St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez recorded a season-high six innings Tuesday, July 8, and the Cards are 5-0 in his five starts this year. Manager Mike Matheny said Martinez's delivery was smooth and that the right-hander's sinker looked on point. He pointed out Martinez looked better because he wasn't trying to reach triple digits on his fastball.
Fantasy Tip: Martinez is finding his groove, but hopefully he'll keep his rotation spot after the trade deadline. Grab him wherever you can. Jake Peavy or whoever else St. Louis may acquire would bump Joe Kelly or Tyler Lyons. Shelby Miller may actually be at risk if they seek outside SP help.

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez will remain in the starting rotation for the foreseeable future.
Fantasy Tip: Martinez is an immediate NL-only add and should be somewhere on your waiver radar in mixed leagues.

St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said SP Michael Wacha (scapula) has a stress reaction in his right shoulder. He's headed to the disabled list, and they'll re-evaluate him. He has been bothered by a shoulder ailment in recent days. A CT scan revealed a stress reaction in his scapula.
Fantasy Tip: Wacha has been pitching like a SP1 all season, so this is a blow to fantasy teams. He's likely to miss at least a month. Carlos Martinez could remain in the rotation until Joe Kelly (hamstring) returns.

St. Louis Cardinals SP Michael Wacha (rest) will have his next start skipped so he can receive extra rest. RP Carlos Martinez will make the spot start for Wacha Sunday, June 22.
Fantasy Tip: This shouldn't be anything to worry about if you own Wacha. Martinez looked good in his spot start this week, but he's probably not worth acquiring for another spot start.

St. Louis Cardinals RP Carlos Martinez will be unavailable for another day after he threw 59 pitches in a spot start Monday, June 16. RP Nick Greenwood, who threw 60 pitches Monday, will be available Wednesday, June 18, but the team would prefer to stay away from him.

St. Louis Cardinals RP Carlos Martinez will get the start in the team's game Monday, June 16.
Fantasy Tip: Martinez will start in place of Adam Wainwright, but Wainwright is only expected to miss one turn in the rotation.

St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny may be quick to pull RP Carlos Martinez earlier when he is struggling. "That's the typical move that you would make," said Matheny. "That's definitely an option."

St. Louis Cardinals RP Trevor Rosenthal is unlikely to be available to pitch Tuesday, May 6, after throwing 39 pitches in back-to-back days. RP Carlos Martinez also may not be available after working three days in a row. RP Kevin Siegrist could appear in the eighth or ninth innings as a result.

The St. Louis Cardinals aren't sure if SP Joe Kelly (hamstring) will need more than two weeks to recover from a slight tear of his hamstring, which means they'll leave RP Carlos Martinez in a relief role for now. Manager Mike Matheny said the team will go with a "minor league guy" for the start against the New York Mets Monday, April 21. SP Tyler Lyons is the main candidate for that start.
Fantasy Tip: Kelly's hammy strain doesn't seem to be too serious. Grab Lyons in an NL-only league if you need some short-term pitching help.

St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said RP Carlos Martinez is a candidate to enter the rotation if SP Joe Kelly's (hamstring) stay on the disabled list is prolonged. Martinez would need some time to be stretched out for the rotation.
Fantasy Tip: Tyler Lyons is likely to be called up to fill in in the short term, but Martinez has much more upside if he's starting. Stay tuned to the prognosis for Kelly, since that'll determine what the team does with Martinez.
