Cardinals | Oscar Taveras heating up

Tue, 15 Apr 2014 07:52:43 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Oscar Taveras is hitting .300 at Triple-A Memphis and has seven hits in his last 14 at-bats. He's also hitting .400 with a home run against left-handed pitchers.

Fantasy Tip: There's still a chance he could hit his way into the majors in June. However, that is an optimistic viewpoint after he missed the second half of last season due to an ankle injury and the team's depth.

Cardinals | Oscar Taveras being sent down

Thu, 13 Mar 2014 13:48:41 -0700

The St. Louis Cardinals are optioning OF Oscar Taveras to minor league camp Thursday, March 13.

Fantasy Tip: Perhaps this will temper excitement for those wanting to draft Taveras in mixed universes. He'll need to demonstrate that he's fully past his ankle woes for the Cards to bring him up early in the season. There's still a good chance he spends a large chunk of the season in St. Louis, but don't overspend.

Cardinals | Oscar Taveras probably won't make roster

Tue, 11 Mar 2014 14:58:36 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Oscar Taveras (hamstring) has probably seen his window of opportunity to make the parent club out of spring training close thanks to his tight right hamstring. He was a long shot in the first place. "He needed to come in and have everything go right in order for that to be a possibility," said manager Mike Matheny.

The skipper estimated that Taveras ran at only 50 percent intensity during workouts Monday, March 10. The Cardinals had hoped to see him push it to about 75 percent. "I think he's a little tentative now," Matheny said. "Guys who have had injuries that haven't healed up right, they typically are a little more hesitant to push it." The staff has come away impressed with the top prospect's work ethic, however.

Fantasy Tip: Taveras wasn't going to make the OD roster barring a jaw-dropping showing in the Grapefruit League. He'll return to Triple-A Memphis, where he hasn't spent much time. As long as he remains healthy, he'll probably debut at some point this summer. The better he hits, the sooner that may be, because St. Louis has some depth, barring an injury. Taveras may be worth stashing late in deep mixed leagues.

Cardinals | Oscar Taveras not in lineup

Tue, 11 Mar 2014 06:59:28 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Oscar Taveras (ankle, hamstring) isn't in the lineup Tuesday, March 11. It's the third straight day he has sat after a tight right hamstring was bugging him Saturday, March 8. It could be a week or so before he plays in another spring game.

Fantasy Tip: This further jeopardizes his chances of making the Opening Day roster. He'll have to prove himself in Class AAA first, with an early-summer arrival likely his best-case scenario. Take note, fantasy owners, if you're stashing.

Cardinals | Oscar Taveras to make spring debut

Fri, 07 Mar 2014 06:33:11 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals OF Oscar Taveras (ankle) will start in right field in his spring debut Friday, March 7.

Fantasy Tip: This is notable, because a few days ago, there was no timetable for his debut. He still has a ways to go to get caught up, and we still expect him to start in Triple-A. He could come up in June if a spot opens.

Cardinals | No timetable for Oscar Taveras

Wed, 05 Mar 2014 17:21:17 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals OF Oscar Taveras (ankle) still does not have a timetable to make his spring debut, as the team waits for him to stop favoring his ankle. "He's done a lot of work to get to the point where he is right now. In his mind, he's not favoring it. So it's a tough conversation. We're trying to do what's best for him. And what's best for our club, too, is to have a player who is completely ready to go before he goes out there and starts learning bad habits or makes himself more susceptible to an injury," manager Mike Matheny said.

Fantasy Tip: It would be very surprising if Taveras broke camp with the Cardinals. The Red Birds won't want to rush their top prospect unless he's completely past his ankle injury. He'll have to prove that to the team in the minors before he makes his big league debut, which may not come until much later this season.

Cardinals | Oscar Taveras to play soon?

Tue, 04 Mar 2014 13:01:48 -0800

The St. Louis Cardinals plan to discuss when they can get OF Oscar Taveras (ankle) into his first spring training game. He's been cleared to participate in all activities, but the team isn't ready to let him cut it loose just yet. "I would imagine what's going to happen now over the next few days, is they're going to try and push him to give him more confidence in what he's capable of doing," general manager John Mozeliak said. "I know he desperately wants to get into games." Taveras has been favoring his leg in running drills because he's hesitant to test it at full speed.

Fantasy Tip: The fact that Taveras is hesitant isn't a good sign. He's not expected to break camp with the big league club, and his rise to the majors will depend on his health and performance in the minors. If it weren't for this ankle injury, Taveras would likely be full go at the major league level by now. Predicting him to make a major impact in 2014 is probably unwise. He probably won't start reaching his full potential until 2015.

Tue, 04 Mar 2014 06:28:01 -0800

Cardinals | Oscar Taveras not ready

Fri, 28 Feb 2014 15:20:29 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals OF Oscar Taveras (foot) was still running with hesitation Thursday, Feb. 27, and the team won't clear him for spring action until he's ready to run at 100 percent intensity.

"He's just not quite there. I think he told you guys the other day that he was around 80 percent. But 80 percent isn't going to work right now. I think the medical team seems very confident that it is going to just take him pushing kind of through the last little steps more mentally, more than anything else, and just trusting it. Once we feel confident that he's not holding anything back, then we can use him in the games," manager Mike Matheny said. It's likely he starts the season in the minors now.

St. Louis Cardinals OF Oscar Taveras (ankle) is ramping up his workouts Monday, Feb. 24, to include more intensity and more cuts. The team has no timetable to get him into spring games.

Fantasy Tip: Taveras is unlikely to begin the season in the majors, barring an injury. He could be called up sometime in June and produce if given the necessary playing time.
