Cubs | Javier Baez drives in three runs Friday

Fri, 04 Sep 2015 17:46:23 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Javier Baez went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs against the Arizona Diamondbacks Friday, Sept. 4.

Fantasy Tip: The blast was Baez's ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) first homer in three games since being promoted from the minors earlier this week. He makes an excellent value play in FantasyScore, provided that the Cubs are able to find enough playing time for him at third base, shortstop and second base.

Cubs | Chicago to play matchups at 2B

Fri, 04 Sep 2015 11:09:23 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez is starting at second base Friday, Sept. 4, but manager Joe Maddon said 2B Tommy La Stella would see most of the starts against right-handed pitchers down the stretch. SS Starlin Castro could also be mixed in here and there, too. "It's just picking the best matchup for that pitcher that game," Maddon said.

Fantasy Tip: All three of these second basemen will be tough to predict in the season's final month, and a shared playing time situation severely limits all of their fantasy potential in September.

Cubs | Javier Baez batting seventh vs. Reds

Tue, 01 Sep 2015 14:00:59 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez is starting at second base and batting seventh against Cincinnati Reds SP Anthony DeSclafani Tuesday, Sept. 1. 2B Starlin Castro is not in the starting lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Baez ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) posted a .324/.385/.527 slash line with 49 runs, 13 home runs nad 61 RBI over 70 games with Class AAA Iowa this season, and he hit nine home runs during his cup of coffee with the Cubs last year. He owns high-end power for a middle infielder and is worth an immediate add in the majority of seasonal leagues, although don't expect his plus-.300 batting average to accompany him to the majors. FantasyScore players can take a speculative flier on Baez Tuesday, especially given his friendly cap hit. Castro's ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) playing time projects to be on the decline with Baez joining the big club.

Cubs | Javier Baez to be recalled Tuesday

Sun, 30 Aug 2015 11:01:26 -0700

The Chicago Cubs are expected to promote 2B Javier Baez from Class AAA Iowa Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Fantasy Tip: In 69 games for Iowa this season, Baez hit .315 with 13 home runs, 60 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. He is expected to see time at second base, shortstop and third base and deserves to be stashed in NL-only and deep mixed leagues.

Cubs | Javier Baez not ready for call-up

Mon, 24 Aug 2015 10:34:37 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez has had better at-bats in the minor leagues, but manager Joe Maddon said there are no current plans to bring him back up to the majors.

Fantasy Tip: Baez is hitting .304 (75-for-247) with 12 home runs, 55 RBI and 15 stolen bases for Class AAA Iowa. There's a good chance Chicago brings him up next week when rosters expand, and he could see a good amount of playing time at second base. Stashing him now in deep mixed leagues isn't a bad idea.

Cubs | Javier Baez staying at Class AAA

Thu, 06 Aug 2015 15:52:13 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez will stay at Class AAA Iowa for the time being, according to general manager Jed Hoyer Thursday, Aug. 6. Hoyer said the Cubs are comfortable letting him play and continue to get better.

Fantasy Tip: Baez has a .306 batting average, 11 home runs and 10 stolen bases for Iowa this season, and he should find his way to the major leagues once rosters expand.

Padres | SD asking about Javier Baez

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 12:10:51 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez has received a trade inquiry from the San Diego Padres, who are looking for infielders and lefty bats. SP Andrew Cashner could fit the Cubs in a potential deal, and Cashner was previously with Chicago before being traded to the Padres in the deal that included 1B Anthony Rizzo. SP Tyson Ross is also a popular trade target.

Fantasy Tip: Baez has had a rough year after losing out on a roster spot out of spring training with the Cubs. He also has dealt with injuries and a death in the family, but he has rebounded to hit .325/.399/.567 with 10 home runs and 32 RBI in two minor league stops. Baez still has plenty of upside, especially in the power department for a middle infielder. A move to pitcher-friendly Petco Park would likely make him a little less attractive for speculative owners in all leagues.

Cubs | Javier Baez activated from DL

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 18:13:21 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez (finger) has been activated from the disabled list Tuesday, July 28.

Fantasy Tip: Baez will remain at Class AAA Iowa for the time being, but he could find himself headed to a major league roster shortly after Friday's trade deadline. Both Baez and Starlin Castro have been mentioned in trade rumors, and Baez should be back in the majors before long.

Cubs | Javier Baez set to start rehab assignment

Tue, 21 Jul 2015 15:18:49 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez (finger) is expected to start a rehab assignment this week in Arizona. Baez remains a candidate to be traded by the non-waiver trade deadline.

Fantasy Tip: Baez was rumored to be close to a re-call before injuring his finger. A high strikeout rate will be an issue for Baez if he can make his way to a Major League roster this season, but he did have nine home runs in just 229 plate appearances last season, and he'll provide a boost to power-hungry owners.

Cubs | Javier Baez could be up in second half

Tue, 14 Jul 2015 14:50:44 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez (finger) could become the team's starting second baseman once his broken finger is fully healed. Baez would replace 2B Addison Russell at second base or allow him to move over to shortstop.

Fantasy Tip: Although Baez struggled mightily in his first big-league experience in 2014, he was hitting .314 (44-for-158) with eight home runs and 29 RBI for Class AAA Iowa before being injured and was very close to a call-up to help the Cubs in interleague play. Russell end the first half with just four hits in 30 at-bats (.133) in July to drop his average under .230 on the season. Baez will be a popular waiver wire acquisition in all leagues if he returns to the show in the second half.
