The Chicago Cubs believe in SS Javier Baez as a shortstop, but they'll move him around in spring training. He could be the starting second baseman by the end of June.
Fantasy Tip: Baez has big power and will be drafted in a lot of leagues. If he earns regular playing time, he could be a great mid-season addition to your fantasy team.

Chicago Cubs SS Javier Baez will stay at shortstop despite being blocked by SS Starlin Castro at the big league level. Baez was the team's first-round pick in 2011, and scouts are saying that Baez is such a good athlete that he could play any position. "At some point, creating options and creating versatility is a good thing," executive Theo Epstein said. "In Javy's case, he's got a tremendous combination of instincts and athleticism which makes us think he'll be a natural at playing other positions." Baez was the team's minor league player of the year last year after hitting .282 with 37 home runs and 111 RBIs at Single-A Daytona and Double-A Tennessee.

Chicago Cubs SS Javier Baez will skip the Arizona Fall League so that he can rest for next season. "He's emotionally and physically drained after the season," general manager Jed Hoyer said. "We have no problem with (him missing the AFL)." Baez was the team's Minor League Player of the Year after hitting .282 with 37 home runs and 111 RBIs in 130 games with Single-A Daytona and Double-A Tennessee this year.

Chicago Cubs SS Javier Baez and OF Albert Almora are unlikely to come up when rosters expand in September. Manager Dale Sveum doesn't see anyone being called up that isn't already on the 40-man roster. "The (Brian) Bogusevics and Sweeneys, and obviously (Donnie Murphy's) doing a heck of a job," Sveum said of the outlook for current roster players. "And yesterday's topic was getting (Anthony) Rizzo and (Starlin) Castro to where they go into the winter feeling a heck of a lot better than they did two days ago." OF Jorge Soler and 3B Mike Olt are both on the 40-man roster.
Fantasy Tip: Soler and Olt are your best options if you're speculating in NL-only leagues for the final month. They could contribute in deep mixed leagues, too, if they're given everyday playing time in the final month, but that's unlikely.

Chicago Cubs SS Javier Baez and OF Jorge Soler are expected to be sent to minor league camp within the next week. "They are so raw they just have to play so many more baseball games before they're ready for this kind of big league pitching every day," manager Dale Sveum said. "Soler has been impressive to where he doesn't just go up there swinging. He has a pretty good idea. His poise in the outfield, for not playing a lot of games, it's pretty impressive." Baez and Soler are likely to start out at Class A Daytona and Sveum said it was unlikely that either player would reach the majors this year.

Chicago Cubs SS Javier Baez is expected to see more at-bats in spring training games because of the injury to SS Starlin Castro (hamstring).

Chicago Cubs SS Starlin Castro (hamstring) is expected to miss some time this spring after straining his left hamstring Wednesday, Feb. 27. INFs Javier Baez, Edwin Maysonet, Brent Lillibridge and Alberto Gonzalez figure to see time at shortstop in Castro's absence.
Fantasy Tip: There is still plenty of time left in spring training, so Chicago has no reason to rush Castro back. If for some reason this injury becomes a lingering issue, Lillibridge is the likeliest candidate to start the year as the starting shortstop.

Chicago Cubs SS Javier Baez (thumb) had his Arizona Fall League season end after a freak thumb injury, but he was invited to take part in a rookie development camp in January. The team says their plan is to give Baez a full season at one level, although if he continues to make progress, he could be promoted again.

Chicago Cubs SS Javier Baez (thumb) may sit out the rest of the Arizona Fall League after injuring his left thumb over the weekend. He was hitting .211 in 14 games with the Mesa Solar Sox but was leading the leading with 16 RBIs and was tied with four home runs. Baez will be ready to play in spring training, though.
