Cardinals | Carlos Martinez to begin throwing

Tue, 19 Jan 2016 08:54:11 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez (shoulder) will begin a throwing program Tuesday, Jan. 19, after rehabbing his right shoulder all offseason. Martinez said his shoulder is at about 90% health, and he doesn't expect any restrictions in spring training.

Fantasy Tip: The Tsunami's Grade 2 shoulder strain was a big scare, but he sounds like he's past it. He'll be an SP3 with upside in fantasy.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez set to being throwing

Mon, 18 Jan 2016 13:05:11 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez (shoulder) said he is "about 90% healthy" Monday, Jan. 18, and he will begin throwing Tuesday, Jan. 19.

Fantasy Tip: After teasing with plus-upside for a couple seasons as a reliever and only making eight starts, Martinez flourished last season with a sterling campaign. He posted a 3.01 ERA, 3.21 FIP, 1.29 WHIP and a 9.2 K/9 with 14 wins in 2015, and as long as there are no setbacks leading into 2016, he should be viewed as a middle-round option with upside in seasonal drafts.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez expected for spring

Tue, 10 Nov 2015 07:39:00 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez (shoulder) is expected to be ready for spring training. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Derrick Goold said on MLB Network's "Hot Stove" Tuesday, Nov. 10, that Martinez is working out five days a week in Jupiter, Fla. The irritation has subsided from his right rotator cuff, and he's on a program that emphasizes flexibility and core strength. Martinez is working on strengthening the muscles around the shoulder as well as his legs. The organization feel it's time for him to rely less on his arm strength and understand that he needs total body strength to get through the season.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez is one of the brightest young arms in baseball, and he'll likely come off the board in the SP3 range in fantasy drafts. Those drafting him will inherit the risk of this shoulder issue.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez to have normal offseason

Thu, 15 Oct 2015 10:31:42 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez (shoulder) will have a normal offseason after suffering an injury late in the year, and he'll spend most of his time in Jupiter, Fla.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez was in the midst of a breakout season before suffering a shoulder injury down the stretch. He went 14-7 with a 3.01 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and an elite 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings. Martinez should be drafted as a No. 2 fantasy starter in 2016.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright activated

Wed, 30 Sep 2015 06:24:38 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright (Achilles') was activated from the 60-day disabled list Wednesday, Sept. 30. SP Carlos Martinez (shoulder) was placed on the 60-day disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Wainwright will pitch out of the bullpen and has no FantasyScore value. His traditional league impact is minimal, too, considering the amount of potential rust he'll have. Martinez's season is over, but he's a definite dynasty league option.

Updating a previous report, St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez (shoulder) has been diagnosed with a shoulder strain and will not pitch again this season, the team announced Saturday, Sept. 26.

Fantasy Tip: Obviously, Martinez ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) can be ignored at FantasyScore for the remainder of the year, but don't forget about his impressive 2015 campaign when it comes time to draft a team next season.

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez allowed three runs on a season-high 10 hits over five innings in a no-decision against the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, Sept. 9, with one walk and eight strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) needed 99 pitches to get through five innings but still managed to keep the Cards in a game that they eventually came back to win. He will make his next start against the Milwaukee Brewers Tuesday, Aug. 15.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez to start Friday

Wed, 02 Sep 2015 14:16:19 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez will make the start Friday, Sept. 4.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($7,900, 15.8% of cap) has been beaten up physically, so he was skipped this week. He'll return to face the Pittsburgh Pirates Friday night, and he'll be a risk/reward option on FantasyScore, but the extra rest should do him well.
