St. Louis Cardinals RP Jason Motte (elbow), who's on a faster than expected track to return from Tommy Johnson surgery, will face hitters in a batting practice scenario on Friday, March 14, for the first time, according to pitching coach Derek Lilliquist. He could be the eighth-inning man sometime in April.
Fantasy Tip: The Cards don't expect to have Motte on opening day, and it's really ambitious to think that he'd be reliable in setup work soon after his return. Sometime after the break is much more rational. Motte's 2014 status has a greater effect on the fantasy value of Carlos Martinez, who's vying for a rotation spot, than he does his own.

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez pitched four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out three, in the Grapefruit League on Wednesday, March 12. He's given up just two runs in 10 spring frames. Pitching coach Derek Lilliquist said whether Martinez joins the rotation or remains a setup man is still to be determined. The decision will be based on not only how Martinez handles himself as a starter but also what makes the Cardinals a better team this year, and there are other factors involved there. Manager Mike Matheny would say only that if Martinez gets people out, he will make the choice very interesting.
Fantasy Tip: There is also some allusion as to how far along Jason Motte (elbow) is. To this point, he's outperformed Joe Kelly. Bottom line: Martinez is worth a flier in mixed leagues and several dollars in NL leagues because of his vast upside. He seems almost certain to make some starts this year, and whatever he can do in his innings should be valuable.

St. Louis Cardinals SPs Joe Kelly and Carlos Martinez are battling for the final spot in the starting rotation. Martinez could begin the season in the rotation at Triple-A Memphis if he doesn't win the job.
Fantasy Tip: The latter scenario is more likely with Martinez starting in Triple-A. He has lights-out stuff, but he had trouble getting through five innings in his spot starts last season. Kelly is 13-9 with a 3.03 ERA in 31 starts and was huge in breaking the team out of a slump last season. He serves as a sneaky NL-Only mid-rotation candidate and a late-round flier in mixed leagues. Martinez's potential and hype will likely make him come off the board before the final few rounds, but his job uncertainty anoints him as a flier in mixed leagues.

St. Louis Cardinals P Carlos Martinez has been optioned to Triple-A Memphis. The move clears a spot for RP Michael Blazek, who has been promoted from Memphis.
Fantasy Tip: Martinez has had mixed results in short major league stretches, and the Cards probably don't care to keep him around for too long if they're not going to use him as more than bullpen depth. He remains a good bet to have an impact in 2014, but St. Louis could once again use one of their prized pitchers in a relief role to indoctrinate him then. Still, Martinez is a superb talent and worth monitoring or stashing.

The St. Louis Cardinals placed SP Jake Westbrook (back) on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain Friday, Aug. 23, and recalled SP Carlos Martinez from Triple-A Memphis in a corresponding move. Martinez will be used in relief and SP Tyler Lyons will move into Westbrook's rotation spot to start Monday, Aug. 26. The team doesn't think the injury will keep Westbrook out for the rest of the season. He had allowed 30 earned runs in 26 innings in his last five starts.
Fantasy Tip: Lyons will become an option for mixed leaguers looking for some pitching help.
