The Chicago Cubs have reassigned SS Javier Baez to minor league camp. He will begin the season at Triple-A Iowa.
Fantasy Tip: The Cubs are sticking to their plan of giving Baez more seasoning in the minors, despite his impressive showing in the Cactus League (.310 with five home runs). Manager Rick Renteria would like to see him become more patient at the plate, after he went the entire spring without taking a walk, and he is expected to get the bulk of his playing time at Iowa at shortstop, despite the presence at the big-league level of Starlin Castro. He is projected to reach the majors later this season and should be stashed away on your bench.

Updating a previous report, Chicago Cubs SS Javier Baez (heel) left the game with a right heel contusion Friday, March 21.
Fantasy Tip: It seems like a pretty minor injury and shouldn't keep him out of action for long. Check back for more details.

Chicago Cubs SS Javier Baez (undisclosed) left the game early Friday, March 21, after stepping awkwardly on first base after an infield single. He entered the game with five home runs this spring, and he also leads the team with 13 hits and 31 total bases. The team refuses to say whether Baez will open the year on the big league roster.
Fantasy Tip: Stay tuned for the extent of Baez's injury. From all accounts, it doesn't appear to be too serious, but it could be the difference between Baez starting the year in the minors and breaking camp on the active roster.

Chicago Cubs SS Starlin Castro (hamstring) is close to returning to spring action, and the team is confident that he'll be ready to play on opening day. "Did all his running (Thursday)," manager Rick Renteria said. "Ran all the bases. Today was a day off from the running but (he's) fielding and hitting. We'll see how he feels at the end of the day and go from there." Renteria said he's not even thinking about a backup plan at shortstop. The Cubs have nine spring games remaining, but Castro could see action on the minor league side to get at-bats.
Fantasy Tip: Castro could be in for another slow start in the regular season as he gets his legs back under him. Keep that in mind. Javier Baez doesn't look to be a backup plan at shortstop, however, but the Cubbies could decide he gives them a better option at second or third base to start the season.

Chicago Cubs SS Javier Baez has been impressing everyone in camp this spring with his massive home runs during batting practice, and he has four homers in spring action. The team had planned to have Baez start the year at shortstop at Triple-A Iowa, but his play this spring has them second-guessing that decision. Chicago has tried Baez out at second base, and he's expected to get a look at third base soon. "His mindset's different," bench coach Brandon Hyde said. "I think he realizes how close he is. He is playing with a lot more confidence than he did last spring and with more determination. (He's) a pro now. He understands what it takes."
Fantasy Tip: Baez is still likely to begin in the minors, but don't count anything out because of the way he's playing. The Cubs aren't sold on their third base options, and Starlin Castro (hamstring) is limping into the regular season. Baez has a real chance to make an impact somewhere on the infield in 2014, making him a must-own in all keeper and NL-only leagues.

Chicago Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer confirmed SS Javier Baez will not begin the season in the majors, but he may not be far away. "Cubs fans will see him soon enough but it's not going to be Opening Day," Hoyer said.

Chicago Cubs SS Javier Baez will start at second base Monday, March 17, in the split-squad game. He hasn't played the keystone since high school, and Chicago wants to find ways to get him comfortable at positions besides shortstop.
Fantasy Tip: Baez is expected to start 2014 at Class AAA Iowa, but with his hot spring hitting, he's making a case to be brought up at least immediately after the Super 2 deadline. He's inching closer to a 300-plus-at-bat season, which makes him a justified late-rounds gamble in mixed leagues.

Chicago Cubs SS Starlin Castro (hamstring) will sit out seven to 10 days after injuring his hamstring Sunday, March 2, according to manager Rick Renteria. Renteria said the team is choosing to be cautious with Castro at this time. "It's not too bad like last year," Castro said. "It (hurts) just a little bit. It's early right now. I'll take a couple days and be back again." 2Bs Darwin Barney and Emilio Bonifacio will see some time at shortstop in Castro's absence, and SS Javier Baez is slated to start Monday, March 3.
Fantasy Tip: Castro's price is already down because of his disappointing 2013 campaign. This news won't endear him to any more folks, even if it won't affect his availability for opening day. Take advantage of the value if you have faith in a rebound year for Castro.

Chicago Cubs SS Javier Baez is expected to start with Triple-A Iowa, and he's not putting a timetable on his arrival in the big leagues. The Cubs may test Baez at second and third base this spring, as well as shortstop. He's determined to show the club that he has improved on defense.

Chicago Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said SS Starlin Castro will continue to be the team's starting shortstop even though SS Javier Baez is moving through the minor leagues. "Castro's our shortstop,'' Hoyer said. "We have all the confidence in the world he'll remain our shortstop. I think he'll keep working hard, keep improving. He knows there's still growth there. But [because] he turns 24 in March, he has time on his side. He can certainly play shortstop. Javy can also play shortstop as well." Baez is expected to receive time at second base and third base as well this season.
