Seattle Mariners SP Danny Hultzen was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma Sunday, March 15. Hultzen missed all of 2014 after undergoing reconstructive left shoulder surgery. However, he came to camp healthy and was showing signs of being the top prospect that Seattle drafted him to be with the second overall pick in 2011. He must now build up arm strength in the minors, and the team's focus is to have him fully ready to go in 2016. Manager Lloyd McClendon said the team will err on the side of cautious with Hultzen this year, especially with his number of innings. Seattle would like him to specifically pitch in warm weather early in the minor league season, meaning he may stay in extended spring training instead. McClendon has an innings limit for the young pitcher, but he won't disclose it.
Fantasy Tip: Hultzen is a promising young pitching prospect for the M's, but with an innings limit this year, he probably won't be of much use in standard mixed leagues. He could be a daily play at FantasyScore whenever he comes up, but his worth is mainly relegated to deep AL-only and dynasty leagues in 2015.

Seattle Mariners SP Danny Hultzen (shoulder) threw 28 pitches of live batting practice Tuesday, March 3, and he said he felt great once again.
Fantasy Tip: All indications are that Hultzen is recovering very nicely from surgery on a torn labrum in his rotator cuff. However, the M's will proceed very cautiously, and Hultzen is expected to start 2015 in the minors. If he proves he's fully healthy, we could see him in Seattle's rotation this year, but it's unknown when that might be. As of now, he's a stash option in AL-only leagues, at best.

Seattle Mariners SP Danny Hultzen (shoulder) appears to be recovered from a torn rotator cuff and labrum, but manager Lloyd McClendon said the team is looking towards 2016 with him at the major league level.
Fantasy Tip: Hultzen could force the team's hand with a strong camp, but he's probably not worth a late flyer in AL-only leagues unless he does so.

Seattle Mariners SP Danny Hultzen (shoulder) underwent surgery to clean up his labrum and fix a partial tear in his rotator cuff Tuesday, Oct. 1.
Fantasy Tip: This could set back Hultzen's progress considerably next season, as shoulder surgeries can often mean lengthy rehab processes. It might not be until the second half of next season before we see the lefty in the big leagues and at full strength.
