Red Sox | Allen Webster candidate to start Saturday

Tue, 18 Jun 2013 21:05:08 -0700

The Boston Red Sox will need a starter Saturday, June 22, against the Detroit Tigers, and SP Allen Webster appears to be the most likely candidate for the assignment.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz update

Tue, 18 Jun 2013 07:49:56 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz (neck) will throw Tuesday, June 18. The next step would be to throw a side session or go on the disabled list. SPs Rubby De La Rosa or Allen Webster would make a spot start this weekend if Buchholz went on the disabled list.

Red Sox | Rubby De La Rosa, Allen Webster candidates for spot start

Tue, 11 Jun 2013 15:31:42 -0700

Boston Red Sox SPs Rubby De La Rosa and Allen Webster, along with P Alfredo Aceves, are candidates to start one end of a doubleheader scheduled for Tuesday, June 18, against the Tampa Bay Rays.

De La Rosa's pitch counts have moved into the 80s recently, but he has completed five innings only once in his 11 starts for Triple-A Pawtucket. He's allowed only four earned runs in his last eight starts (good for a 1.14 ERA in that span), however.

Fantasy Tip: It sounds like De La Rosa isn't the ideal candidate, especially since Webster has already filled in twice this season -- once quite well, once disastrously -- and Aceves would also be on turn. Clay Buchholz's recent neck issue, along with the recent taxing of Boston's bullpen, has forced them to examine their options. It's feasible to think that P Franklin Morales, who was originally scheduled to start on Wednesday before he was needed for a couple of frames in last night's 14-inning game, is an option for the doubleheader, too.

Red Sox | Felix Doubront makes tweaks

Thu, 16 May 2013 15:13:39 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Felix Doubront worked with pitching coach Juan Nieves to adjust the stride in his delivery in order to generate more velocity and improve the command of his pitches. Doubront has given up 12 runs in nine innings in his last two outings, and he's pitching to keep his spot in the rotation right now. SPs Allen Webster and Franklin Morales (pectoral) could take his spot if he continues to struggle.

Fantasy Tip: Doubront must have a better outing tonight in order for the Red Sox to consider keeping him in the rotation over Morales or Webster. Morales is probably the better bet to take the rotation spot since the team is adamant on keeping him stretched out as a starter. Keep Morales in mind in your AL-only leagues.

Red Sox | Allen Webster sent down

Thu, 09 May 2013 11:16:51 -0700

The Boston Red Sox optioned SP Allen Webster to the minors Wednesday, May 8, and recalled RP Jose De La Torre in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Webster had a nightmare outing against the Seattle Mariners last night, allowing eight earned runs (two homers) while walking three and striking out two in just 1 2/3 frames. That wasn't the outing Boston was looking for in order to convince them to keep him in the rotation. Expect Felix Doubront to re-enter the rotation next week.

Red Sox | Allen Webster could stick around

Tue, 07 May 2013 16:19:32 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Allen Webster could remain with the team for a while depending on how long the bullpen remains depleted and how well he pitches. He tossed six scoreless innings with Triple-A Pawtucket last Friday and struck out nine hitters. SP Felix Doubront, who was moved to the bullpen temporarily, allowed 12 hits and six runs in 3 2/3 innings in his last outing and had decreased velocity. Doubront has walked 13 hitters in 18 1/3 innings in his previous three starts. Webster has struck out 26 hitters in 20 innings with Pawtucket, and scouts are saying that he has the best stuff of any pitcher in camp. If he pitches well Wednesday, May 8, he may be in line for an extended stay in the rotation.

Fantasy Tip: Thanks to Doubront's struggles, Webster may control his own destiny for an extended rotation stay. As a result, deep mixed leaguers should consider putting him on their roster. He warrants ownership in most AL-only leagues, too, for his upside.

Red Sox | Joel Hanrahan to DL

Tue, 07 May 2013 13:23:18 -0700

The Boston Red Sox placed RP Joel Hanrahan (forearm) on the 15-day disabled list with a right forearm strain Tuesday, May 7, and recalled SP Allen Webster from Triple-A Pawtucket in a corresponding move. Webster will make the start Wednesday, May 8, and SP Felix Doubront will move to the bullpen starting Tuesday.

Fantasy Tip: It's probably safe now to drop Hanrahan in mixed leagues since Andrew Bailey (biceps) is expected to return from the DL before him. Hanrahan lost his opportunity to work his way back into the closer's role, and now Junichi Tazawa is closing out games. Webster could be valuable in AL leagues depending on how long he'll stick in the rotation.
