Colts | Vick Ballard making progress

Sun, 05 Apr 2015 08:53:37 -0700

Indianapolis Colts RB Vick Ballard (Achilles') is doing well in his rehab from a torn Achilles' tendon but there is no timetable for his return to the field, according to head coach Chuck Pagano. Ballard is expected to compete with RB Dan Herron for the No. 2 running back job if he is healthy.

Fantasy Tip: Ballard missed the entire 2014 season because of the injury and may sit out some of the offseason workouts. Ballard and Herron likely will compete for the backup job during training camp and the preseason. Owners should consider the winner of the competition as a later-round draft choice.

Colts | Dan Herron signs tender

Wed, 01 Apr 2015 09:34:25 -0700

Indianapolis Colts exclusive rights free-agent RB Dan Herron has signed his tender offer Wednesday, April 1. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Herron had some good games near the end of this past season but will enter the 2015 season as the backup to Frank Gore. Herron could be a handcuff to Gore in drafts next season or a later-round pick for depth at running back.

Colts | Dan Herron receives tender

Thu, 05 Mar 2015 14:48:00 -0800

Indianapolis Colts RB Dan Herron was tendered as an exclusive rights free agent Thursday, March 5.

Fantasy Tip: Herron held his own last season with Ahmad Bradshaw sidelined and Trent Richardson disappointing. He was an especially nice asset in the passing game and subsequently in point-per-reception scoring leagues. He may not have the same role next season, but keep tabs on Indy's backfield situation as the offseason progresses.

Colts | Dan Herron may not be starter

Tue, 20 Jan 2015 07:05:53 -0800

Indianapolis Colts RB Dan Herron is more of a backup than a starter, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Mike Wells.

Fantasy Tip: Herron had some bright spots, but the team clearly struggled with the running game after Ahmad Bradshaw (leg) went down. The team's RB situation will be one to watch, but Herron might be worth a flyer as a RB4 or RB5 in traditional drafts.

Colts | Dan Herron the key to victory?

Fri, 16 Jan 2015 17:14:36 -0800

Indianapolis Colts RB Dan Herron has had at least eight carries in a game eight times this year, and the Colts are 8-0 in those games.

Fantasy Tip: Herron didn't touch the ball at all in the Colts' loss to the Patriots earlier this year, but the Colts have been leaning on him in the playoffs. He has 236 total yards in two postseason games, and he could be worth a look at FantasyScore at his $6,400 salary (12.8% of cap).

Colts | Dan Herron shows versatility

Sun, 11 Jan 2015 17:45:16 -0800

Indianapolis Colts RB Dan Herron ran 23 times for 63 yards and a score and added eight catches for 32 yards in the team's 24-13 win over the Denver Broncos Sunday, Jan. 11.

Fantasy Tip: Indianapolis' running game continue to struggle with efficiency, but Herron still managed a solid all-around performance and is clearly the lead back for the Colts.

Colts | Trent Richardson's role unclear

Thu, 08 Jan 2015 10:24:49 -0800

Indianapolis Colts RB Trent Richardson's role is unclear leading up to the divisional round game against the Denver Broncos Sunday, Jan. 11, after he was demoted to third on the depth chart behind RBs Dan Herron and Zurlon Tipton in the team's wild-card playoff win. Richardson only played on one offensive snap last weekend. "We're going to evaluate the situation as we go through the week and we'll know more as we go through the week," head coach Chuck Pagano said.

Fantasy Tip: Richardson ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) should be ignored at all costs in the divisional round against the Broncos. We may not even see him in the backfield at all in this one if the Colts have to throw a lot.

Colts | Dan Herron to return to starting role

Tue, 06 Jan 2015 15:51:52 -0800

Indianapolis Colts RB Dan Herron will return to a starting role against the Denver Broncos in the divisional round game Sunday, Jan. 11, after fumbling twice in the team's wild-card playoff win last weekend. Herron was pulled from the game in favor of RB Zurlon Tipton after fumbling the second time, but he returned to the game later.

Fantasy Tip: Herron ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) shouldn't be recommended at FantasyScore this weekend while going against the Broncos, one of the better run-stopping defensive units in the NFL this season.

Colts | Dan Herron finishes game

Tue, 09 Dec 2014 14:34:44 -0800

Indianapolis Colts RB Trent Richardson started in Week 14 against the Cleveland Browns, but RB Dan Herron finished the game, and they used him on the game-winning drive. Herron played 47 of the team's 81 offensive snaps, while Richardson played 32 snaps.

Fantasy Tip: Neither Herron ($5,500) nor Richardson ($4,300) did much on the ground against the Browns. The Houston Texans' run D has been adequate of late, and if Herron and Richardson continue to split reps, neither will be a very attractive FantasyScore option in Week 15.

Colts | Trent Richardson's role won't be reduced

Tue, 02 Dec 2014 15:27:19 -0800

Indianapolis Colts RB Trent Richardson won't have his role reduced by head coach Chuck Pagano after RB Dan Herron outplayed Richardson for the second straight week in Week 13 against the Washington Redskins. Herron has run for 153 yards and a touchdown in the last two games, while Richardson has just 54 yards rushing. "He's a professional, he understands," Pagano said. "None of us can ever get away from working at our craft regardless of the circumstance, regardless of adversity, just keep grinding, just keep working, just keep swinging the ax. If he keeps swinging the ax, the tree will fall. If you put the ax down, the tree is never coming down. Just keep chopping wood and good things will happen."

Fantasy Tip: That said, we all know that Herron ($5,500) is the better fantasy football option, especially in leagues that reward receptions like FantasyScore. Richardson ($4,400) will get a chance to play his old mates in the Cleveland Browns this weekend, but he doesn't inspire confidence in daily leagues, even as a flex option.
