Chicago Cubs RP Jose Veras (oblique) is scheduled to start his rehab assignment with Double-A Tennessee very soon, but it's unknown if he'll return as the team's closer when he's ready. RP Hector Rondon has emerged as a closer candidate with Veras out, and the other options are RPs Pedro Strop and Justin Grimm.
Fantasy Tip: Veras doesn't belong on a mixed league roster right now unless you're using him up in a DL spot. When he's ready to return, he'll probably have to prove that he deserves a shot in the ninth inning again and by then, one of the other relievers on roster may have staked a claim.

The Chicago Cubs could still look to add to their stable of starting pitchers, but they've made it clear they won't go for one of the big remaining free-agent pitchers on the market, including free-agent SP Matt Garza (Rangers). Ps Justin Grimm, Kyle Hendricks and Chris Rusin could be candidates to compete for a rotation spot if nobody else is added. The Cubs also will not re-sign Scott Baker. Free-agent SPs Paul Maholm (Braves) and Jason Hammel (Orioles) have been linked to Chicago.

The Chicago Cubs have liked what they have seen out of P Justin Grimm since he came over from the Texas Rangers. The Cubs put him in the bullpen, where he has prospered, so the team may leave him in relief for 2014.

Texas Rangers SP Colby Lewis (triceps, elbow) has been pulled off his rehab assignment with muscular elbow soreness. Lewis will receive a platelet-rich plasma injection to speed his recovery.
Fantasy Tip: Lewis has been very close to returning several times, but setbacks have ruined his plans. If you've been stashing him in a deep mixed league, continue to do so. The Rangers will give him a rotation spot when he's ready, likely at the expense of either Justin Grimm or Nick Tepesch.

Texas Rangers SP Colby Lewis (triceps) received an anti-inflammatory injection in his right triceps muscle after being diagnosed with inflammation. He has been removed from his rehab assignment and will likely resume throwing this weekend. The team hopes he can resume his rehab assignment next week.
Fantasy Tip: This represents a minor setback for Lewis, and it buys more time for either Justin Grimm or Nick Tepesch in the starting rotation. Lewis is expected to take one of those younger's spot when he's fully healthy. Lewis is close enough to warrant stashing on your mixed league roster.

Texas Rangers SP Matt Harrison (back) will need to undergo back surgery Tuesday, April 23, to fix a herniated disc in his back.
Fantasy Tip: There is no timetable on Harrison's return, but it's realistic that he won't return until after the All-Star break. This is a big blow to a rotation that was already lacking depth. Nick Tepesch and Justin Grimm will remain at the back end, but they are only worth rostering in AL-only leagues. Owners hanging onto Harrison in mixed formats can drop him at this point.

Texas Rangers SP Alexi Ogando will make his scheduled start Thursday, April 18, against the Chicago Cubs despite the rainout Wednesday, April 17. The pitching rotation will not be juggled, and fifth starter SP Justin Grimm will simply have his turn skipped.
