains one of the more attractive young power middle-infield bats. A trade to a team that has more playing time available to him would boost his value significantly.

Rays | Tampa discussing Javier Baez

Mon, 07 Dec 2015 10:14:39 -0800

The Tampa Bay Rays have had talks with the Chicago Cubs about 2B Javier Baez, according to a source. The Rays are willing to trade both starting pitchers and relievers.

Fantasy Tip: A trade of Baez would open up consistent playing time for Starlin Castro, once again putting him into the discussion as a valuable fantasy middle infielder. Baez has incredible power for a youngster but continues to struggle with strikeouts. A move to Tampa would hamper his power production slightly, but not enough to completely turn fantasy owners away from his high upside as a power-hitting middle infielder.

Cubs | CHC to explore trade talk for two players

Sun, 15 Nov 2015 14:14:56 -0800

Chicago Cubs OF Jorge Soler and 2B Javier Baez are the subject of trade interest, and the team will explore offers, according to sources. 3B Kris Bryant, SS Addison Russell and OF Kyle Schwarber are also attracting attention but the club does not intend to move them.

Fantasy Tip: Soler and Baez would bring back pitching, which is what the Cubs sorely need more of at the moment. Soler will get attention in the middle rounds of most mixed drafts, and Baez figures to go a bit lower.

Cubs | Starlin Castro expected to start at second

Thu, 12 Nov 2015 18:03:34 -0800

Chicago Cubs 2B Starlin Castro is expected to be the team's regular starter at second base next season, which could make INF Javier Baez expendable. Multiple teams have expressed interest in trading for him.

Fantasy Tip: Castro began the 2015 season as the Cubs' regular shortstop but was eventually replaced by Addison Russell. However, he ended up receiving regular playing time at the keystone position down the stretch. Castro hit .265 with 11 home runs and 69 RBIs in 151 regular-season games and could be a middle infield option in NL-only and deep mixed leagues, although he is a streaky hitter who is prone to deep slumps. Baez's power potential makes him a coveted player in dynasty and deep keeper leagues, although his opportunities to receive regular at-bats in Chicago will be limited, barring an injury to a starter or another infielder getting traded this offseason.

Cubs | Javier Baez to start at SS

Thu, 15 Oct 2015 11:36:36 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez will start at shortstop in the National League Championship Series with SS Addison Russell (hamstring) injured. 2B Starlin Castro will remain at second base.

Fantasy Tip: Baez has four hits (one homer) in five at-bats with three RBI and a stolen base in the playoffs this year. He's an attractive young player, especially for his plus power, but he remains a sleeper pick on FantasyScore for now.

Cubs | Javier Baez fills in admirably

Tue, 13 Oct 2015 21:32:52 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez started at shortstop for the injured SS Addison Russell (hamstring) in Game 4 of the National League Division Series against the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday, Oct. 13. He went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run.

Fantasy Tip: Baez ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) is worth remembering in Game 1 of the NLCS is Russell is still not healthy enough to play.

Cubs | Addison Russell out of Game 4 lineup

Tue, 13 Oct 2015 10:30:05 -0700

Chicago Cubs SS Addison Russell (hamstring) is out of the lineup Tuesday, Oct. 13, with SS Javier Baez hitting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Baez ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) is a boom-or-bust FantasyScore play with a ton of power against John Lackey.

Cubs | Addison Russell leaves Game 3

Mon, 12 Oct 2015 16:29:10 -0700

Chicago Cubs SS Addison Russell (hand) left Game 3 of the division series against the St. Louis Cardinals early Monday, Oct. 12, after injuring his right hand sliding into third base head-first on a triple. 2B Javier Baez replaced him in the game.

Fantasy Tip: Losing Russell ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) for the rest of the series would be a huge blow to Chicago. Stay tuned on an update on his condition. Baez ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) has experience at shortstop but isn't as sound of a defender as Russell. Baez also has plenty of power but has more swing and miss to his game. If Russell needs to miss time, Baez has sleeper status in daily games for his power.
