Cardinals | Carlos Martinez fans eight

Mon, 25 May 2015 20:57:57 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez struck out eight and allowed five hits over seven scoreless innings but received a no-decision in a 3-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks Monday, May 25.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) has had two really bad outings this year, but he has allowed two runs or less in seven of his nine starts overall. He also has 56 strikeouts in 53 1/3 innings. If the matchup is solid, don't hesitate to to use Martinez at FantasyScore.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez staying in rotation

Mon, 18 May 2015 05:01:36 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez is not being considered for a demotion to the bullpen, according to general manager John Mozeliak.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($5,800, 11.6% of cap) has had his struggles as of late, but there aren't many other options available. Marco Gonzales has struggled at Class AAA and Jaime Garcia may be ready, but that would be for Adam Wainwright's spot. Keep an eye on Martinez and hold off on starting him.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez learns from outing

Tue, 05 May 2015 19:13:05 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez was destroyed for seven runs, nine hits and four walks in just 3 2/3 innings Monday, May 4, against the Chicago Cubs, his worst outing of the season. "He was a little too amped up for the game," C Tony Cruz said Tuesday, May 5. "He didn't get a couple of calls (from home-plate umpire John Hirschbeck) that he thought (he should have). But it happens. He's a young guy. He really wanted to go out there and show what he has."

Fantasy Tip: Manager Mike Matheny liked what he saw in the first four outings, and said this was a relapse of what happened last year. Don't expect Martinez to have an extended slump. At $5,800 (or 11.6% of cap) he is a risky play in FantasyScore, though, until he shows he is on track.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez has wobbly outing

Tue, 05 May 2015 04:37:04 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez walked three of the first four hitters and was charged with a career-worst seven runs in a season-low 3 2/3 innings Monday, May 4, against the Chicago Cubs.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) entered the game with a 3-0 record and 1.73 earned run average this season, so no doubt this start caught many by surprise. Martinez is human, however, so chalk this up as one bad outing. it should not impact your starting him moving forward.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez to start Sunday

Sun, 12 Apr 2015 04:53:56 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez will start Sunday, April 12, against the Cincinnati Reds.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($4,500, 9% of cap) appeared in nine games as a reliever against the Reds last year, and he had two walks and 16 strikeouts. The Reds have hit well as of late, but Martinez may be worth a flier as the Cardinal bats appear to be warming up themselves.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez has innings limit

Fri, 10 Apr 2015 07:22:18 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez will have an innings cap, but it won't be a factor early on, according to manager Mike Matheny.

Fantasy Tip: "Little Pedro" ($4,500, 9.0% of your cap) has electric stuff, but he has yet to show he can get through a major league order three times as a starter. He's a low-end, speculative starter on FantasyScore Sunday in Cincinnati.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez wins fifth spot

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 13:27:54 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez will be the the fifth starter, according to manager Mike Matheny.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) projects to open the season against the Cincinnati Reds Saturday, April 11, in Great American Ball Park. It isn't a favorable pitching environment, and Martinez might be on a short leash for his first start of the season. At best, he would be a mid-priced flier for FantasyScore contests.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez has door wide open

Sat, 28 Mar 2015 14:05:55 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez is likely to be named the No. 5 starter after SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) was scratched from his start Sunday, March 29.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($5,600, 11.2% of your cap) is at a FantasyScore price that yields a lot of upside if he can figure out his issues getting through the order a second and third time.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez with strong start

Fri, 27 Mar 2015 15:17:26 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez allowed a run on five hits and two walks while fanning six in five innings against the Washington Nationals Friday, March 27. Martinez lowered his spring ERA to 3.94.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez is being pushed for the fifth starting spot by Jaime Garcia (shoulder), who is coming off of persistent left shoulder injuries. The Cards could opt to disable Garcia to make him prove his health and anoint Martinez the spot. However, the fact that Garcia is left-handed, something the Cardinals' rotation lacks, could work in his favor. Martinez ($5,600, 11.2% of your cap) is a shaky back-end SP on FantasyScore if he wins the job. He has a ton of strikeout upside, though.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez shaky in latest start

Sun, 15 Mar 2015 14:47:03 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez retired the first six batters in his latest outing but gave up a homer and three doubles to the next 10 batters.

Fantasy Tip: This was not the start Martinez wanted, especially with pitchers like Jaime Garcia and Michael Wacha looking solid. It is hard to predict where Martinez should be drafted, but right now the later rounds look the safest if he wins a starting job.
