St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez allowed three hits and a walk over eight scoreless innings with four strikeouts in a win Tuesday, April 26, against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez lowered his ERA to 1.93. He has four quality starts in four outings with an average of four strikeouts per start. He has emerged as a must-start in all fantasy leagues thanks to an impressive 0.86 WHIP.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez impressive Wednesday

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 19:14:16 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez (3-0) allowed one run on three hits over seven innings in a victory over the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, April 20, with three walks and five strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez is tied for the MLB lead in victories and has tossed quality starts in each of his outings this season. The 24-year-old right-hander is scheduled to make his next start against the Arizona Diamondbacks Tuesday, April 26, and makes a viable pitching option in all fantasy formats.

Braves | Ender Inciarte out Saturday

Sat, 09 Apr 2016 12:17:30 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Ender Inciarte (leg) is not in the starting lineup against St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez on Saturday, April 9. OF Drew Stubbs will start in center and bat seventh while SS Erick Aybar moves up a spot to replace Inciarte atop the order.

Fantasy Tip: Stubbs was pretty much useless for fantasy purposes last year (.195 batting average and five home runs in 78 games between the Texas Rangers and Colorado Rockies) but is only a season removed from a 15-homer, 20-steal campaign. He's not worth a start against Martinez on Saturday but could be worth stashing in deeper leagues if Inciarte is forced to miss multiple games.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez makes spring debut

Fri, 11 Mar 2016 15:51:33 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez (shoulder) made his first start of spring training Friday, March 11. He struck out two batters through two innings and touched 99 mph on the radar gun while featuring an especially sharp slider.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez has been eased along the spring because of the shoulder injury that ended his 2015 season prematurely. After flashing upside as both a starter and reliever through two seasons, Martinez put it all together in 2015 with 14 wins, a 3.01 ERA, a 1.29 WHP and a 9.2 K/9. He is an excellent target in the middle rounds of drafts because of his near-ace fantasy upside.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez throws sim game

Tue, 08 Mar 2016 10:25:05 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez (shoulder) threw a two-inning simulated game Tuesday, March 8, and his first spring start is expected to come Friday, March 11. Martinez is behind in camp while recovering from a shoulder injury last year, but the Cardinals expect him to be ready for the start of the regular season.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez's breakout in 2015 (14-7, 3.01 ERA, 9.2 K/9) was confirmed by his control gains in a starting role. He also made improvements against left-handers. However, his late-season shoulder injury should have you wary to begin the year. He's ideally a third fantasy starter with more upside.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez could return this week

Sun, 06 Mar 2016 08:46:27 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez (shoulder) is expected to throw one more bullpen session or live batting practice session before being deemed ready to appear in exhibition games, perhaps as soon as this week.

Fantasy Tip: Assuming there are no setbacks, Martinez should be ready in time for Opening Day. He should be viewed as a SP3 in mixed fantasy leagues.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez to face hitters

Thu, 03 Mar 2016 07:35:30 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez (shoulder) threw an aggressive bullpen session Wednesday, March 2, and will face hitters soon. He'll likely make his first spring start in the middle of the month. The Cardinals are open to keeping Martinez at extended spring training when the season starts because they don't need a fifth starter until around April 12, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Derrick Goold said on MLB Network's "Hot Stove."

Fantasy Tip: The Tsunami will be a front-end starter in fantasy if all systems are a go soon after the season begins.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez being held back

Mon, 22 Feb 2016 15:26:12 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez did not throw with the other pitchers Sunday, Feb. 21, after throwing a bullpen session Friday, Feb. 19. Manager Mike Matheny said the Cardinals are being cautious with Martinez and are managing his workload this spring. "He's responded extremely well with everything he's done up to this point," said Matheny. "All positive feedback."

Fantasy Tip: Can Martinez reach the 200-inning mark after flaming out with shoulder woes last year? He has the skills to back his breakout, and better control supports this. He's a fine No. 3 starter to own in fantasy leagues. Keep an eye on his spring workload, but he should be totally fine to start the year on time.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez throwing off mound

Wed, 17 Feb 2016 09:41:00 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez (shoulder) threw 15 pitches off a mound Wednesday, Feb. 17, and he's already thrown off a mound twice this spring. However, he hasn't used any offspeed pitches yet. Martinez is awaiting clearance from coaches to use his other pitches, but the Cardinals are hopeful he'll have a normal spring training.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez is young and has electric stuff, but he'll likely take a step back this year, and some will be scared off by his injury. However, if you can land him as your third fantasy starter, you're looking good.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez throwing bullpen

Mon, 15 Feb 2016 10:33:43 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez (shoulder) threw a light bullpen session Monday, Feb. 15, and manager Mike Matheny said Martinez was throwing "at about 90%." Martinez will be a bit behind the other pitchers in spring training as he recovers from a shoulder injury last year.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez made real gains in his profile in 2015 before his shoulder injury, and he should be ready for Opening Day barring a setback. The shoulder injury should be in the back of your mind, but with full health, Martinez isn't a bad midrange second fantasy starter.
