Cardinals | Carlos Martinez into double digits

Tue, 26 Jul 2016 20:32:30 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez allowed two earned runs, five hits and four walks with three strikeouts over five innings in a win in Game 1 of a doubleheader Tuesday, July 26, against the New York Mets.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez wasn't terribly sharp, but he still has 10 victories and a 2.87 ERA with a 1.16 WHIP to help fantasy owners in all rotisserie formats.

The game between the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets for Monday, July 25, has been postponed due to inclement weather. It'll be made up as part of a doubleheader Tuesday, July 26. Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez had been set to face Mets SP Noah Syndergaard.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure you remove any players that you had in this game from your daily lineups.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez sharp, wins ninth

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 17:34:40 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez upped his record to 9-6 after defeating the San Diego Padres in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday, July 20. The 24-year-old worked seven sharp innings, allowing only two runs on four hits, including a homer. He also racked up five strikeouts and walked one.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez has really settled in nicely as a dependable option in all formats, now owning a 2.83 ERA for the season. He's been extra stingy as of late, having surrendered three runs or fewer in each of his last nine outings. Just keep trotting him out there every time he has an assignment.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez dazzling

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 07:24:25 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez has a 1.49 ERA and 49 strikeouts over 54 1/3 innings though his past eight games. He is starting against the San Diego Padres in Game 1 of the doubleheader Wednesday, July 20.

Fantasy Tip: Outside of a rough May, Martinez has been lights out this season, and he should be viewed as a high-end No. 2 starter for fantasy teams in all settings. He is also an excellent option in daily contests Wednesday because the Padres have the second-lowest OPS (.672) in baseball against right-handed hurlers this season.

Padres | Melvin Upton batting fifth Tuesday

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 14:51:19 -0700

San Diego Padres OF Melvin Upton Jr. will bat fifth Tuesday, July 19, against St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez.

Fantasy Tip: Upton produces numbers both worthy of a middle-lineup hitter and a leadoff guy. He has a .262-16-44 line heading into this game, along with 20 stolen bases. Whether he's leadoff or in the middle, Upton gets the job done and should be in your daily or overall lineup in all leagues.

Padres | Travis Jankowski leads off Tuesday

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 14:44:27 -0700

San Diego Padres OF Travis Jankowski leads off Tuesday, July 19, against St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez.

Fantasy Tip: With Jon Jay sidelined due to a broken right forearm until at least the first week of August, Jankowski has become a low-cost DFS option and a credible replacement for Jay. Jankowski has a .252-1-6 line, so the power isn't there, but he has 16 stolen bases. That makes him a decent threat atop the lineup.

Padres | Alexei Ramirez sits Tuesday

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 14:39:28 -0700

San Diego Padres SS Alexei Ramirez is not in the lineup Tuesday, July 19, against St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez. SS Alexi Amarista will hit eighth against Martinez.

Fantasy Tip: This appears to be a normal off night for Ramirez, so go ahead and scratch him from your DFS or daily rosters. Amarista doesn't see enough action to merit any fantasy value.

Tue, 12 Jul 2016 16:14:15 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia will start against the Miami Marlins Friday, July 15. He will be followed in the rotation by SP Adam Wainwright, SP Michael Wacha, SP Mike Leake and SP Carlos Martinez.

Fantasy Tip: All five pitchers have solid matchups coming out of the All-Star break and should be starting candidates in most mixed leagues and daily fantasy leagues.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez fans 11 in win

Sat, 09 Jul 2016 14:56:52 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez walked four and needed 103 pitches to make it through five innings against the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday, July 9, but matched a career high with 11 strikeouts en route to his first win since June 11.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez, who is the only St. Louis starter with an ERA below 4.00, will finish the first half with an 8-6 mark and 2.85 ERA. The 24-year-old has been outstanding since a rough five-start patch in May and is 3-1 with a 1.49 ERA over his last eight outings. Despite some meager run support and bullpen issues lately, Martinez should still be considered a must-start in fantasy.

Cardinals | STL mulling extension for Carlos Martinez

Fri, 08 Jul 2016 06:37:22 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez is having a contract extension discussed by the front office.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez has been plagued by poor run support and the bullpen behind him, otherwise his 7-6 record would be a lot better. He has a 2.90 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP and 80 K's in 102 1/3 innings. The K-rate is a career low, but he appears to be coming of age as a pitcher. He's a quality SP2 in fantasy.
