Cubs | Javier Baez starting at third

Wed, 03 Jun 2015 14:26:52 -0700

Updating a previous report, Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez is starting at third base with Class AAA Iowa Wednesday June 3.

Fantasy Tip: Baez is hitting .325 with seven home runs, six doubles and 26 RBI in his first 32 games with Iowa, and he is currently riding a five-game hitting streak with .351 batting average with four homers over his last 10 games. With Jorge Soler ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) injured, theoretically, Baez could be recalled to Chicago to man the hot corner with Kris Bryant ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) moving to the outfield. Don't rule out a speculative Baez add in deep mixed leagues.

Cubs | Javier Baez call-up coming soon?

Wed, 03 Jun 2015 11:28:11 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez is playing some third base in the minor leagues, and it could suggest that the Cubs are considering bringing him up soon. Baez has been blocked at the major league level at shortstop and second base by SS Starlin Castro and 2B Addison Russell. Baez is hitting .325 with seven home runs, six doubles and 26 RBI in his first 32 games with Class AAA Iowa, and he's riding a five-game hitting streak in which he's hitting .351 with four homers in 10 games.

Fantasy Tip: Baez hit only .169 (36-for-213) with 95 strikeouts in his first taste of the bigs in 2014, and he's struggled with making contact in the minors. He's cut down on his whiffs drastically on the farm this year, though, which could signal that he's ready for the majors this time around. He's worth stashing now in all formats if you have the room.

Cubs | Chicago being patient with Javier Baez

Wed, 27 May 2015 06:35:34 -0700

Chicago Cubs SS Javier Baez is batting .321 through 23 games in May with Class AAA Iowa, but the organization is being patient with the prospect. However, senior vice president of scouting and player development Jason McLeod noted there are daily conversations about Baez joining the Cubs, and that there is potential Baez may audition in the outfield.

Fantasy Tip: Continue to stash Baez is all deep mixed and NL-only formats, as he has huge power potential for a middle infielder. However, there currently isn't an everyday job for him, unless he -- or another young infielder -- moves to the outfield. Expect Baez to force the issue with his bat at some point, and he could even be the big fish in a trade. Continue to check back for updates and monitor the young sluggers progress with Iowa.

Cubs | Javier Baez won't move to OF

Tue, 26 May 2015 14:57:56 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez isn't expected to move to the outfield, according to a team official. However, Baez could still see some playing time out there.

Fantasy Tip: Baez is hitting .311 (28-for-90) with five home runs and 17 RBI at Class AAA Iowa this year after a late start. He could be recalled later this summer or fall, depending on how playing time shakes out with Addison Russell at the major league level. Continue stashing Baez for now in deep mixed and NL-only leagues.

Cubs | Javier Baez progressing in minors

Tue, 19 May 2015 10:12:20 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez has a slash line of .296/.375/.423 with 25% strikeouts in 19 games with Class AAA Iowa this year.

Fantasy Tip: Baez still has plenty of work to do to prove that he deserves another call-up to the major leagues, and the Cubs currently have another top prospect playing the keystone in Addison Russell ($3,200, 6.4% of cap). Baez is still worth stashing in deep mixed, keeper and NL-only leagues, but just know that it might not be until much later this summer or September before he's back in the bigs.

Cubs | Javier Baez to make season debut

Thu, 30 Apr 2015 13:00:13 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez will bat third and play second base for Triple-A Iowa Thursday, April 30. Baez has yet to play this season, because he was on the bereavement list following the death of his 21-year-old sister.

Fantasy Tip: With Addison Russell ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) manning second base for the Cubs, Baez's path back to Chicago might be a long one. He struggled with strikeouts last season, and he didn't have a strong spring training. Baez should only be stashed in keeper/dyantasy and NL-only formats at this point, because he appears blocked at the major league level. There is an outside chance Baez -- or another middle infielder -- could be moved in a deal this summer brightening Baez's 2015 outlook.

Cubs | Javier Baez yet to play

Mon, 20 Apr 2015 16:08:16 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez has yet to play for Triple-A Iowa this year, as he remains on the bereavement list following the death of his 21-year-old sister.

Fantasy Tip: Baez was off to a rough spring training, which led to him starting the year in the minors. An unfortunate set of circumstances landed him on the bereavement list, and it's looking like it could take a while for him to earn a promotion back to the bigs. Addison Russell is taking grounders at second at Iowa, leading us to believe that he'll be up in the majors before Baez in 2015. Baez should only be stashed in NL-only leagues at this point.

Cubs | Javier Baez taking leave of absence

Thu, 09 Apr 2015 15:31:37 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez is taking a leave of absence from Triple-A Iowa after his sister died at the age of 21.

Fantasy Tip: Baez ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) had a rough spring and struggled to make much contact, which earned him a trip to the minors to start 2015. This is just another setback for him, and it doesn't help his goal of making it back to the bigs. In shallow mixed leagues, there's no reason you should be holding him on your roster right now.

Cubs | Javier Baez, Kris Bryant sent down

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 09:53:48 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez was optioned to Triple-A Iowa Monday, March 30, and 3B Kris Bryant and SS Addison Russell were assigned to minor league camp.

Fantasy Tip: Baez, unlike Bryant, really struggled to make consistent contact this spring. It could be a while before the Cubbies bring him back up, as they'll likely want to see him cut down on his swings and misses. Bryant, on the other hand, could be up very soon after the first week or so of the regular season. Both Bryant and Baez should remain owned in all formats. The moves assure that Arismendy Alcantara ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) will see consistent playing time on the infield to start the year, and he'll be a sneaky FantasyScore play in the early going. Alcantara is worth a gamble in the later rounds of deep mixed leagues.

Cubs | Javier Baez will make Cubs roster

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 17:37:19 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez said Tuesday, March 24, he's been told he'll be on the opening day roster. A team official confirmed that Baez was told he'll make the team as the second baseman. Baez is 5-for-39 with 14 strikeouts this spring.

Fantasy Tip: Baez's huge strikeout rate is likely to make him a batting average liability, but he has monster power. His middle infield eligibility could lead drafters to reach on his potential, but it's best not to overdraft him given the risk of him being overwhelmed by big league pitching. His upside does make him worth a late-round pick if he falls, though.
