Mariners | Leonys Martin posts four-hit game

Sun, 22 May 2016 13:11:56 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Leonys Martin continued his recent tear at the plate Sunday, May 22, against the Cincinnati Reds, singling four times in five at-bats and scoring a run out of the leadoff spot. Martin is 11-for-20 with three homers, four RBI and has scored five runs during his six-game hitting streak.

Fantasy Tip: The four-hit effort was the second of his career and lifted his average 21 points to .252. Despite his poor average for most of the season, Martin probably needs to be universally owned, as he is one of only four players (Mookie Betts, Bryce Harper and Jose Altuve are the others) with at least eight homers and seven steals. The leadoff spot has been a weak spot all season for Seattle, so Martin could do his owners a big favor by locking it down ahead of RBI producers like Robinson Cano and Nelson Cruz.

Mariners | Leonys Martin mashes seventh HR

Thu, 19 May 2016 13:48:12 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Leonys Martin went 2-for-3 with his seventh home run of the season Thursday, May 19, against the Baltimore Orioles. He finished with one run scored, two RBI and also drew a walk.

Fantasy Tip: Wow, where did this power surge suddenly come from? Prior to this year, Martin had 20 career home runs in 1,332 at-bats across five seasons with the Rangers. This year, the 28-year-old is just short of half that amount in only 123 at-bats. Whatever the case, he's a fine player to have in many leagues despite his low batting average, as he also has seven steals in 10 tries.

Mariners | Two outfielders sitting for Seattle

Sun, 15 May 2016 12:03:38 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Seth Smith and OF Leonys Martin are not in the starting lineup against Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Hector Santiago Sunday, May 15. OF Franklin Gutierrez will start in right field and is batting eighth. OF Shawn O'Malley will start in center field and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Gutierrez is hitting .265 with one home run and five RBI against left-handed pitchers in 2016 and may be a starting candidate for desperate owners in daily fantasy leagues. O'Malley was recently called up from the minors and does not have much fantasy value.

Mariners | Leonys Martin, Adam Lind out

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 15:10:25 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Leonys Martin and 1B Adam Lind are not in the starting lineup against Houston Astros left-handed SP Dallas Keuchel Tuesday, April 26. OF Nori Aoki moves to center field, OF Franklin Gutierrez is in left field and batting fifth, and 1B Dae-ho Lee is at first base and is hitting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Keuchel hasn't flashed the Cy Young form he had last year, but he's bound to turn it around eventually. That makes Gutierrez and Lee not all that attractive Tuesday night. If you want one to help you save salary cap space, choose Guti. He hit .317 with eight home runs in 104 at-bats against lefties in 2015.

Mariners | Leonys Martin leaves the yard

Sat, 16 Apr 2016 13:39:29 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Leonys Martin struck out in three of his four at-bats Saturday, April 16, but made the other one count as he sparked a three-run fifth inning with a solo shot in a road win over the New York Yankees.

Fantasy Tip: It has been all-or-nothing this season for Martin, who has struck out 14 times in 35 at-bats and has three multi-hit games along with six hitless efforts among the 11 contests in which he has played. He should remain on the bench or waivers in fantasy until he can show a bit more consistency.

Mariners | Leonys Martin showing plate discipline

Tue, 26 Jan 2016 10:13:15 -0800

Seattle Mariners OF Leonys Martin has 15 walks in 22 games in the Dominican Republic Winter League after he had just 16 walks in 95 games for the Texas Rangers in 2015. Martin was hitting .273 with a .387 on-base percentage prior to the game Tuesday, Jan. 26.

Fantasy Tip: Martin will have to prove himself in spring training in order to earn an everyday outfield role in Seattle. If he does, an improvement in on-base percentage coupled with his speed makes him attractive buy-low option in deep mixed and AL-only leagues.

Mariners | Leonys Martin avoids arbitration

Thu, 14 Jan 2016 15:10:33 -0800

Seattle Mariners OF Leonys Martin avoided arbitration by signing a one-year, $4.15 million deal Thursday, Jan. 14.

Fantasy Tip: Martin had a very disappointing season last year and wound up out of the Texas Rangers' plans. In Seattle he'll have to earn playing time in the outfield, but if he finds regular at-bats, he could be a surprise. Look to him as a late-round flier in AL-only leagues.

Mariners | Seattle outfield rotation still in flux

Tue, 08 Dec 2015 12:13:50 -0800

Seattle Mariners OF Nori Aoki will play every day in the Mariners' outfield, according to general manager Jerry Dipoto. In center field, the Mariners will use a combination of OFs Franklin Gutierrez, Nelson Cruz, Leonys Martin and Seth Smith.

Fantasy Tip: In short, the Mariners are content to let this settle out on the field. It's no surprise Aoki will start and should be drafted in middle AL rounds and middle to late mixed rounds. Of the others Cruz is the most draftable.
